Question on CSS

[edit]

Hi, Prime Hunter! First, I just wanted to say again thank you so much for the help and advice on WP:VPT.

On both my user page and talk page, I have added a background to cover the entire pages that I will be changing seasonally—spring, summer, fall, winter—at least for now, using the following code: <div style="background: #96C8FA; border: 5px solid #000000; padding: 1%;">. For winter, for example, I personally associate it with a dark blue; however, I can't use dark blue because then the links and such can't be seen, at least not very well, as they don't contrast well.

For some brief background information, I used to be an administrator on a forum that no longer exists, which ran on vBulletin and later XenForo, where I was the primary stylist. I am very familiar with CSS and remember that for areas that aren't touched by the style properties in the admin control panel, I could use CSS and add that to either the respective template itself or the miscellaneous CSS template by inspecting the element and finding the class I need. For example, .body {color: red;} affects the text color while .body a {color: yellow;} affects the link color, which usually also applies to something like .body a:hover. I know Wikipedia works a little differently, at least to editors like me, since I obviously don't have access to the styling page of Wikipedia.

Anyway, I have tried adding color: #FF0000; as a test to the aforementioned code above in the second paragraph; however, it doesn't affect the text color of the section headings, bullets, links, or signatures, like the timestamps of the signatures, as seen here and here. I'm sure there may be other areas it doesn't affect, I'm just not using them at all. Is there a way to easily change that and I just need to use another style class or is it another one of those things like the user infobox that has a fixed setting that can't be changed just for a single user? Thanks in advance! Amaury22:09, 9 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You can do more with mw:Help:TemplateStyles. Make a page like User:Amaury/styles.css with CSS rules for your user page and add it to User:Amaury with <templatestyles src="User:Amaury/styles.css" />. You may have to create the CSS page as a subpage in template space and move it to userspace to get the required sanitized CSS content model without getting an interface administrator (I'm only a normal administrator) to change the model. Note that the page should be readable in Wikipedia:Dark mode. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:52, 9 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't have a chance to follow up yesterday, as I had to get ready for work. So, to clarify, I would create Template:Amaury/styles.css and then immediately move that to my userspace so it's sanitized? Amaury19:54, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Amaury: Yes, that should work. If it fails then you can use {{Edit interface-protected}}. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:01, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for the help. I've done some tests using User:Amaury/styles.css and User:Amaury, and everything seems to be working. Amaury20:14, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ping thing

[edit]

Did my ping here [1] work? Not sure because of the paragraphs. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:43, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Gråbergs Gråa Sång: Thanks. It worked. It can fail if you edit existing paragraphs but if you add multiple paragraphs then the mention and signature don't have to be in the same paragraph. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:51, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, good to know. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:19, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hey,

Wanted to say thanks for helping me out with the mistake I made. I'll avoid making the same mistake in the future.

Thanks for Source links, it is very useful. Currently, when window.location.search is empty, it logs an empty string to console, can that be fixed? Polygnotus (talk) 19:02, 1 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Polygnotus: I have removed the console logging completely.[2] PrimeHunter (talk) 20:29, 1 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

How I imagine you view Wikipedia.

For a long time I have seen you as the Neo of Wikipedia, and I assume that some time ago you took the red pill and while the rest of us see wikicode and rendered webpages you see a series of ones and zeros. I bet you even wear cool sunglasses when editing, in spite of dark mode.

This is a long way of saying thank you for your tireless technical help on the Help desk and Village pump tech. I noticed you at it again today. Best wishes. Commander Keane (talk) 12:15, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much. They are slightly different, but since there is no link between the Persian and English templates, I will temporarily link to it. By the way, I apologize for taking up your time. I will try to only bother you when necessary. Arbabi second (talk) 10:56, 1 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Struggling user

[edit]

@PrimeHunter I wonder if you could help a little here? MaxWyss is still struggling with his attempts to add some material to the Myanmar earthquake article. I've just spent something like an hour and a half battling a slow connection on my phone to track down what happened, and don't really want to risk his efforts being wasted a third time. Neither do I particularly want to get into conflict with the editor who made the second revert. Musiconeologist • talk • contribs 21:43, 2 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Request to remove redundant page

[edit]

I created this page Template:Poetry/styles.css with the aim of creating a Persian poetry template on the English Wiki. But it was not successful. However, another method was successful. The mentioned page is now redundant. Can you delete it to put my mind at ease? Arbabi second (talk) 13:01, 3 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I see that you have contributed to this article. The article about this BBC Radio series is facing a deletion request. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Book of the Week. Any comments?

Hi there. Not sure if you and I have ever interacted, although I have seen you around. Thank you for all you do on the project. Just wanted to let you know that I didn't evaluate the article for notability, but rather, I redirected it, because 80% of it is uncited, and doesn't pass WP:VERIFY. The only thing which has a source is the squad. Anyway, based on your comments I'll mark it as "sources exist", and remove the unverifiable material. Onel5969 TT me 21:09, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

template editing assistance

[edit]

You were extremely helpful, editing {{uw-brd}}, following the discussion at template talk:uw-brd#first variable?! May I further infringe upon your charity for help at template talk:talk quote inline#quotation marks and apostrophes. Another editor has weighed in, but said, citation templates make this happen with Lua magic, which is above my pay grade., and I'm hoping you have just such the needed skillset. Just because

[edit]

Two clips you might like:[3][4]. In my Swedish ears, anteater guy sounds plausibly Danish. In another QI episode, a panelist comments that Swedes are quite nice people, to which Toksvig replies "That's because they're drunk all the time... Sorry, it's a Swedish/Danish thing." Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:30, 6 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Gråbergs Gråa Sång: Funny! He sounds good but not quite native and he missed the ending "en" on anteater corresponding to "the" in English. Many Swedes come to Helsingör and Köpenhamn to buy alcohol and have a certain reputation in those areas. I live 10 km from Helsingör and went to high school there. Toksvig is from Copenhagen. You might like [5] from Brooklyn Nine-Nine. I saw the episode and found it hilarious. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:38, 6 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That was great! There's that Swedish/Danish thing again, we have a lot of common history, as in plenty of wars. Carl von Linné lär ha sagt. "Det finns Svenska och det finns Danska. Skånskan består av dräggen från båda språken."

Sort Roman

[edit]

Well, we're up to 38 uses of the template now. Fixing the earthquake lists was really quick once I got that I only needed to use it for the IX values. It was interesting to discover the many workarounds that other editors have used to get round the problem, such as template:Ntsh, but your solution is by far the simplest, thanks again!

Regarding the whole Danish Swedish thing, I visited Göteborg last month and took a trip out to the Älvsborg fortress - I had no idea about the long-lasting enmity between the countries, and I'd certainly never heard of the Stockholm Bloodbath. Having worked in Norway and with friends and family in Sweden, I'm more used to hearing about that particular rivalry. Mikenorton (talk) 11:06, 12 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Mikenorton: Thanks! It was nice of the Romans to make it mostly alphabetical for small numbers. It may prevent it from reaching my other sort template {{Sort grade}} with 101 articles. List of wars between Denmark and Sweden is pretty long but we stopped in 1814. We have been friendly for a long time and just take some jabs. I imagine it's similar to the UK and France. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:30, 12 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
