TFA

[edit]
story · music · places

Thank you today for Trinity (nuclear test), introduced (in 2014): This article is about the very first nuclear test, and the most famous. I promised last year that I would do my best to get it through FAC in time for the 70th anniversary on 16 July 2015. It has been nearly ten years since its previous nomination."! - I remember a 2016 TFA in today's story, in memory of 16 July 1916, and promise (myself) the next, to remember 31 October 1725, - it's about time to begin. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:10, 16 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

What happened on 17 October 1725? Hawkeye7 (discuss) 08:58, 16 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
17? - 31: Bach led the first performance of Gott der Herr ist Sonn und Schild, BWV 79. I wanted to begin expanding, but now someone died whose article I had wanted to write for years, Claus Peymann. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:16, 16 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunate that Gott der Herr ist Sonn und Schild, BWV 79 is only a GA and not an FA. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 20:43, 16 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
What do you think I meant by "it's about time to begin"? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:45, 16 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
A song by Imagine Dragons. It can take up to three months for an article to get through FAC, and WP:TFA/R is currently taking bids for September slots. So I would strongly recommend (1) nominating it asap; (2) rounding up the usual suspects for reviews to fast track the process; and asking the TFA coordinators to hold the bus (and don't let the pigeon drive the bus! Good luck! Hawkeye7 (discuss) 22:12, 16 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I know, but then - instead - someone dies and I am stuck with a major translation task. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:18, 16 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Three Ukrainian topics were on the main page today, at least at the beginning, RD and DYK, - see my talk. I hope to nominate later today. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:08, 20 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
On Bach's day of death, I decorated my user pages in memory of his music, and my story ends on "peace". --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:52, 28 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you today tor Harry Crerar, about "Canada's most senior field commander in the Second World War, who commanded the First Canadian Army in the campaign in North West Europe in 1944–1945."! - Thank you also for more featured content, and the source review for the cantata which made it possible to become FA! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 04:59, 28 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

CS1 error on Neil Armstrong

[edit]

Hello, I'm Qwerfjkl (bot). I have automatically detected that this edit performed by you, on the page Neil Armstrong, may have introduced referencing errors. They are as follows:

  • A bare URL and missing title error. References show this error when they do not have a title. Please edit the article to add the appropriate title parameter to the reference. (Fix | Ask for help)

Please check this page and fix the errors highlighted. If you think this is a false positive, you can report it to my operator. Thanks, Qwerfjkl (bot) (talk) 19:42, 29 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Good work on creating the above. I started pulling something together at User:Dumelow/List of Saint-Cyr classes in 2019 but never got around to finishing it. I'm happy to merge any additional info across if you think it worthwhile? - Dumelow (talk) 20:22, 3 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't edit other people's talk page comments just to convert spaces to non-breaking spaces

[edit]

This kind of thing (special:diff/1304750628) is unnecessary and unhelpful. If I wanted non-breaking spaces there I would put them there myself. –jacobolus (t) 00:13, 8 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't. It is an artefact of the software. See User talk:Cacycle/wikEd#Stop adding  . Hawkeye7 (discuss) 00:50, 8 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Then you need to stop using that software to edit talk pages. –jacobolus (t) 00:52, 8 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Why don't you remove the non-breaking spaces from your signature? Hawkeye7 (discuss) 01:57, 8 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Signatures says "The use of non-breaking spaces or <span class="nowrap"> to ensure that the signature displays on one line is recommended." But explicitly putting &nbsp; in the page markup is annoying for anyone reading the page source. –jacobolus (t) 02:23, 8 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Artist's conception of AREE on the surface of Venus, showing the wind turbine inside the rover's frame.

Automaton Rover for Extreme Environments (AREE) is a NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts project to design a rover that can operate in the environment of Venus, controlled by a wind-powered mechanical computer. Venus's atmosphere is about 90 times denser than Earth's and the surface temperature is at least 462 °C (864 °F), conditions which would prevent a standard electronic computer from operating for any significant period of time. While AREE is being designed for operation on Venus, the rover's design could be re-purposed for use on Mercury, which has a comparably high surface temperature, on Jovian moons Europa or Io, where high radiation makes use of traditional electronics difficult, or on lava flows or highly radioactive areas on Earth.

The project was first proposed in 2015, and funded by the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts program with a phase-I study in 2016, and a phase-II study from 2017 to 2018.

Buzz Aldrin's bootprint on the Moon

In July of 1969, Apollo 11 successfully fulfilled John F. Kennedy's goal of a person landing on, and returning from, the moon before the 1970s. Taking off on 16 July, the lunar lander, Eagle, touched down on the evening of the 20th (UTC). Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin exited the lander six hours later, becoming the first men on the moon. The pair stayed on the lunar surface for about 21 hours. This image is actually the second of a pair of images, taken by Aldrin so that the lunar surface's ability to bear weight could be measured.

DYK for Arthur J. Ruhlig

[edit]

On 12 August 2025, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Arthur J. Ruhlig, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Arthur J. Ruhlig was the first person to record observations of deuterium–tritium fusion? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Arthur J. Ruhlig. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Arthur J. Ruhlig), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Problems with AussieBot?

[edit]

Noticed on some recent edits by AussieBot marked as "Automated Stub rating" and "Automated Start" rating that it is also changing B-class assessments erroniously. Examples: [15] changes B1 from "No" to "Yes" (article is not sufficently referenced for a yes); [16] changes B2 from "Yes" to "No" (arguable if it's a Yes or not but a bot should not be changing this); [17] changes B2 from "Yes" to "No" (given the obscurity of the type "Yes" is likely appropriate, and in any event a bot should not be changing any of these). Given I checked three articles' edits and all three had this issue, I suspect it may be much more widespread than this. - The Bushranger One ping only 03:11, 18 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The Bot only changes the B class assessments for MilHist articles. I will investigate the B1 change; it should be checking to see if each paragraph is referenced and this looks wrong. B2 is based on AI. If you think an article deserves a B rating, you can submit it to Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/Requests. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 04:16, 18 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I see. The bot does not check the lead for references. So it was correct. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 04:28, 18 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm mostly concerned that it's changing manually-assessed Cs to Starts, and this is not correct - the article is not at all sufficiently referenced to have B1 ticked as 'yes'. - The Bushranger One ping only 07:30, 18 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The body of the article, meagre as it is, is indeed fully referenced. The problem is that the lead is not in the body. The bot is not overriding manual assessments, but choosing one where there are multiple, contradictory assessments. In the case of Dornier Do 29 (1934), there were three actually: C, Start and Stub. The Bot has gone with Stub. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 18:30, 18 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The body and lede of the article, given it's (functionally) a stub, are one and the same. And the problem with 'harmonizing' the assessments is that - if I recall - some WPs don't use C, so it's downgrading manually-assessed C's for MILHIST and turning them into Start. I don't think that's desirable. - The Bushranger One ping only 00:09, 19 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
All the WPs accept the C class rating as part of Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)/Archive 198#Project-independent quality assessments. This effort is aimed at cleaning up the contradictory assessments. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 02:31, 19 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Please see this edit at Talk:Ragnall mac Gofraid. One of the projects erroneously listed the article as List class and the bot overrode the other classifications. 12:39, 22 August 2025 (UTC) Ben MacDui 12:39, 22 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the bot guessed wrong in choosing the List class. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 20:12, 22 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2025 September newsletter

[edit]

The fourth round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 29 August. The penultimate round saw three contestants score more than 800 points:

Everyone who competed in Round 4 will advance to Round 5 unless they have withdrawn. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far, while the full scores for Round 4 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 9 featured articles, 12 featured lists, 98 good articles, 9 good topic articles, more than 150 reviews, nearly 100 did you know articles, and 18 in the news articles.

In advance of the fifth and final round, the judges would like to thank every contestant for their hard work. As a reminder, any content promoted after 29 August but before the start of Round 5 can be claimed in Round 5. In addition, note that Round 5 will end on 31 October at 23:59 UTC. Awards at the end of Round 5 will be distributed based on who has the most tournament points over all five rounds, and special awards will be distributed based on high performance in particular areas of content creation (e.g., most featured articles in a single round).

Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges – Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), Frostly (talk · contribs), Guerillero (talk · contribs) and Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs) – are reachable on their talk pages.
