Draft:Hiroshi Funato

Hiroshi Funato (Japanese: 船戸博史) is a Japanese double bassist active since the 1980s, based in the Kansai region of Japan. His work includes performances in jazz, free improvisation, experimental music, and folk. Funato has taken part in projects such as the improvisational trio SIGHTS, the duo Fuchigami to Funato, LOW FISH, and Compostela, and has released recordings as a leader.

Career

[edit]

Funato began performing in the Japanese music scene in the 1980s, particularly in the Kansai region. In 2004, he released his first leader album LOW FISH (OFF NOTE ON-54), a trio recording with multi-instrumentalist Kanji Nakao and tuba player Takeo Sekijima.[1] OFF NOTE described the recording as "non-genre instrumental music" incorporating elements such as jazz, rock, folk, Okinawan shima-uta, and chindon-bayashi.[2]

He is a member of the improvisational group SIGHTS, with trombonist Yutaka Ohara and drummer Yasuhiro Yoshigaki. The group released a cassette album later reissued on CD as El Sur.[3] In a 1996 interview with Jazz Critique, Funato described SIGHTS as "the first band I engaged in with a strong sense of membership" and said it created "a uniquely beautiful world" that was difficult to categorize, focusing on collective improvisation and varied influences.[4]

Funato also performs with vocalist Junko Fuchigami in the duo Fuchigami to Funato. As the Fuchigami to Funato Quartet with Wataru Ohkuma and Shuichi Chino, they released Hakugaku to Mugaku in 2000; in a 2010 review, Rooftop magazine wrote that the album "had not lost its warmth nearly ten years after its release" and praised its "pure song repertoire".[5] The duo appeared at the Kyoto Music Expo (京都音楽博覧会) in 2007.[6]

Funato contributed to the compilation album Jazz Hip Jap Project in 1993, and played bass on Kobe Yee!! by pianist Satoko Fujii, released by Crab Apple Records in 2007.[7][8] The duo Fuchigami & Funato released a live album Live in Europe 2007–2013 through Farside Music, documenting performances in various European countries.[9]

Musical style

[edit]

Descriptions of Funato's performances in label materials and reviews highlight physicality, spontaneity, and interaction, with frequent use of unexpected sounds and chance elements.[10] Some label descriptions have compared aspects of his music to the Art Ensemble of Chicago.[10]
