Question from Mdgirl400 (16:49, 7 August 2025)

Can a nonprofit be nominated before it is famous but because of its bold humble start to create a paradigm shift in the way we plan future funerals essentially free? --Mdgirl400 (talk) 16:49, 7 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Mdgirl400 Hello! Are you trying to create an article? If so, since you say "before it is famous", I suggest you hold off on creating it, as articles require secondary reliable sources that have significant coverage and are independent of the subject so notability can be proven and information can be verified. Hope this helps! mwwv converseedits 17:12, 7 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, G15, has been enacted. It applies to pages generated by a large language model (LLM) without human review.
  • Following a request for comment, there is a new policy outlining the granting of permissions to view the IP addresses of temporary accounts. Temporary account deployment on the English Wikipedia is currently scheduled for September 2025, and editors can request access to the permission ahead of time. Admins are encouraged to keep an eye on the request page; there will likely be a flood of editors requesting the permission when they realize they can no longer see IP addresses.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case Indian military history has been closed.
    • South Asia (WP:CT/SA) is designated a contentious topic. The topic area is specifically defined as All pages related to the region of South Asia (India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal), broadly construed, including but not limited to history, politics, ethnicity, and social groups.
    • The contentious topic designations for Sri Lanka (SL) and India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan (IPA) are folded into this new contentious topic.
    • The community-authorized general sanctions regarding South Asian social groups (GS/CASTE) are rescinded and folded into this new contentious topic.
  • The arbitration case Article titles and capitalisation 2 has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case closed on 31 July.
  • The arbitration case Transgender healthcare and people has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case will close on 11 August.

Miscellaneous

  • Wikimania 2025 is happening in Nairobi, Kenya, and online from August 6 to August 9. This year marks 20 years of Wikimania. Interested users can join the online event. Registration for the virtual event is free and will remain open throughout Wikimania. You can register here now.

Question from Iranian girl 15 (05:44, 8 August 2025)

[edit]

Hello, I don't have any edited and translated articles on Wikipedia. I tried to translate the Persian page of an important person into English, but I was unable to publish it due to my inexperience status. Could you please advise me on How many articles can I be experienced after editing or translating them? --Iranian girl 15 (talk) 05:44, 8 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Iranian girl 15 Hello! This is likely due to the fact you don't have autoconfirmed. Autoconfirmed is required to create articles in the article namespace. Even then, I suggest you put your translated articles in the draft namespace and utilize the Articles for Creation process. There is also a tool that makes translating articles more streamlined, called the content translation tool, but you need to be extended confirmed to get access to it. Hope this helps! mwwv converseedits 14:13, 8 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from SykeSinger

[edit]

I'd like to help patrol new edits to catch vandalism and other edit issues. Apart from blatant vandalism, what other things should be reverted? What things shouldn't be reverted? I've seen other users put warnings on people's talk pages for vandalism, should I be doing this as well? I'd also like to look through old pages to catch any vandalism that was missed in the past. apart from clicking 'random page', is there another way to go about that? Any other advice you have would also be helpful. SykeSinger (talk) 05:51, 21 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from MikeSWeston (01:28, 6 September 2025)

[edit]

I just read the rules for punctuation and quotes after making my first (and very minor) edit. It was probably wrong, and I was biased by the rules in the U.S.

I can undo it, but wanted to ask before I do that.

Thanks. I thought I could get my feet wet in this minor way, and even that was harder than it first appeared. --MikeSWeston (talk) 01:28, 6 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Ali Asghar Abad on User:Ali Asghar Abad (14:19, 7 September 2025)

[edit]

i want to make my own page --Ali Asghar Abad (talk) 14:19, 7 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Ali Asghar Abad Hello! I suggest you stay away from doing so for quite a few weeks. Wikipedia has tons of policies and guidelines that need to be followed when creating pages, and learning those can take quite a while. Even if you decide to create it anyway, your subject needs to follow either the general notability guideline or any of the subject-specific notability guidelines. At the base level, Wikipedia articles need multiple citations to reliable, secondary, independent sources so that information can be properly verified. This can be a lot to take in, but it must be followed, else your article may be deleted. Hope this helps! mwwv converseedits 15:29, 7 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! How can I edit the info box of a political party so as to show the historical nuances of its ideology and political position more clearly? What code do I use? I have no knowledge on coding --Abotekap (talk) 18:36, 10 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Not Anarcho-Capitalism! I am talking about a party like Syriza. I kind of did that in English, but I can’t do it in Greek. Can you help me? Abotekap (talk) 18:37, 10 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Abotekap Hello! If you're having trouble using the wikitext editor, try switching to the VisualEditor! Either way, when editing the page you're going to want to look for the ideology parameter in the infobox at the top of the page, and make changes as you see fit. Hope this helps! mwwv converseedits 19:32, 10 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for answering, though I knew how to go to the ideology section already. What I don’t know is how to code, since I don’t think it has a visual editor for the info box Abotekap (talk) 05:48, 11 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Abotekap In the VisualEditor, the parameters for the infobox can be accessed by clicking on the infobox and clicking the "Edit" button. mwwv converseedits 11:18, 11 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@No.1JosephNatusfan Hello! Unfortunately, it's very likely that it's gone for good. Wikipedia doesn't have a system for saving lost edits, so it's up to the end user to make sure they have a copy of their text as a just in case measure. mwwv converseedits 11:03, 12 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary account IP viewer granted

[edit]
The temporary account IP viewer logo, composed of the Wikipedia globe with a user and an IP address

Hello, Mwwv. Per your request, your account has been granted temporary-account-viewer rights. You are now able to reveal the IP addresses of individuals using temporary accounts that are not visible to the general public. This is very sensitive information that is only to be used to aid in anti-abuse workflows. Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer for more information on this user right. It is important to remember:

  • You must not share IP address data with someone who does not have the same access permissions unless disclosure is permissible as per guidelines listed at Foundation:Policy:Wikimedia Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy.
  • Access must not be used for political control, to apply pressure on editors, or as a threat against another editor in a content dispute. There must be a valid reason to investigate a temporary user. Note that using multiple temporary accounts is not forbidden, so long as they are not used in violation of policies (for example, block or ban evasion).

It is also important to note that the following actions are logged for others to see:

  • When a user accepts the preference that enables or disables IP reveal for their account.
  • Revealing an IP address of a temporary account.
  • Listing the temporary accounts that are associated with one or more IP addresses (using the CIDR notation format).

Remember, even if a user is violating policy, avoid revealing personal information if possible. Use temporary account usernames rather than disclosing IP addresses directly, or give information such as same network/not same network or similar. If you do not want the user right anymore then please ask me or another administrator and it will be removed for you. You may also voluntarily give up access at any time by visiting Special:Preferences. Happy editing! – robertsky (talk) 03:38, 13 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

How do I create a page or article without reference --MrBigRobot (talk) 07:53, 22 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@MrBigRobot Hello! Please do not create unreferenced articles. Such articles go against Wikipedia's principle of verifiability and will most likely be deleted since notability isn't shown. Either way, you would be putting the burden on other editors to find sources, which can be seen as disruptive editing and may get you blocked. Articles must have reliable secondary sources independent of the subject. Hope this helps! mwwv converseedits 13:55, 22 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I often struggle with keeping all the information while changing a page with significant problems. For example, articles that include irrelevant information or an article that is organized as a list of dates but is marked for an editor to change it to prose. How do I deal with this? Do I delete the excess information? Do I keep it? Question from Cataract10 (18:18, 21 October 2025)

[edit]

Hello! I do not really understand the "copyedit" type of editing. Is there a quicker way to locate the problem within the article without skimming the entire thing? For example, if an article is flagged for "subjective tone," is there a specifc part that gets highlighted/flagged or do you just have to find it? --Cataract10 (talk) 18:18, 21 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Cataract10 Hello! Unfortunately, the majority of the time, articles/sections that are tagged with the banner will probably not have any inline templates that mark exactly where the problem is. @Charlesmgraham79 Hello! Please do not post your article. Wikipedia has many strict guidelines regarding conflict of interest. It comes with many restrictions on editing the article. I suggest you stop working on the article if it's unfinished. If your great grandfather is notable, that is, has multiple reliable, independent, secondary sources about him, someone would have already created an article on him. On top of this, do not directly edit any of your family's articles. It is strongly discouraged and could possibly lead to you getting blocked. Camilla is my mother cousin I read this "According to Abbott Gleason's father, Basil Gray did not approve of higher education for girls and so she did not attend university, instead," this i suspected untrue Camilla mother my great aunt was highly educated Nicolete Gray - Wikipedia I checked this fact with mother and her 9ie Cammilla brother Edmund and sister Cecilia and they confirmed the reason see not attend university was she wanted to be ballerina but was to tall for this, (her sister sophie did go university with help from my great aunt) great aunt Nicolette also wrote a history of her daughter that ran to mid 1960's Edmund who is quite old is looking this out. I don't know who abbot Gleason father is but I would suggest he know rather less about situation than Camilla brother and sister cousin. I fully appricate you don't want family member writing pluff piece on family member however who is better postion to know someone. Charlesmgraham79 (talk) 15:17, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Hhc rajdeep (08:18, 23 October 2025)

Note: Hhc rajdeep's mentor I dream of horses is away.

Hello I am trying to publish a biography of a living person can you help me I have links and articles of the same --Hhc rajdeep (talk) 08:18, 23 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Hhc rajdeep Hello! Generally, we do not accept requests to edit drafts on demand. The draft is the responsibility of the creator, and should mainly be edited by them. Most of my suggestions would mirror the reasons for declination and the responses you got at the help desk, so I would advise you to refer to those. Hope this helps! mwwv converseedits 15:23, 23 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Mastermamaeditor (14:52, 23 October 2025)

[edit]

Hi - I want to create a new business page about a business that doesn't have it. It's called Premier Invest. --Mastermamaeditor (talk) 14:52, 23 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Mastermamaeditor Hello! There's quite a lot that goes into creating a page; first, you want to determine if the company is notable. You'll need to find multiple reliable independent secondary sources with significant coverage of the subject. If you cannot find enough sources, then the subject is non-notable and does not deserve an article. Secondly, disclose any possible conflict of interest or paid editing that you may have/will be doing. Thirdly, draft your article in the draft namespace, and once you've finished, submit it for review via Articles for Creation.
This is all a very involved process, and I recommend you don't start out with creating articles. Wikipedia has many policies on content, and many factors need to be taken into account when writing content. I've put many links on your talk page that should help you get started. Hope this helps! mwwv converseedits 15:07, 23 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Guide to temporary accounts

[edit]

Hello, Mwwv. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.

Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.

How do temporary accounts work?

Editing from a temporary account
  • When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern: ~2025-12345-67 (a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5).
  • All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
  • A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
  • As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
    • There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
    • There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.

Impact for administrators

  • It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects the autoblock option.
  • It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
  • Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. On Special:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should use Special:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).

Rules about IP information disclosure

  • Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access is generally not allowed (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or ~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
  • Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward 3RR, but not Hey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67)
  • See Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.

Useful tools for patrollers

  • It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via the User Info card, available in Preferences → Appearance → Advanced options → Tick Enable the user info card
    • This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
  • Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
  • Similarly, Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
  • The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.
