Consider moving to "Great Intelligence"?
[edit]Considering the events of The Snowmen should this article be retitled and refocussed on the Great Intelligence rather than the Yeti, explaining its use of the Yeti, Snowmen and ice governess as its physical presence? Moochocoogle (talk) 23:41, 25 December 2012 (UTC)
- In theory I'd agree, but most of the information I've found looking through Google books and in other articles trying to spin this page into more of an out-of-universe look at the Yeti and Intelligence seem to focus on the Yeti, with the Intelligence being a little quirk of their back-story that gives them focus. Comics (talk) 00:40, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
- OK, this has been discussed on the Great Intelligence talk page and the result was not to merge Rankersbo (talk) 07:15, 3 June 2013 (UTC)
Tidied up
[edit]I just went through and tidied the article up, adding what I could to a new 'Creation' section, offering what discussion I could on the Yeti design and the changes between the costume of The Abominable Snowmen and The Web of Fear in a 'Physical Characteristics' section, gave them more of a 'History' section like other Doctor Who monsters and even added a 'Reception' section based on some information I found. I'm personally proud of it :) Comics (talk) 12:07, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

Hey, I will be reviewing this. Expect comments by Tuesday :) DaniloDaysOfOurLives (talk) 16:51, 4 May 2025 (UTC)
Hey, sorry for my lateness, I have been very tired because of my new antidepressants and I was sleeping for most of the day. The article is very well-written and very interesting, well done! I can't see any major issues and earwig shows no copyright violations. Here are my comments for improvements - most are just about clarity for readers.
Lead:
1.) "The Yeti resemble the cryptozoological creatures also called the Yeti, and serve the Great Intelligence" - I think this could be split into 2 sentences or perhaps clarified as to whether the its the DW Yeti or the other Yeti that serve the GI
- Done. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 18:01, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
2.) "which first appeared trying to form a physical body so as to conquer the Earth" - This could do with clarity as to whether it's referring to the Great Intelligence or the Yeti
- Reworded a bit. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 18:01, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
3.) "The serial was taken on out of a desire for more on-location shooting" - Could you clarify the serial? I think some readers may think that it is the whole DW show
- Done. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 18:01, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
4.) "regards to the success of the series' earthbound formula" - What is meant by "earthbound formula"?
- Clarifying wording to make it more clear but it's basically what it means. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 18:01, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
5.) "The Yeti have been the subject of analysis" - This could be briefly expanded on if possible?
- Every bit of analysis is on a different aspect of the Yeti. It's enough to meet SIGCOV and such but not enough to put a given defining aspect in the lead. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 18:01, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
6.) "with actor Jon Pertwee known for quoting that "There is nothing more frightening than to find a Yeti sitting on your loo in Tooting Bec" " - I think this can be paraphrased or removed as I think it may be undue weight. If it stays, it needs a ref as quotes always need a ref, even if the lead (annoying, I know, as I hate refs in the lead!)
- Honestly I only included it because there's not much I can summarize in the lead without undue weight to a given source, due to the varied level of commentary on the Yeti. Not sure what's best there, let me know your thoughts. For clarity, where in MOS:QUOTE does it say it needs to be at the end of the sentence? I can't find that anywhere in the guideline. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 18:01, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
History:
1.) Can you please briefly clarify or explain who the Great Intelligence is?
- Tried to add a brief point of explanation in the body, basically reflecting the lead. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 18:01, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
2.) Is it possible to link "High Lama Padmasamabhava" to a subsection or something so readers can learn more about it?
- This character only appears in one serial of the series, which is already linked, so there's not much more that can be done here. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 18:01, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
3.) "the Yeti fall dormant" - Can this be clarified?
- Not sure how to clarify it further. They fall dormant because the Intelligence is no longer controlling them, as they are robots without minds of their own. I'm not sure how that can be made more clear. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 18:01, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
4.) "Several Yeti curiosities" - can this please be clarified/expanded upon too?
- Removed, a leftover from the old draft I missed. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 18:01, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
5.) "but it is again defeated and banished" - can you please explain what "it" is?
- Clarified. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 18:01, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
6.) Is there any chance to briefly explain or link "the Death Zone"?
- Clarified. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 18:01, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
7.) Is there any way to link Professor Travers, Anne Travers, Captain Knight and/or the Brigadier? I would do them myself but I think you know the DW articles much better than me and so you would know the best targets (if there are any)
- The Brigadier is the same character as the Colonel, which I've clarified. Knight and Anne are one-off characters, and while Travers has a redirect to another article, he is not mentioned there, so it's not very helpful, and any other target is already discussed in the article already. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 18:01, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
Spin-off media:
1.) Could you please explain the Yeti's role in the first paragraph?
- Clarified. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 18:01, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
2.) "the summoning of a creature from the universe to come goes wrong and instead sees the Great Intelligence merged with that entity" - this could use rewording
3.) Could you please explain the Yeti's role in the "Millennial Rites"?
4.) "Millennial Rites follows the New Adventure All-Consuming Fire by Andy Lane, published in 1994, in identifying the Great Intelligence with H. P. Lovecraft's Yog-Sothoth, a being from the universe before this one. The Great Intelligence also appeared in a back-up comic strip in Doctor Who Weekly #31–#34."- I do not really see the relevance of these sentences as they don't mention the Yeti?
5.) The first two paragraphs could do with sources - I am aware of MOS:PLOTSOURCE though so it is not make or break but I think some kind of source would be helpful.
Creation:
1.) Could you please clarify who "Henry Lincoln and Mervyn Haisman" are? (e.g. screenwriters/producers)
- Done. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 18:01, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
2.) "who expressed disappointment in the lack of Earth-bound stories in his first season as the Doctor" - Can it be clarified what "Earth-bound" means?
- Stories bound to Earth, hence the name. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 18:01, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
3.) Can you link or clarify what "control spheres" are?
- They are an aspect of the Yeti used by the Intelligence to control and send signals to the Yeti. I've added clarity in the plot section. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 18:01, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
4.) Could there be a brief sentence explaining why the Daleks were written out/why the producers wanted to replace them?
- Not sure how necessary this is, since the Daleks' reasons for leaving is largely unrelated to the Yeti. The main relevant part is that the Yeti came in to replace them. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 00:49, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
Design:
1.) "The Yeti costumes by Martin Baugh in both of their appearances" - I think this is missing a word
- Fixed. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 00:49, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
2.) "The costumes were hot" - I think this could use rewording (e.g. "Actors needed to dress lightly underneath as it could get hot inside the costumes")
- Done. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 00:49, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
3.) Is it possible to explain what the " Bad weather" was (e.g. was it too hot, too cold, windy, raining, humid etc?)?
- Changed "bad" to "rainy". Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 00:49, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
4.) Is it possible to explain if an actor also used the costume for the portrayal of a "real yeti"?
- Reworded. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 00:49, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
5.) I linked Yak fiber but please remove if it is not what was meant
- Looks fine to me. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 00:49, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
6.) "The Yeti used "web guns" in this serial to attack" seems repetitive, so many it could be removed or moved to the "History" section?
- Accidentally left in a second usage, woops. Removed and expanded a bit to show why it's here. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 00:49, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
7.) "with the old model being transitioned to the new model during the serial's events" - Can you clarify what this means?
- Changed to design for clarity. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 00:49, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
8.) Could you please clarify whether the costume in the "The Five Doctors" is infested in the serial or actually infested with fleas in real life?
- I feel the current wording satisfies this fine. The text specifies "costume", not anything relating to the actual in-universe creature. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 00:49, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
9.) As this section includes information on the casting and other elements, I think it should be change to "Design and portrayal"
- I disagree, since creation and developmental info are not related to either of those concepts. The current title is broad but covers all elements of the section. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 00:49, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
Reception and legacy:
1.) "obituary called the Yeti his 'lasting legacy' to the series" - Can you please clarify whether the lasting legacy was to the whole of Doctor Who or just the serial?
- The text says "lasting legacy to Doctor Who fans" so I assume for the series. Tried clarifying a bit. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 00:49, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
2.) "successful Earthbound format of the series" - Could this please be clarified?
- Per above. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 00:49, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
3.) Can you please clarify what "Classic era" it is referring to? Is it the "Classic era" era of DW? If so, can you clarify when this was?
- Tried clarifying. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 00:49, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
4.) "Simon Morgan-Russell, writing in the piece An Enemy Within: The London Underground and Doctor Who's "The Web of Fear", believed that the original Yeti designs featured in The Abominable Snowmen were the epitome of antagonists in the Classic era, writing that they were "awkward, hulking monsters, slowed down by the weight or inflexibility of the actors' costumes"." - This needs a ref at the end of the sentence as per the MOS all sentences with quotes need refs at the end of the sentence
- Per above. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 00:49, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
5.) Could you briefly state what "the social and political climate of the time" was?
- The article runs through a whole ton of factors that I feel would just create an UNDUE situation if I tried to cover them all, since cherry picking wouldn't be effective, but including all of them would be too numerous. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 00:49, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
6.) Could you please say who "Graham Sleight" is?
- Good catch. Clarified. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 00:49, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
Other:
1.) Could you please archive sources #5, #7 and #12 please?
- Will get to this in a second. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 00:49, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
2.) I have done some minor edits, I hope that's okay
- Reverted the ones in design where the smaller paragraphs were lumped into the bigger one, as I feel the entire prior paragraph being tied into the Web of Fear makes it so anything else tacked on would be better off separated to avoid confusion and/or being overstuffed. The changes are much appreciated regardless. Thank you so much. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 00:49, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
3.) Can you please link BBC in source #10? Done
4.) The history section could do with a free image, but it is not make or break.
- Not sure what else to put there since the lead uses our only free Doctor Who Yeti image. The only other relevant image I can think of to put there is of the Intelligence, and there are no free use images of that character, barring images of the actor who portrayed them in the revived run of the show, but those appearances are notably devoid of Yeti, so I'm not sure how relevant it would be. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 00:49, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
Once these have been addressed, I will do a source spotcheck and hopefully pass the article. Please let me know if you need any help at all or have any questions! :) DaniloDaysOfOurLives (talk) 04:53, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
- @DaniloDaysOfOurLives: Responded to your comments. Let me know on a few of these, since I do have questions/clarifications needed on a few. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 00:49, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
- @DaniloDaysOfOurLives just to let you know, I incorporated a few more sources into the article from another discussion. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 18:21, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
- Hey, I think this is all fine. I love the expansion, it has really benefited the article!! I do have the following questions though:
- 1.) In regards to your question, WP:WHYCITE says "Sources are also required when quoting someone, with or without quotation marks, or closely paraphrasing a source" and also MOS:QUOTE, which says, "Per the verifiability policy, direct quotations must be accompanied by an inline citation from a reliable source that supports the material". This is why I was recommending to paraphrase the quote in the lead as I personally am not a fan of quotes in the lead
- 2.) What do you think of [1] this edit? I am not sure if it should be in the lead as it seems to be not very neutral. I would recommend saying that they well received rather than just "iconic" as I have not seen that particular word used in the reception section.
- 3.) I have made an edit upon the source check.
- Spotchecked Sources #12, #14, #18 and #20. I have 2 concerns:
- 1.) I can't really see how Source #12 supports "Lincoln chose the stories of the yeti as a suitable concept around which to create a serial for the program"
- 2.) I can't see in Source #18 that "The Yeti were designed costumes by Martin Baugh in both of their appearances"
- Once these have been addressed I will pass the article :D DaniloDaysOfOurLives (talk) 11:11, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
- @DaniloDaysOfOurLives I removed the "iconic" stuff; that was OR added by another editor during the course of the review I hadn't noticed until I was reviewing the edit summaries earlier. Removed both of the sources since those are covered by the other sources being cited to that info. 12 was one I'm 90% sure I planned to replace with Complete History but forgot to. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 13:24, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
- @DaniloDaysOfOurLives just to let you know, I incorporated a few more sources into the article from another discussion. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 18:21, 7 May 2025 (UTC)

New GA, long enough and well-written. No copyvio issues - the one 20% hit is clearly taken from this article. QPQ is done. I would recommend against use of the image; I don't think it is particularly valuable at this scale. Additionally, copyright of costumes is complicated and it's not clear whether freedom of panorama in the UK extends to paid exhibitions and non-permanent exhibitions; given that, I would be hesitant about including it on the front page.
- For the hook, ALT0 and ALT1 are both okay but bland; I don't think the series needs to be mentioned. (The purpose of the hook is to entice a reader to look at the article, not to tell them everything.) I would suggest trimming ALT0 to something like "the roar of the Yeti was made by slowing down the sound of a flushing toilet?" or even "the roar of the Yeti was made from a flushing toilet?" Pi.1415926535 (talk) 07:22, 11 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Pi.1415926535: I mention the series primarily because it would be misleading otherwise. Removing it would imply a "real" Yeti of some kind sounded like that, or perhaps one of the many other usages of the term may be implied instead. Our job is not to confuse, but to inform, so avoiding any misinterpretation is for the best.
- I am fine with not using the image per your above. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 22:03, 11 May 2025 (UTC)
I tend towards the cheekier side, but it's fine that you don't. Good to go for ALT0 without the image. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 23:01, 11 May 2025 (UTC)
