Using a custom assessment mask for SIAs and other edits to Template:WikiProject Ukraine
[edit]Hi all! Building on from a previous discussion here and based on a suggestion from @MSGJ, starting this thread to discuss these edits to the template. The main goal of the edits was to implement a custom page assessment mask (basically the scale that a WikiProject uses in assessing articles, FA, GA, B-class, C-class, List, Portal-class, etc). The custom page is necessary to include the class-type WP:Set-index article (abbreviated SIA), a special type of disambiguation page. WP:Ukraine currently has over 400 of these types of pages. Because, for whatever reason, SIA is not recognized as part of the standard (default) assessment scale, it is necessary to implement a custom class mask that includes it. Other WikiProjects which have also implemented custom class masks for similar reasons are WP:Video games and WP:Military history (Military history uses the shorter abbreviation SI instead). For reasons explained in greater detail in the previous discussion linked above, it is beneficial to clearly mark SIAs as such. Unfortunately, the overall Wikipedia code framework doesn't recognize SIA as a standard class and default inaccurately shows anything with that in the markup as a list-class page. That said, for reasons explained in greater detail in the previous discussion, using the custom class mask allows to bypass this default setting to allow the SIA label to show on talkpages, next to the WikiProject Ukraine talkpage template. This also automatically categorizes it in the category Category:SIA-Class_Ukraine_articles, which is extraordinarily helpful for maintenance. That's the key aim of these edits.
The other edits I added in consist of cleaning up the code markup to read easier, use more common/current markup, and increase its functionality by adding the project to-do list. I thought these other added edits were a net positive though I'm fine either way. Which ever markup is used to fully recognize the SIA class is the main goal for me.
Aside from the above, feel free to add suggestions about adding additional features or if there's other particular thoughts or ideas you had about the template. Thanks in advance all for the discussion! Best, Dan the Animator 19:48, 15 October 2025 (UTC)
- Also, although I don't plan on doing this too soon and up to others' opinions too, I thought it would be good to expand the WikiProject Ukraine template to include all three task forces (currently it only includes Football and Crimea, excluding the Subdivisions task force for some reason) and some other miscellaneous edits I'm not remembering at the moment.
- Unfortunately I'll also be exceptionally busy this week so my apologies in advance if I don't reply here too soon but I'll likely have time next week to follow up on anything and will follow up sooner if need be. Dan the Animator 19:59, 15 October 2025 (UTC)
- There being no response after a week, I went ahead and (re-)implemented SIA class on the template, and set one article to use it as a test. --PresN 13:13, 22 October 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks PresN! :) I saw the test on Talk:Antonivka and it looks great, and other talkpages with the WikiProject template look okay too. In case though, given the original issue dealt with less-apparent backend issues, pinging @Bearcat to see if they notice any issues. Also pinging @MSGJ just in case for comment. If there's no issues at all with the template markup added by PresN, I'll do an AWB bot run on the WP:Ukraine SIAs sometime soon so the talkpage markup matches that of Talk:Antonivka. The other proposed template changes can wait for the future when there's consensus. Best, Dan the Animator 23:57, 25 October 2025 (UTC)
- I'll keep an eye out, but it looks fine so far. As long as the new edits don't leave a mess of redlinked categories behind, it should all be good. Bearcat (talk) 03:02, 26 October 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks @Bearcat! If @MSGJ has no opposition, I'll be re-adding the WP:Ukraine-specific SIA markup, as on Talk:Antonivka. Dan the Animator 18:48, 26 October 2025 (UTC)
- I've removed some redundant parameters from the sandbox version. Apart from that, it should be good to go. If you are interested in automatically detecting and rating these SIAs I may be able to help — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 22:01, 26 October 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks @MSGJ! :) Just to double check, @PresN does the new sandbox version look alright? I noticed Martin took out the
|QUALITY_SCALE=subpage
markup, which you readded in your template edit, though not sure which way it should be. Also thank you Martin for the offer! Your help would be perfect and I'd be excited to help implement an auto SIA detector/rater. I think PresN also has substantial experience with SIAs and might be able to help get it started eventually too. Dan the Animator 19:33, 27 October 2025 (UTC)- I added it because I saw that the instructions at {{Class mask}} said to (and WPVG has it and I know that implementation works even if it's a little archaic in spots), but I didn't check the module code to verify that it's needed, so I have no reason to doubt MSGJ that it's not. I've only ever set SIAs manually, so I welcome whatever ideas Martin has. --PresN 21:59, 27 October 2025 (UTC)

- Have now checked the module code and you're of course correct; I've fixed the outdated Class mask doc. --PresN 13:07, 28 October 2025 (UTC)
