Arbitration

  • After a motion, arbitration enforcement page protections no longer need to be logged in the AELOG. A bot now automatically posts protections at WP:AELOG/P. To facilitate this bot, protection summaries must include a link to the relevant CT page (e.g. [[WP:CT/BLP]]), and you will receive talk page reminders if you forget to specify the contentious topic but otherwise indicate it is an AE action.

Would you run Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/Denbies for TFA in Dec? It had two noms before but Sagiciousphil didn't want it run, but he's not edited in 4.5 years. MisawaSakura (talk) 13:46, 10 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

She. She contacted me by email and asked me not to. I'm still inclined to hold to that. I won't always be. Wehwalt (talk) 13:49, 10 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
OK. We'll hold off for now. MisawaSakura (talk) 13:50, 10 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

TFA and music

[edit]
story · music · places

Thank you today for Fourpence (British coin), about "a coin which was never very popular, but which when brought back in the mid-19th century caused minor controversy. For some reason, it was more popular in Scotland and in British Guiana than in England and Wales, though the reasons for that lineup seem a bit obscure."! - Enjoyed. - Congratulations to the recognition above which came with a reminder of what made me repeat "and others who have just given up" on my talk every time I remember people who died (today: Lotte Ledl, Theo Jörgensmann, Wanda Perdelwitz). My story has a cute video of the improvising jazz clarinetist, made for children, - enjoy! - Today is also the birthday of a friend whom I met when she conducted Suscepit Israel in rehearsal. The concert opened with Vivaldi's Dixit Dominus for double choir, enjoy its brilliant conclusion! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:46, 14 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

December TFAs: I have a FAC open for a Christmas Cantata, which you kindly supported. As it is the work's 300th anniversary this year on 25 December, it would be better to run it this year than next, provided the FAC is successful. One reviewer promises a look this weekend. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:17, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Wehwalt, If this is promoted (and there are a couple of opposes against it at the moment), then obviously I don’t have a problem with A Christmas Carol being dropped in its favour. - SchroCat (talk) 18:46, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. There is one oppose, but it's sources, so one I take seriously. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:22, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Just make sure I'm aware of the outcome. I will probably move through the scheduling pretty rapidly over the next week but of course I will change it once I am aware of the promotion.. Wehwalt (talk) 21:12, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Gerda Arendt Good luck with that, I hope it works out for you. But as for me, I haven't been able to discern any pattern as to when a FAC is promoted. Some of them have 5-6 supports and been just sitting at FAC for weeks thereafter. The whole evolution seems rather nebulous to me. MisawaSakura (talk)
A FAC with an oppose is usually not promoted. Everybody is welcome to look into the sourcing, and I accept as conom whoever adds to please the reviewer. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:28, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That's fairly understandable, but I see some with no opposes and all supports just sit there. MisawaSakura (talk) 21:30, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what to do. The source reviewer said they have no time until the weekend and we might ignore their oppose. It would be easier if they'd strike it instead. There are supports by FA veterans such as yourself, but also Hog Farm and Ceoil who looked at the sources, and others. We are in a topic for which we have FAs for 13 years now, and early source reviews rather wanted to eliminate sources than to consider more. Someone else could do a source review if wanted. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:37, 23 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, I'm still traveling and don't have time to do a source review until next week. Wehwalt (talk) 00:57, 25 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, no, I didn't mean you to do a source review, as the potential TFA delegate you'd be not impartial, nor as my friend. Update: the source reviewer has found time to look, and we talk. Perhaps watch and see where we may have misunderstandings. Next Easter we will have a 301st anniversary, why should Christmas be different? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:23, 25 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
300th is better than 301st if it passes. Wehwalt (talk) 11:11, 25 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It will be 301 at best. FAC was archived, and I won't argue against it, just begin a PR. Go ahead as planned with the Dickens. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:14, 25 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
299 years ago, a Bach cantata was first performed - that one had three source reviews. I opened the PR for the other one, with four issues, and four possibilities to just sign yes or no, - please check. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:14, 27 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
300 years ago: another one, Gott der Herr ist Sonn und Schild, BWV 79, on the occasion for which it was written, Reformation Day - it's not only Halloween today. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:24, 31 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

FA Mentorship?

[edit]

Hey there, I saw your name on the FAC mentorship page and was wondering whether you'd be willing to mentor me. I recently successfully nominated the University of Chicago to GA, but I am now hoping to get it to FA. Thanks! Charter6281 (talk) 18:25, 14 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, I lack the time right now to help you. Wehwalt (talk) 07:56, 15 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

TFA Question

[edit]

Hello. I have a quick question about the Melaka Fray TFA. Thank you for writing the blurb and setting it up, but I was wondering if there was any particular reason that an image was not used? I do no have any strong feelings about it either, but I was just curious as the article does images for both of the people primarily responsible for creating the character. I more so just wanted to keep this in mind if I ever write TFA blurbs or do any TFA requests in the future. I hope you are having a wonderful day so far! Aoba47 (talk) 15:20, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I guess I didn't look past the fact the lead image was fair use, which we can't use. Do you have an idea for which free use image to use? Wehwalt (talk) 18:25, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That is fair. I would think that either the image of Joss Whedon (the writer for the character) or Karl Moline (the artist) could be used for the blurb. Both images are used later in the article. Just to be clear, I do not have a strong opinion about it either way. I was more so just curious about it. If it helps a separate image of Whedon was used for a TFA on a separate Buffy character. Aoba47 (talk) 21:49, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I've added it and trimmed the blurb. We are allowed 1,100 characters if no photo and 1,025 if there is. Wehwalt (talk) 23:12, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for doing this! Sorry for the super late reply. Aoba47 (talk) 13:56, 27 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

A very helpful FA reviewer

[edit]

FYI: There is a very helpful reviewer at FAC, MSIncccc, that has reviewed several of my nominations, and always has fine suggestions. I visited their WP home page and noticed they had written this: "The following are some of the goals I hope to achieve before I leave school: ... Receiving a thank button click from UndercoverClassicist, Wehwalt, and Generalissima by virtue of my work. They are among my inspirations." I thought that was kind of cool, and so I'm notifying you of their wish. Of course, you already got pinged when they wrote it ... so you can do what you wish with this reminder. Noleander (talk) 18:08, 29 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

That's very nice and I will look out for it. I confess to underusing the thank button. Wehwalt (talk) 18:13, 29 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Guide to temporary accounts

[edit]

Hello, Wehwalt. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.

Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.

How do temporary accounts work?

Editing from a temporary account
  • When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern: ~2025-12345-67 (a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5).
  • All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
  • A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
  • As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
    • There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
    • There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.

How to enable IP Reveal

Impact for administrators

  • It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects the autoblock option.
  • It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
  • Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. On Special:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should use Special:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).

Rules about IP information disclosure

  • Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access is generally not allowed (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or ~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
  • Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward 3RR, but not Hey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67)
  • See Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.

Useful tools for patrollers

  • It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via the User Info card, available in Preferences → Appearance → Advanced options → Tick Enable the user info card
    • This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
  • Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
  • Similarly, Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
  • The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.

November music

[edit]

Today I remember a singer who impressed me on stage. - Repeating: you are invited to a peer review after FAC, - in a poll, you could simply mark yes or no for the four open questions (#1: link a third time? #2: table in a separate article? #3: is book "recommended" by Google a reliable reference? #4: prose in description?). It's an experiment. The piece has its 300th anniversary on Christmas Day, and should be as good as possible by then, even if probably not TFA. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:16, 6 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Delete requests

[edit]

Hi. When I first made my sandboxes, I made them under user talk. Someone recently told me they're supposed to be under User space, not user talk. So I've fixed that but need the user talk ones deleted.

These are the new ones that need to be kept: User:MisawaSakura/Sandbox1 User:MisawaSakura/Sandbox2

These are the ones that can go away, can you delete them: User talk:MisawaSakura/Sandbox User talk:MisawaSakura/Sandbox2
