About the common names, do I have permission to add them later?

I do require some assistance though, as one user (Bhagya Mani) constantly undoes my edits, and the user was even called out by another user in a talk page. Firekong1 (talk) 19:51, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Firekong1 Any answer must depend entirely upon the quality of your source(s). I’m away on holiday at the moment; did I not answer your question earlier at User talk:Nick Moyes#Hello?
Try and engage with other editors if they revert you and see if you can justify your proposed edit to them. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 20:16, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from GlpWikiEdits (22:12, 10 January 2025)

[edit]

Hi - I'm looking to create a page for an organisation. Is there guidance on the minimum standards for when a page should be created? --GlpWikiEdits (talk) 22:12, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, @GlpWikiEdits. What is the company, and are you connected with it in any way? All businesses must be deemed ‘Notable’ by Wikipedia’s definition. You can read the notability criteria for companies HERE. In essence, you will need to be able to base any new article on at least THREE, detailed, independent sources. This excludes insider business newsletters, the company's own PR material and website. Proper mainstream media articles would be needed.
We are not here to help people promote their business, so meeting notability criteria is absolutely essential, or you will be wasting your time (and ours) if you try.
If you are connected to the business or its owner in any way, you should declare your ‘conflict of interest’ by following instructions at WP:COI. And if you are accepting payment to do so (or are paid as an employee), you are obliged to declare who is paying you, per our rules at WP:PAID. Undeclared paid editors are liable to be permanently blocked from editing.
Finally, it is not easy to create an encyclopaedia article here with no previous editing experience. So we advise new editors like you to spend a few weeks or months learning how to edit and improve existing articles first. You also have a 'Homepage' tab which allows you to try out different levels of simple improvement tasks to get the feel of how Wikipedia works. I will leave a welcome message on your talk page with links to our tutorial pages on editing. You will need to work through them to understand the basics of editing, using either (or both) of our two editing tools available to users.
Further advice on creating your first article can be found HERE. Let me know if this helps. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 22:29, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You're right!

[edit]

Bizarrely, when I listed them I found more than three agencies named iconic musicians on the first SERP from Google. Now none! Obviously(!) I thought it was obvious, now I feel slightly foolish. Question from RNK5716 (20:03, 15 January 2025)

[edit]

Hello mentor !! I want to ask you that how to make new articles on Wikipedia ? --RNK5716 (talk) 20:03, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there RNK5716, and welcome to Wikipedia.
Could I ask what topic you were thinking we needed to have here? What would it be about?
I don't want to sound negative, but you must be advised that creating an article from scratch is seen as the hardest of all tasks anyone can perform here on this encyclopaedia - and that's especially so for a new user, I'm afraid. We always recommend spending a few weeks or months learning the basics of Wikipedia before embarking on that particular challenge.
Any new article has to be about a 'notable' topic' - not everything is deemed Notable by Wikipedia. So, we have special criteria and help to determine whether a person, a business or an artist meets those criteria. In essence, whatever it is, it has to have been written about in depth by at least three independent mainstream sources that are regarded as 'reliable'. We ignore self-published blogs, press releases, their own website and also social media. See WP:NBIO, WP:BUSINESS and WP:NARTIST respectively for details of these criteria.
However, if you really want to try immediately, you should read THIS PAGE about creating your first article. You will find a 'wizard' there to help you make a 'Draft article', which you can work on and submit once you are confident it is ready for the main part of the encyclopaedia. It will be reviewed for you once you submit it, and you will get helpful feedback if it isn't yet good enough. That gives you more time to work on it and then to resubmit it. But before you start, you should work through the pages at Learn More About Editing link in the welcome to learn how to use our editing tools.
I hope this helps. Let me know if you need any more assistance. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 21:33, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question on Adoption

[edit]

Hello! I was looking through the potential adopting Wikipedians and I really liked everything you said in your introduction there. I may not be the right fit, and if so, cheers, but I had to reach out nonetheless.

I'm an engineer by education and profession, based in the US. I'm passionate about science topics in general, especially physics (with a preference for particle physics) and chemistry. I love history, politics, law and government and similar related topics. I'm also deeply nerdy and obsessed with J.R.R. Tolkien's Legendarium.

I would be so grateful for any help. Thank you! Amocito0113 (talk) 18:56, 31 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Amocito0113 My apologies for the delayed reply; I have been rather busy in real life, having just taken on a new allotment! Thank you for introducing yourself, too. Normally I only tend to support editors who have already shown a reasonable commitment to contributing her, because the investment in time and effort to support someone who leaves after a few weeks is not justifiable. However, we do need more female editors on Wikipedia, so it would be great to help you to stick around and contribute here, as it can be tricky to get started and stay motivated.
So far, I see you've not actually edited any 'mainspace' articles, so I would encourage you straight away to start doing that, perhaps by finding articles about topics you're interested in and seeing if any small improvements can be made, perhaps in grammar or punctuation. I see you're active on another wiki, so perhaps you already know the basics of editing and citing sources? Be aware that we don't want people to go through articles changing the odd word from one acceptable spelling to another, such as colour->color (or vice versa). See WP:ENGVAR for more details on that rule.
Anyway, I've left you a welcome message on your talk page containing valuable links which I'd encourage you to read through. Everything here has to be based upon properly published existing sources - nothing that you simply 'happen to know'.
You have a choice of two editing tools to use - and it's dead easy to switch back and forth between them whilst editing. For committed Wikipedians, I encourage them to use WP:Source Editor as it is more powerful, although Visual Editor is more WYSIWYG, and tends to be preferred by newer editors.
Be aware that you do have a 'Homepage' tab which allows you to see some 'suggested tasks' to help you get started. You are able to choose topic categories and choose the level of complexity for doing things like adding a source, or linking to other articles.
We have tons and tons of help and guidelines - too many, it often seems! So, don't be discouraged if you accidentally make a mistake and get your edit reverted. If the reason left for that revert is unclear, it's quite OK to go to the other person's talk page and politely ask them to explain what you did wrong. We often learn most effectively from our mistakes, as we know new editors do make many errors in good faith, which is quite ok.
So, whilst not formally 'adopting' you at this point in time, do feel free to ask questions, linking to any edits you've made and seeking input from me. But bear in mind there may be a few days delay at times. For any urgent problem where you'd like feedback within the hour, feel free to also make use of our Teahouse, where you can get help on single issues very quickly. But avoid asking multiple, unrelated questions that need complex answers. Best to do that over a long time period on my talk page, if you wish.
Let me know how you get on. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 10:32, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Noam Elyada on Wikipedia:List of infoboxes (20:16, 16 February 2025)

[edit]

Hello Nick,I want to add an infobox user but I need help how to make it --Noam Elyada (talk) 20:16, 16 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Noam Elyada. I'm confused. Are you asking me how to make an Infobox to go in a Wikipedia article, or a Userbox? I suspect you mean the latter, i.e. to go on your own userpage. If so, see guidance at Wikipedia:Userboxes. If the former, do please explain why you need to make one that no existing Infobox currently addresses.
I recommend you use WP:Source Editor, as this will let you see how others have both made their own userboxes (or Infoboxes), as well as how they've added it (via a process known as WP:TRANSCLUSION) to the appropriate listing page. Should you need it, instructions are to be found on making a new Infobox for an articles at Help:Infobox. I hope this helps you one way or another! Question from Unabo Gobololo on Flo (group) (09:50, 20 February 2025)

[edit]

Hello , How do I add pictures? --Unabo Gobololo (talk) 09:50, 20 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Unabo Gobololo, and welcome to Wikipedia. We have a tutorial on adding pictures, which you can read HERE.
But it's essential to point out that you cannot simply lift images from the internet that other people have taken, or upload anything to which you do not own the copyright of (i.e. took yourself). If you take a picture of something or someone, you first upload it to Wikimedia Commons, and from there you insert it into a Wikipedia page.
If you'd like to tell me what picture and what page you want to add it to, I might be able to guide you a little better. But I hope this helps for now. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 23:06, 20 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for replying Nick ! I would love to add a picture into a page about a girl group that I edited. I will make sure I go through the tutorial and if you can help me please do Unabo Gobololo (talk) 12:32, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Unabo Gobololo Sure thing. Just ask away. But I must reiterate that, unless you actually took the photos yourself (or they are explicitly released on the group's webpage under a Creative Commons Commercial Licence - which is incredibly unlikely!) you cannot use pictures taken from social media. Facebook, websites etc. You can find all the properly licenced images on Commons at THIS PAGE. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 09:55, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Aria-Cali (05:49, 21 February 2025)

[edit]

Hi Nick, I want to add more content to a wiki page of an artist. I want to add Theater and make a table with his 2024 theater performances. I can't find a tutorial about how to do it. I never added anything on wikipedia before. Do you have any tutorials that you recommend? Thank you very much. The name of the artist is Theodor Andrei, he is Romanian, he already has a page. He's a singer and an actor.Thank you so much for your help. --Aria-Cali (talk) 05:49, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Aria-Cali. Try Help:Table for a good introduction. Working on tables is really the one and only time when I use our Visual Editor Tool.
I see you’ve now managed to create one in your sandbox. Once you’re happy with it, you don’t need to submit it for review, as that only for completely new articles. Simply copy the Wikitext and paste it in to the existing article.
Working in your sandbox is incredibly sensible as they’re complex beast which, if you mess something up, can completely disrupt the person’s page. I see you’ve added dates on the wrong format - hence the red warning notices in the references. Try ‘’21 February 2025’’ instead of 02/21/25. Both editing tools have an ‘Add Reference’ function which helps you populate and preview how you citations might look. Hope this helps, Nick Moyes (talk) 09:32, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much! I'll change the dates,as you said, but now I'm even more nervous, as I don't want to disrupt the person's page. Aria-Cali (talk) 16:54, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Aria-Cali Don't fear. Firstly, just use the 'Preview' function (whether in your sandbox page initially or when copy/pasting that same wikitext for a table into an article). You can check it for errors before you hit the 'Publish' button.
But, even then, you or anyone else can revert an edit which accidentally damages a page. Just go to 'View History' and look at each of the edits. Yours will be right at the top, and there's an 'Undo' button which will revert any mistake.
Nobody gets into trouble for making Good Faith edits, even if they do temporarily disrupt a page. We only get annoyed with vandals who disrupt for fun. Should someone revert an edit you made, and you don't understand why, you are quite entitled to go to the reverting editor and politely ask the reason for their revert. Hopefully you would get an equally polite explanation and perhaps be pointed to one of our (many!) guideline pages. So, it can be a learning exercise too. Kind regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 17:05, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much Nick, I really needed your encouragement! I'll keep working on it during the weekend.
Best,
Aria Aria-Cali (talk) 21:05, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Nick,
I added my table to the Wiki page, but at the references there is something in red: "Check date values in:" is in red. I'm not sure what to do about it. What do you think, do I need to do something about it?
Thank you for your help and support.
Best,
Aria Aria-Cali (talk) 03:29, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Aria-Cali Looks like you've sorted it as I can't see those warning messages in the latest version you edited. Nick Moyes (talk) 20:29, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, everything looks great. Thank you again for your help.
Best,
Aria Aria-Cali (talk) 20:38, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Aria-Cali That's good. I'm just replying in order to explain something you wouldn't otherwise know when using talk pages, and that's that our convention is not to sign posts on a new line or two, as you've done above. Simply keep the signature or farewell remarks contiguous with the final sentence. It otherwise tends to make posts very lengthy and harder to read, even though that's the way we'd normally layout emails and letters. Best wishes, Nick Moyes (talk) 10:22, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for letting me know. This is the first time I used Wikipedia, any kind of information coming from an editor is very helpful. It's hard to know what I don't know . : ))The rule about how to sign a message makes a lot of sense. Best regards, Aria. Aria-Cali (talk) 19:55, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Führeriousgentile (20:23, 25 February 2025)

[edit]

Hiya nick, i wanted to write an article on my local mosque, sadly, it hasn't been featured in any publications , news or anything of that sort, is it still possible to write the article provided I know about the history of the mosque, it's architecture , events that occured there, and I also have many photos of the place.. looking forward to your reply! --Führeriousgentile (talk) 20:23, 25 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Führeriousgentile. I’m terribly sorry, but our notability requirements mean that we 100% do need properly published, ‘’independent’’ and reliable sources to have already written about that topic. See WP:NBUILDING and WP:NCHURCH for more details. There are millions of important buildings (and other things) in the world, but Wikipedia only accepts them if other bodies have written about them already.
If it doesn’t already have one, you could consider creating a website about it of your own. You would have far more control over what goes into it too. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 21:09, 25 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from McKayKuttner (01:53, 1 March 2025)

[edit]

Hello. I'd like to start a page for Scots actor/comedian Jock McKay aka Maxwell J. Kuttner who appeared in a few movies back in the 1930's and '40's. I have found a limited amount of info about him online (including a video - which I would reference), and quite a few photos which I have downloaded and filed in preparation. When I searched his name on Wikipedia it brought up a number of movies in which he had appeared, including, 'The Phantom Shot.' It was the only film listed where his name was highlighted. Clicking on it took me to this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jock_McKay&action=edit&redlink=1 So, terminology-wise, I am not attempting to 'edit' a page. Rather, I am planning to create one, yes? I would title the page, 'Jock McKay,' not 'McKayKuttner' - that was the user name I chose. I will be grateful for any help or advice you can give me. Best regards, Graham Walmsley text/mobile: 604.817.5994 Note I live on Canada's west coast in the village of Sechelt, BC. --McKayKuttner (talk) 01:54, 1 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for the delay in replying, @McKayKuttner; I am currently away from home.
Yes, you followed a ‘redlink’ which is to a page that doesn’t exist as yet. But whilst you could create and start editing it, that would be a bad move. Far better to start a draft article and only attempt to move it into the main encyclopaedia once it’s ready. We have a tool to help you at WP:YFA, and lots of guidance for beginners.
Its important to ensure any photos you want to use are clearly out of copyright.
Articles must be based on three or more Reliable Sources. See WP:NBIO for our notability criteria for people. Just because someone has been in a film doesn’t automatically make them notable, so you may have to dig deep into books or newspapers, too.
Creating a new article from scratch is the hardest task you can do here; even more so if you’ve no prior editing experience. We always advise spending time making small edited and adding references to existing page to gain that experience. I hope this helps get you started. Question from Rew256 on SmallAnt (15:54, 2 March 2025)

[edit]

How can I insert an image? --Rew256 (talk) 15:54, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Rew256: I am assuming you have already found an image image you want to use on Wikimedia Commons? If not, go to this main page and type a keyword in the search box (it's at the top right in desktop view). If you find an image you like, but it's not quite the right one, you could click one or more of the "Categories" listed at the very bottom of the page. This helps keep related images together and helps you find others.
It could be like this one of a cup of tea that you want to use. Using an existing one is easier that a brand new image of your own that you would first have to upload from scratch. So, click on the link in the previous sentence, or click the photograph you see here - you're taken to the same place - and look just above the picture, and beneath the filename where you'll see a line of five small links. Look for the link with the tiny Wikipedia 'W' logo and the words "Use this file". Click that link and select the text offered to "Use this file on a Wiki as a Thumbnail". (The convention is always to add an image as a thumbnail, no matter how much you'd love to make it larger.) Copy the link to your clipboard and then go to the Wikipedia page you want to add it to (let's assume we want to add it to the page we're on now). Edit the page (ie click the tab labelled Edit Source). Scroll down to the section you'd like to add it to, and paste in the text you copied at the very top of that section. By default, this adds the thumbnail picture and its caption on the right hand side of the page, as you see here. To change the caption text, just edit the text to the right of the vertical bar - or 'pipe'. Don't change the filename.jpg text itself or the image link will be broken. There are some useful links on this help page: Wikipedia:Images with further guidance and tweaks, or detailed layout possibilities at Wikipedia:Picture tutorial.
Of course, if you are using the alternative Visual Editor (which is a bit more WYSIWYG), the process is slightly different. You once again navigate to the section where the image is needed, then, in the editing toolbar, click Insert > Media. At the search bar in the popup that then appears, type the keyword to search for certain image types, or just type in the filename of your image you've already chosen from Wikimedia Commons. Select the image and then click 'Use this image'. Before inserting it you'll be prompted to add a caption. Captions can include hyperlinks, but that's probably best left for another time. I hope this helps.
If you need advice on actually uploading your own image first, that requires a slightly different answer and a mention of copyright issues. Let me know if you need further help on that. Regards from the UK. Nick Moyes (talk) 21:38, 3 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, @Antojien. It looks like you solved your issue. William Martin Boyce comment

[edit]

Last year you wrote, in response to a "how do I add a page about myself" question from William Martin Boyce, "A quick search on Google yielded a few results about deceased people called 'William Martin Boyce', but nothing in the first few pages of an extant one by that name."

Try searching for "W. M. Boyce" or "William M. Boyce" and "Baxter permutations" or "common fixed point problem." He is notable for his contributions to these two mathematical subjects. Both have their own Wikipedia pages. He published mainly from the late 1960s to early 1980s, but even today, most papers on these subjects will cite his research, in particular the papers "Commuting Functions with No Common Fixed Point" and "Baxter Permutations and Functional Composition." They're easy to find; here's one from 2017: https://www.numdam.org/item/10.5802/aif.3121.pdf

Does any of this change your view?

Question from The Good Noodle 2 (01:54, 22 May 2025)

[edit]

Silly question, can a defunct website continue to be linked to a defunct organization? You cannot reach their website through this link in the provided "website" box on the left. I'm curious if I should delete this or simply provide a note saying that the website is down.... or...(?) Anyway, thanks so much in advance!! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sammarinese_Democratic_Progressive_Party --thegoodnoodle (talk) 01:54, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@The Good Noodle 2 Hello, and apologies for the long delay in responding to your question.
There is a lot of good advice at this shortcut (WP:DEADLINK) and on the rest of that page, too.
In general, don't remove a link to a website when that link is not working. It can be marked as a 'deadlink', but in the case of http://www.ppds.sm it seemed likely that it would have been archived as an official website. Indeed, a quick check shows it has been. See https://web.archive.org/web/20190901000000*/http://www.ppds.sm/
However, the very latest saved version in 2023 isn't much use. You may have to go back a bit earlier to find the most appropriate one to use ([https://web.archive.org/web/20210323200302/http://www.ppds.sm/ this, for example, from 2021).
I hope this helps. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 13:12, 26 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2025).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, G15, has been enacted. It applies to pages generated by a large language model (LLM) without human review.
  • Following a request for comment, there is a new policy outlining the granting of permissions to view the IP addresses of temporary accounts. Temporary account deployment on the English Wikipedia is currently scheduled for September 2025, and editors can request access to the permission ahead of time. Admins are encouraged to keep an eye on the request page; there will likely be a flood of editors requesting the permission when they realize they can no longer see IP addresses.

    • The community-authorized general sanctions regarding South Asian social groups (GS/CASTE) are rescinded and folded into this new contentious topic.
  • The arbitration case Article titles and capitalisation 2 has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case closed on 31 July.

Gråbergs Gråa Sång, I am interested in this issue but not sure that I have anything useful to add. I think I agree with the word "rare" which rules out routine use but allows for the occasional exception. By coincidence, I am now curating a retrospective exhibit of 100 paintings that my sister has created over the past 50 years. She is (among other things) an exceptionally talented portrait artist but it is hard to imagine a person sitting in a studio before an artist for many hours, the artist being willing to freely license their painstaking work, but nobody being willing to spend a few minutes taking a decent freely licensed photo. So, I suppose that a have a bit of a conflict of interest about non-photographic portraits since I am working heavily with them at the moment. Cullen328 (talk) 07:51, 1 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Cullen328 Thanks. If you want to add your voice to a consensus-ish wording, please do, it never hurts to have several experienced voices agreeing, when one attempts to change policy a bit. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:06, 1 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
