Question from NoBsOk (18:47, 1 September 2025)

[edit]

Hello, I need help editing a page, I was editing https://legacyplus.miraheze.org/wiki/Main_Page for the past couple hours, since I saw it was many days till it was going to be considered for deletion.

And I’ve been editing a ton, and then suddenly Wikipedia logs me out and says my account doesn’t exist, so I re creat my account and verify it again, and now it’s telling me in order to keep editing the pages, I have to enter a confirmation code into the website and idk what to do. --NoBsOk (talk) 18:47, 1 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

A quick note to add that as the page creator, it is not best practice to unilaterally remove tags identifying potential problems without first discussing with the editor who placed them -- as you did on Samuel Boakye Pobee with @Onel5969 who placed a notability tag and @Kahtar who placed a tag that it was an orphan - which indeed it was and is. I don't see evidence that you discussed these editors' concerns with them before you removed the tags. Thanks for understanding. Dclemens1971 (talk) 20:25, 7 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Dclemens1971, for your note. I want to be clear on a couple of points so I handle things correctly in the future.
First, regarding the removal of maintenance tags: I used edit summaries (per Help:Edit summary) when I made those edits. Are edit summaries not considered sufficient explanation in such cases (or I didn't give sufficient explanation), or is it always expected that discussion take place on a talk page before removing a tag?
Second, on the orphan tag: you wrote “which indeed it was and is”. Could you kindly clarify what exactly is meant here? From WP:ORPHAN, it seems that even a single appropriate incoming link is enough to resolve the orphan status. Is the concern that there were no links at all at the time, or that the number/quality of links added was still insufficient?
Thank you once again for the feedback and I’d value your clarification on these points. Br -- Robertjamal12 ~🔔 04:48, 8 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sure thing. Edit summaries are great and I'm glad you're using them. But when a user expresses concern about notability or another issue, it's not enough to just explain that you are removing a tag; you should offer other editors the courtesy of explaining why. That might be posting a talk page note describing which sources you think qualify the subject according to the general notability guideline, explaining if there is a subject-specific notability guideline you think applies, or just an edit summary stating you believe the tagging was bad-faith drive-by tagging. Whatever happens to be the case, it gives the tagging editor and others context for why you took that action. Without that context, a page creator reverting a maintenance template can look like wanting to avoid scrutiny or ownership behavior.
As for orphan status, that means no pages in article space link back to the article. That makes it hard for other users to find the article. (You can view these pages in the "What Links Here" button on the left hand menu.) Generally, any page with a notable topic should have other pages linking to it in mainspace. Tagging a page as an orphan adds it to lists that gnoming editors can review to de-orphan them, so removing the tag is not helpful in ensuring the page develops. Does this help? Dclemens1971 (talk) 13:20, 8 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Dclemens1971 Thanks for the detailed response. I appreciate the clarification regarding the orphan tag. I’ll look into it more closely and compare with what policy says, and will come back if any further clarification is needed.
On the other point, I’d be happy to read if there’s a specific policy or guideline that says when a user expresses concern about notability or another issue, it’s not enough to just explain that you are removing a tag; you should offer other editors the courtesy of explaining why. You also mentioned: "Without that context, a page creator reverting a maintenance template can look like wanting to avoid scrutiny or ownership behavior.", does this still apply if an edit summary was given when removing the tag?
And also here: "…or just an edit summary stating you believe the tagging was bad-faith drive-by tagging.". I don’t think most tagging or template placements are bad faith; often they seem to happen due to oversight with tools, volunteer burnout, or other quick judgments rather than intentional bad faith. -- Br Robertjamal12 ~🔔 13:52, 8 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know of a specific guideline but WP:COMMUNICATE expresses the spirit. That's why I framed my comment as a best practice. I don't think you violated policy, but since you're a longstanding editor I thought I'd share this as advice for effective editing. Thanks! Dclemens1971 (talk) 14:06, 8 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Dayant101 (08:22, 10 September 2025)

[edit]

Hi there! Hope you don't mind me reaching out. I've made some edits to this page, as the organisation has recently rebranded/changed name. I don't yet have user rights to update the logo or the page title, so I can't figure out a way to change the page title to Cambridge OCR and update the logo from the existing blue old one to the new Cambridge OCR one. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxford,_Cambridge_and_RSA_Examinations --Dayant101 (talk) 08:22, 10 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from EspressoMachine77 (13:40, 20 September 2025)

[edit]

Hello Robert! It's good to meet you, and thank you for signing up as my mentor. I've been having fun learning about contributing to Wikipedia. I recently came across an article that I think would be served by extensive additions, and I'm wondering how I should do that.

The article is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subtypes_of_HIV#HIV-2.

Currently, HIV-2 is only a sub-section, but I wonder if it could have its own article. I study medical anthropology sometimes, and I am aware of a much broader story about HIV-2 than is currently portrayed. --EspressoMachine77 (talk) 13:40, 20 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
