Hold up, why should one be referred to by their last name? Any convention or WP rule as to this? If the subject wants to be called by their first name, does their last name still have to be used instead? Natsuikomin (talk) 08:52, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrolled

[edit]

Hi there. I'm a New Page Reviewer - one of the people that marks your new articles as 'patrolled' when they come through the system. The article on Doris Blackwell was written and completed to a high standard; I note you've created more than 120 articles on Wikipedia (details here). Please so consider applying for the Autopatrolled status for your account. This means that you are a trusted article creator and your subsequent new articles won't go through the review process; this makes life easier for you and for the New Page Reviewers (as there are fewer in our backlog). It's a simple process and the form to do so is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_permissions/Autopatrolled. Thanks for your contributions. Hello Narutolovehinata5 and apologies for the delay; I have changed the first sentence and added a citation about crocodiles in the area; it is generally accepted so I didn't contain a reference earlier (although I do know that everything needs to be cited!) and I am not sure about the quality of the reference I did add. Also as far as copy editing I am sorry but I cannot see what needs to be changed but do know my work often needs some copy editing help so if someone could make the required changes that would be much appreciated.Aliceinthealice (talk) 08:50, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Probably incorrect information RE The Channon Village, NSW

[edit]

Hi Alice, I note in your recent edit to The Channon, New South Wales, you cite 2 theories regarding the origin of the name, the second being that the name was brought with them by the Currie family, who were originally from Scotland (source being the relevant entry by the NSW Geographical Names Board). Actually I think that the Geographical Names Board is incorrect here (no fault of yours) but has jumbled information about the Currie family, who were indeed from Scotland and brought with them the name "Dunoon" (an adjacent village), who supposedly also suggested the name "Channon", but in that case not from Scotland but based on the local aboriginal word as separately stated (source for this is Pauline Barratt's book published in 1999, which appears to have been garbled in its transposition to the NSW Geographical Names Board website). I have given feedback to this effect to the NSW Geographical Names Board via their online comments form so, if they change the entry there, one of us can then change the article to remove the second suggested derivation, which seems to be an error... Otherwise thanks for your efforts! Best wishes, Tony Rees, northern NSW (not far from The Channon village in fact). Tony 1212 (talk) 19:51, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Tony 1212 thank you so much - I have removed the alternate theory and, yes, the Dunoon one seems much more likely! I am also living in the Northern Rivers and, as a recent arrival, am having fun exploring! Thanks again. Cheers Aliceinthealice (talk) 22:52, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your submission at Articles for creation: Jill L. McNitt-Gray (December 1)

[edit]
Your recent article submission to Articles for Creation has been reviewed. Unfortunately, it has not been accepted at this time. The reason left by Ca was:
This submission appears to read more like an advertisement than an entry in an encyclopedia. Encyclopedia articles need to be written from a neutral point of view, and should refer to a range of independent, reliable, published sources, not just to materials produced by the creator of the subject being discussed. This is important so that the article can meet Wikipedia's verifiability policy and the notability of the subject can be established. If you still feel that this subject is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, please rewrite your submission to comply with these policies.
The comment the reviewer left was:
I have removed the offending sentences identified by Jaireeodell.
Please check the submission for any additional comments left by the reviewer. You are encouraged to edit the submission to address the issues raised and resubmit after they have been resolved.

Your edit to Sydney

[edit]

Hello there

I reverted your edit to Sydney because this issue has previously been discussed extensively on the Talk page and the consensus is not to add an Indigenous name for Sydney. In summary the reason for this are:

1) The land on which the Sydney metropolitan region now stands covers the traditional lands of 26 clans each of which had a different name for their territory.

2) "Warrane" was the word one group used for Sydney Cove, not Sydney as a whole.

3) "Gadigal" is not a place name, it is the name of a people: the Gadigal people. Their territory was called Gadi (Gadigal means literally "man from Gadi". Gadi (the territory) only covers a small part of the area now covered by Sydney.

4) There are also ongoing political disputes between various Aboriginal groups regarding traditional lands and languages.

Happy to discuss on the Talk page of the article Aemilius Adolphin (talk) 02:41, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

July 2025

[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm Patar knight. I noticed that you have been adding short descriptions to articles. However, the short descriptions you added are too long to be effective, such as at William McKinnon (Australian police officer). The guideline is that short descriptions should ideally be under 40 characters long, and no longer than needed. For more information, see the short description guidelines. If you have any questions, please let me know. Thank you. -- Patar knight - chat/contributions 04:47, 17 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Patar knight , thank you for your comment and please feel free to change any short descriptions I add (although I will keep in mind the 40 character limit!) and update the one on McKinnon. This is something I generally try to only do when creating a page.
Cheers, @Aliceinthealice Aliceinthealice (talk) 06:12, 17 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I went through all your article creations. The main issue seemed to be including dates in accordance with WP:SDDATES, since they were sometimes missing or placed at the start. The only other issue was not indicating a country in the SD and/or the lead, which is usually one of the most helpful items in a short description. I understand that for some Indigenous folks it might be touchy, but it does help readers. Where possible I tried to include it in a geographic sense, and you should feel free to adjust as needed.
Generally while 40 is ideal since that's when things get truncated in some contexts, usually up to 50 is perfectly fine and 60 acceptable as long as the key information is in the first 40. -- Patar knight - chat/contributions 08:45, 19 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ben Murray

[edit]

Hi. I noticed you removed the redirect that was at Ben Murray to create a new article, and I was wondering if you created a new redirect or moved it at all? Obviously anything that linked to that redirect is now going to land at the wrong Ben Murray, so I just wanted to check before I accidentally create a second page. - JuneGloom07 Talk 21:38, 12 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @JuneGloom07 apologies I hope I didn't do the wrong thing! The existing redirect was to a short term character on Home and Away which linked to a number of incorrect names including a football payer and a TV show producer. I did decide to use the initial redirect as it was to such a brief mention and two that definitely appeared to be in error... Aliceinthealice (talk) 22:01, 12 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Yoolya

[edit]

On 10 September 2025, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Yoolya, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Yoolya, a member of the Nyigina who was taken from his people as a child, was in later life committed to both Aboriginal and Catholic beliefs? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Yoolya. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Yoolya), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hi Aliceinthealice. Thank you for your work on William Kekwick. Another editor, Klbrain, has reviewed it as part of new pages patrol and left the following comment:

Thanks for creating this interesting biography for a 19th century explorer. As 'second in command', I had wondered about a merge to John McDouall Stuart, but there's probably sufficient that is distinct to warrant separate coverage.
