"Troika"

[edit]

Was going by https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/29/world/europe/navalny-prison-russia.html]. Brycehughes (talk) 02:25, 7 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Brycehughes:. I cannot have an opinion now. Please copy me the quote: the article is behind the paywall. But I still find it dubious: it is well-known that it is called "Yamskaya troika", not simply "troika".
 --Altenmann >talk 02:30, 7 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
"But what made the prison, known as IK-3 or the Troika, dreaded even by Russia’s hardened inmates was the exceptional psychological pressure and loneliness, they said. It was a system devised to break the human spirit, by making survival depend on total and unconditional obedience to the will of guards." Brycehughes (talk) 02:33, 7 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Brycehughes: I see. Uneducated statement. Anything identified by number "3" is colloquially known as "troika", i.e., it is not proper name, just as a group of tree objects is called "triplet". E.g., Yakovlev Yak-3 is also colloquially called "troika" by the pilots, etc. As I said, the proper name is "Yamskaya Troika". By the way, it is not a prison, corroborating the ignorance of the author in the subject. --Altenmann >talk 02:42, 7 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Alright – I'll defer to you. By the way, what do you mean "it is not a prison"? What is it then? Brycehughes (talk) 03:02, 7 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Brycehughes: "ИК-3" means Исправительная колония 3, "corrective colony number 3". There are many of them "ИК-3", only this one is notable enough due to Navalny. --Altenmann >talk 03:09, 7 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ah ok. In this case they're using "prison" in the general sense in the article, where "corrective colony" would be a subtype of prison. Regardless, I can see why it would probably not be helpful to list everything that could colloquially be called "3" on the troika page. Thanks, Brycehughes (talk) 03:14, 7 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Moskal-Charivnyk edit

[edit]

Hey Altenmann, hope you're doing well! :) Saw your recent edit on Moskal-Charivnyk where you removed the Russian language name from the lead with the edit summary russian translation irrelevant: this is English-language wikipedia. While there are many pages where there probably doesn't need to have/shouldn't have the Russian translation/transliteration in the lead, this is determined by WP:RS and the weight that the bulk of sources lend to particular names. Many Ukrainian movies from Soviet times were more known and recorded in WP:RS in Russian so having the Russian language title is proper. There's no WP-policy based restriction on non-English names; sources and their coverage of the topic have precedence with that. Thought I'd let you know to help out and many thanks for your overall great contributions! Feel free to ping with questions tho, especially for Ukrainian topics. Cheers, Dan the Animator 19:28, 27 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I deleted the one you tagged for speedy instead of CFD, but for Category:Capitalist realism I'm less comfortable doing that since you listed it for CFD — but if you were to withdraw the CFD and retag it for speedy instead I'd be more willing, Bearcat (talk) 21:10, 4 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Reverted edit

[edit]

Hello, my edit to Dmytro Dontsov was not vandalism though I can see why you might have thought I was whitewashing Dontsov's views. The source that I was citing said this: The sections on race science, however, remained, suggesting that Dontsov never abandoned Günther’s teachings.

I was concerned that "his racist characterisations of Russians remained" was Wikivoice and decided to more directly represent the source. I originally wrote this sentence and pretty much the whole article under a series of UK IP addresses. The ones that preceded this edit should be based in Spain since I was on holiday. 2A00:23C5:11E:F901:881C:46A3:47D8:FA1E (talk) 17:14, 12 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Rostislav and Rotislav

[edit]

I just added a comment on the talk page of this article, and I see you edited it a fair amount recently, so I will repeat here. Is "Rotislav" simply a variant of "Rostislav"? If so, the page should probably have Rotislavs as well. It seems pretty obvious, but I'm not a Slavic speaker at all so I don't want to make a mistake. If you end up adding Rotislavs to the page yourself, add Russian composer and writer Feofil Tolstoy as well, since he used "Rotislav" as a pseudonym. Regards, Brianyoumans (talk) 18:45, 21 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Brianyoumans: It is typo. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. Fixed surprizingly large numbr of pages in wp. Feel free to ask about any suspicious Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Polish, Lithuanian, Yiddish, and Hebrew subjects. All other Slavic languages OK as well, but not so sure. --Altenmann >talk 22:16, 21 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Haredi dialect

[edit]

Saw on a user tp you wanted to create a Haredi dialect article. Replied but forgot to tag you. Isnt that essentially Yeshivish? Or strongly related? Also, Yinglish. Very interested regardless. Metallurgist (talk) 22:28, 28 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Opinion on source

[edit]

Hi! I saw we made edits on the same article. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bastiano_Ferrari&action=history I made similar edits and assume you agree with me on the sources.

I have been working with an editor on some music related articles, and want a second opinion on the Rolling Stone. I think this article cannot be used for sourcing to establish notability. It has a note it is a third party branded content. https://www.rollingstone.co.uk/culture/bastiano-ferrari-the-art-of-diversification-its-not-for-everybody-46533/

There is this section about the Rolling Stone. Rolling Stone (Culture Council)

WP:ROLLINGSTONECON

The article I shared is self-published by the third party, it has a note it is a branded- which means "paid" content. Do you agree it should be removed as well?

WestwoodHights573 (talk) 17:22, 30 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@WestwoodHights573: I agree that this article is an ENORMOUS piece of puffery I have never seen in my wikilife and must be removed from references. When removing, put WP:ROLLINGSTONECON into edit summary. --Altenmann >talk 17:56, 30 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I had the same reaction. Not often that I see something like this. I put WP:ROLLINGSTONECON in the edit summary. WestwoodHights573 (talk) 18:09, 30 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@WestwoodHights573: Next time type [[WP:ROLLINGSTONECON]] i.e., in double square brackets (and other similar shortcuts), to make it a wikilink oter editors may click. --Altenmann >talk 18:14, 30 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The article Russian nobility and royalty has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This page is not useful in its current form. "Russian nobility and royalty" is not a single subject.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist.
