Some stray wording for a rainy day

[edit]

Private figure with no indication of importance

Biographical content about identifiable living persons who have little to no involvement in public life[1] and do not have any credible claim of significance, with the exception of content about Wikimedians in the User and Wikipedia namespaces.[2] If the page includes non-public information, it should be referred to Oversight. This criterion does not apply in mainspace, where the higher standard of A7 should be applied instead.

References

  1. ^ Examples of involvement in public life include, but are not limited to: being nontrivially active on public social or professional networks; publishing works as an author, artist, or academic; holding a public-facing role at a business or educational institution; and being publicly involved in politics.
  2. ^ These pages must still comply with WP:OUTING and, in userspace, WP:UPNOT.

Thanks @Tamzin, that wording works great for me! One tiny nitpick, maybe social network activity is a bit too low of a bar for a "private" figure, given that most people today do use social networks. Maybe that's what you had in mind with "nontrivially" and "public", I'd be happy to hear your thoughts on that (if you find time for it, of course!) Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 18:10, 2 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe "being significantly active on social or professional networks oriented toward a wide audience"? I'm thinking of like, people who are active enough on Twitter or LinkedIn that they clearly consent to being a public figure to some degree. But I don't mean to include someone who makes a Facebook post once a month or something. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe|🤷) 19:52, 2 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That's great wording! Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 20:10, 2 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I also like how this is worded, and I believe it would work well. 2 could be understood to mean that if the page does not comply with UPNOT it should be speedily deleted under this criterion; not sure if that could be improved. —Alalch E. 22:38, 2 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know how to word it, but imho the key difference regarding social networks is the intended audience "friends (of friends)" vs "public" rather than the scale. If you're an aspiring musician/author/streamer/influencer/etc you intentionally want your content to be viewed far and wide, if you're just a prolific sharer of memes and other content you might not mind if your posts get reshared beyond your friend group(s) but being a public figure is not your goal. If the content is self-promotional the subject is (almost certainly?) in the first group. Thryduulf (talk) 15:36, 1 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Thryduulf: Hmm yeah that's a good point. "Wide audience" doesn't solve everything because you can have a novice SoundCloud rapper who's doing everything he can to self-promote, and that's involvement in public life even if he can't crack 100 subscribers. Meanwhile, if I make a "friends of friends" post on Facebook, that's visible to... 10,000 people maybe? 20,000? I don't have a huge number of FB friends, but they're spread over a few continents and some of them do have thousands of friends, so it'd add up pretty quickly. But I don't think it'd be fair to say that's engagement in public life, especially since most of those 10k+ will never see the post. Even harder with something like a subreddit, which can be nominally public but in practice have only ever been viewed by a few dozen people.
Thinking further on this, most of the people we'd want to include in this are already covered under artistic works, as long as we clarify that self-publishing counts. Really the only people who'd only meet the social-media clause are like, lifestyle influencers and cultural commentators. And the latter can be lumped in with artists etc. too. So maybe ... voluntarily disseminating detailed depictions of their personal life to a wide audience (i.e., being an influencer); publishing works (professionally or independently) as an author, artist, academic, or commentator; having a job that involves speaking publicly on behalf of one's employer; and being involved in politics.? There's still a few things that wouldn't cover, but it's not an exhaustive list, so the important thing is just not being overly inclusive. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe|🤷) 16:35, 1 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I understand what you intended with "holding a public-facing role at a business", but the plain reading of that phrase includes such positions as "cashier at a convenience store". —Cryptic 05:54, 1 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, good point. Maybe "having a job that involves speaking publicly on behalf of their employer"? (Btw, it is in fact a rainy day here today! Although that's not exactly evidence of clairvoyance on my part.) -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe|🤷) 06:53, 1 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

AI generated

[edit]

Hi there. I noticed you are a primary contact at AI cleanup, which means you're probably pretty good at spotting AI generated text. Would you have a moment to look at these edits? They said they used AI for grammar, but the edits seem fishy. Thanks! Magnolia677 (talk) 10:29, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Magnolia677, thanks for reporting! Taking a look right now! Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 16:35, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
A lot of the prose strikes me as very typical of AI, like Today, Roseau remains deeply connected to its roots, balancing modern development with efforts to honor its rich past through education and preservation initiatives (which isn't verified by the source at all). Even if it wasn't AI, the promotional tone and the poor quality of sourcing (mostly tourism websites) absolutely justify reverting it.
By the way, if you want more people to have a look at cases like this, you can report them at WP:AINB (the project's noticeboard for issues of AI misuse) in the future! Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 17:26, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate you looking at that. I also didn't know about the noticeboard. Thanks! Magnolia677 (talk) 18:38, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The noticeboard is actually pretty recent, reports used to go on the project's talk page (which led it to become quite bloated) until recently! Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 18:52, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

How should the party and otherparty parameters by used in an infobox? --Donn Fretz (talk) 15:24, 26 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Donn Fretz! party is usually used for the current political party someone is a member of (or, for a deceased person, their most relevant one), and others can be listed in otherparty (which displays as "Other political affiliations"). Sadly, there isn't much documentation for it. Looking in the archives, this discussion clarifies that party should ideally be used for a single party (cf. Winston Churchill's current infobox), although I have seen other articles like Jeremy Corbyn use it with multiple entries. Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 15:05, 27 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Bidyarthi Brothers (13:59, 27 October 2025)

[edit]

Hello,

I recently made an edit to the Kartikeya article(link :- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kartikeya) to make a certain passage more respectful and culturally appropriate.

The previous version read: “Shiva and Parvati were disturbed during sex, causing Shiva to inadvertently release his semen.”

I felt that this phrasing was unnecessarily explicit and did not reflect the reverence due to deities in Hinduism. Therefore, I rephrased it as: “During a moment of divine union between Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, their meditation was interrupted, leading to the release of Lord Shiva’s divine energy (tejas).”

My intention was to preserve factual accuracy while expressing the event in a dignified and culturally sensitive way, consistent with how it is symbolically described in Hindu tradition.

Could you please review this change and let me know whether it aligns with Wikipedia’s guidelines on neutrality, tone, and respect for religious subjects?

Thank you for your time and guidance. --Bidyarthi Brothers (talk) 13:59, 27 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Bidyarthi Brothers! Wikipedia tries to maintain a neutral point of view in religious matters, and, while respecting all religions, we try to avoid euphemisms when discussing them. Ultimately, it all depends on how the sources describe the event: we will consider the primary sources (religious texts) for the most matter-of-fact, unambiguous descriptions, but anything that requires a layer of interpretation should rely on secondary sources for this purpose. We shouldn't rephrase a sentence to talk about "divine energy" to avoid referring to semen. However, if, for example, secondary sources described a reference to divine energy as a metaphor for semen, we should make that clarification, explaining both how the religious texts describe it and how it is interpreted by scholars.
In the specific case you mention, the sources being cited are Lochtefeld, 2002 (pages 655–656), which you can borrow on Internet Archive, and Clothey, 1978 (pages 49–51 and 54–55, some of which are accessible on Google Books). From what I can access of the latter, it presents several variations of the myth which make reference to "seed" (equated to "tejas" on page 54) – I invite you to look into these sources and check for yourself if either wording is accurate to how they describe it!
By the way, while this is unrelated to your question, Wikipedia accounts should be individual. If yours is used by several people, I invite you to create individual accounts for each, and retire this one. Otherwise, if only one person is using it, you can request a rename to clarify the situation! Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 15:27, 27 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
My account is control by we two brothers having same opinions and works jointly as a individual. Bidyarthi Brothers (talk) 19:27, 27 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Even if you have the same opinions and work together, accounts are expected to be individual. I strongly encourage you to create separate accounts for editing purposes, and to not use this one jointly. Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 19:39, 27 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Guide to temporary accounts

[edit]

Hello, Chaotic Enby. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.

Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.

How do temporary accounts work?

Editing from a temporary account
  • When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern: ~2025-12345-67 (a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5).
  • All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
  • A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
  • As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
    • There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
    • There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.

Temporary account IP viewer user right

How to enable IP Reveal

Impact for administrators

  • It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects the autoblock option.
  • It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
  • Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. On Special:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should use Special:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).

Rules about IP information disclosure

  • Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access is generally not allowed (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or ~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
  • Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward 3RR, but not Hey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67)
  • See Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.

Useful tools for patrollers

  • It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via the User Info card, available in Preferences → Appearance → Advanced options → Tick Enable the user info card
    • This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
  • Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
  • Similarly, Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
  • The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.

[edit]
Congratulations!

You are now Wikipedia's newest administrator! From Baton Rouge, allow me to pass you this admin baton 🪄. Tamzin gave it to DanCherek, who passed it along from admin to admin, until Toadspike gave it to me just days ago. With AELECT coming up, hopefully, you will soon be able to pass this on to the next editor.

Among the two hundred and fifty plus editors supporting your candidacy, I'm struck by the number of people who thought you were already an admin. The unblock wizard is very clever, so it's an understandable assumption. Let me thank you for standing for adminship this past week, all you've done before, and in advance for everything you will do.

We type on individual keyboards but build this encyclopedia together. Here's hoping that your adminship will sail as smoothly as your candidacy, Rjjiii (talk) 17:55, 3 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hm, maybe overreacted, since I see now I can edit but not re-upload equivalent Commons images (which didn't use to be the case); and the problems we sometimes see with T20483 are usually for transclusions a couple layers deep, while T:ITN is directly protected. —Cryptic 19:43, 14 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Cascading protection's behavior on transcluded files was changed last month. jlwoodwa (talk) 17:42, 19 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Since you looked at the article

[edit]

I saw you made some edits at Unspecified/nonexistent RCMP detachments. I just wanted your input on it. It is exceedingly strange and it appears to be some pure WP:OR conspiracy theory nonsense. I guess there isn't really a CSD criterion that a would apply, so would AfD be the best option? I wouldn't go for PROD since this user already recreated the page after it was draftified, so I expect they'd just revert it. TornadoLGS (talk) 23:22, 14 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

And it looks like Sumanuil just went for WP:A11 so it's probably moot. TornadoLGS (talk) 23:24, 14 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2025 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2025 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 1 December 2025. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2025 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:55, 18 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject AI Tools

[edit]

How can I help? Shout if you need anything.Polygnotus (talk) 15:06, 19 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

We're still setting it up, but all help is welcome! If you've created scripts that use AI or plan to create any, or have tips for other editors interested in writing some, you can share them! Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 17:27, 19 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I like that your first priority is to add beauty where that is often sorely lacking on MediaWiki. Make it a space you'd want to be in instead of a drab gray collection of rectangles. T360489 may contain some stuff worth adding, or people worth inviting. Polygnotus (talk) 20:41, 19 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm subscribed to it and have been following it from a distance, as the project gets organized it could be great to drop a notice there! Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 23:08, 19 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
