Hi. This month The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There is over £3000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. Wikimedia UK is putting up £250 specifically for editors who produce the most quality new women bios for British women, with special consideration given to missing notable biographies from the Oxford Dictionary of Biography and Welsh Dictionary of Biography. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate independently this is also fine, but please add any articles created to the bottom of the main contest page even if not competing. Your participation in the contest and contributing articles on British women from your area or wherever would we much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Central Hill Estate, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Open House. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Citations needed

[edit]

You seem to have a particular interest in adding "citations needed" to numerous statements across several articles. While I agree that more reliable citations are (nearly) always welcome. The need to request tham is probably limited to contentious statements that might othwise be false. However at Holyhead you requested citations for the statement that South Stack on the other side of Holyhead Mountain and is open to the public. and The Anglesey section was financed through a Private Finance Initiative scheme. and The Welsh name, Caergybi, derives from the fortification around which the town developed. I would suggest that none of these statements are contentious and all probably easily sourced by a quick on-line search. Adding CN tags without good cause just causes work for others when it it is often easier simply to sort out the issue yourself. I notice that you have taken a similar approach at Tourism in Uttar Pradesh. This is especially odd when your user page asserts your interests include citation hunt? Is there an easy explanation that I am missing?  Velella  Velella Talk   16:52, 24 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ok that makes sense sorry! I'll endeavor to find them myself and tag only for contentious issues. thanks for pointing it out.~~~~ Rhagfyr (talk) 16:56, 24 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

I went to a local library in Islington, north London and tried to edit using the communal computers whilst logged into my account and it says the IP (I imagine a webhost) is blocked. I would both like to be able to to edit wikipedia here and also think it would be beneficial for other Wikimedians who may wish to edit at this location. I believe the IP address is 62.140.192.0/19

Decline reason:

The library appears to be using a webhost. You may request an IP block exemption by following the instructions at WP:IPECPROXY. 331dot (talk) 22:06, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Editing news 2023 #1

[edit]

Read this in another languageSubscription list for this newsletter

This newsletter includes two key updates about the Editing team's work:

  1. The Editing team will finish adding new features to the Talk pages project and deploy it.
  2. They are beginning a new project, Edit check.

Talk pages project

Screenshot showing the talk page design changes that are currently available as beta features at all Wikimedia wikis. These features include information about the number of people and comments within each discussion.
Some of the upcoming changes

The Editing team is nearly finished with this first phase of the Talk pages project. Nearly all new features are available now in the Beta Feature for Discussion tools.

It will show information about how active a discussion is, such as the date of the most recent comment. There will soon be a new "Add topic" button. You will be able to turn them off at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion. Please tell them what you think.

Daily edit completion rate by test group: DiscussionTools (test group) and MobileFrontend overlay (control group)

An A/B test for Discussion tools on the mobile site has finished. Editors were more successful with Discussion tools. The Editing team is enabling these features for all editors on the mobile site.

New Project: Edit Check

The Editing team is beginning a project to help new editors of Wikipedia. It will help people identify some problems before they click "Publish changes". The first tool will encourage people to add references when they add new content. Please watch that page for more information. You can join a conference call on 3 March 2023 to learn more.

Women in Red 8th Anniversary

[edit]
Women in Red 8th Anniversary
In July 2015 around 15.5% of the English Wikipedia's biographies were about women. As of July 2023, 19.61% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women. That's a lot of biographies created in the effort to close the gender gap. Happy 8th Anniversary! Hi Stuartyeates - only 4 of 11 sources are primary sources, the first source is DCMS (UK Government) and others include professional journals and newspapers, independent of the subject. 6 WP editors have contributed to this article. Therefore given these two factors, I believe there is a significant interest in it being published and sources prove to be notable. Any more suggestions?
