Caribbean artists
[edit]I just noticed your work on Caribbean artists, and I'm thrilled you're here and doing this work. Let me know if there's anything I can help you with. Guettarda (talk) 14:36, 30 April 2025 (UTC)
- Yahooo! thank you. Yes it's so fun, my current focus is Caribbean artists and also Black-British artists as there are too many holes in Wikipedia at the moment. I would love more biographical info re: Oscar Abrams and also I will create an article on his collaborator Norma Ashe-Watt soon. I appreciate all help and thank you so much for saying hello! Warm regards I&I22 (talk) 14:39, 30 April 2025 (UTC)
- Hello @Guettarda: -- I couldn't help noticing your comment, as I'm currently taking a look at this draft on British Caribbean producer Marc Mac by I&I22. I wonder if you might cast an eye? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Marc_Mac. Thank you! Medievalfran (talk) 07:58, 1 July 2025 (UTC)

- Thank you @Guettarda - much appreciated! Medievalfran (talk) 20:30, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Guettarda @Medievalfran thank you so much. I appreciate the assistance. This article is frustrating as the reviewers are claiming that the citations are insufficient. It is silly as this artist has entire chapters on his work and group in Electronic Dance Music reference books. I don't understand the resistance. He is also mentioned in Wikipedia often. I have added MORE citations...his cultural relevance is not really in doubt though. He should have been added a long time ago when Wikipedia started up, as his peers more into promos were. The DCWC is open!
[edit]
I&I22, for the second running of the Developing Countries WikiContest, it is now open for submissions. Welcome to the contest! You can now list your work at your submissions page to earn points. The coordinators have addressed some of the queries at the last contest and we are hopeful that it'll turn out great for you—yes, you! If you haven't done so already, please review the following:
- New to Wikipedia? Many experienced editors are part of this contest and willing to help; feel free to ask questions on the talk page.
- Got open nominations? List them at the review requests sidebar.
- Looking for a topic to work on? Check out suggested articles and eligible reviews. Remember, reviews now award 10 points!
- Not sure if your article qualifies? See the scoring rules for more information or contact a coordinator.
- Know someone else who might be interested? Sign-ups remain open throughout the contest, so don't hesitate to invite other editors!
On behalf of the coordinators, we hope you enjoy participating and wish you the best of luck! If you have any questions, please leave a message on the contest talk page or ask one of the coordinators: Arconning (talk · contribs), sawyer777 (talk · contribs), or TechnoSquirrel69 (talk · contribs). (To unsubscribe from these updates, remove yourself from this list.) Sent via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 03:52, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hey I&I22, and welcome to the contest again! Please make sure you're using your submissions page only to submit articles to the contest. The coordinators have a list where we review the changes made to all the participants' submissions pages, so it can be confusing if an edit pops up that isn't a submission. You can always use a page within your userspace to store helpful links or notes (for example, I have my own cheat sheet). Also, if you find the initalisms confusing, they're all expanded and linked in § Scores on the scoring page. Let me know if you have any questions! —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 08:21, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
- @TechnoSquirrel69 thank you sorry for the confusion! I&I22 (talk) 19:39, 4 July 2025 (UTC)

Theroadislong (talk) 21:06, 1 July 2025 (UTC)- @Theroadislong Yahoooo! Thank you and happy that Andrea Enisuoh's legacy will be protected and cherished.
- If you have any inspiration to help with another article I would appreciated any insights on my Draft: Marc Mac, which is driving me bonkers? Despite ample citations, books, newspaper articles the article has been declined over and over and he played a very important role in developing electronic music in British music culture, mentoring and producing artists and pioneering new musical genres and is a "godfather" of drum 'n bass who supported superstar Goldie in creating his signature sounds. Warm regards I&I22 (talk) 13:22, 2 July 2025 (UTC)

your DCWC submission (Marc Mac)
[edit]hey, i've removed your submission of Marc Mac as an FA, as it is not a WP:Featured article. featured articles have gone through a specific reviewing process (WP:Featured article candidates) and are promoted through consensus. currently Marc Mac is assessed at start-class. however, the article is eligible for WP:Did you know, which could be submitted for the contest. thank you and happy editing ... sawyer * any/all * talk 15:56, 3 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Sawyer777 hello! ooo I see. ok great, I will check that out! I&I22 (talk) 16:01, 3 July 2025 (UTC)
- I&I22, I would also take another skim through the contest scoring rules to make sure the subject of this article is within the scope of the DCWC. As stated in § General rules, submitted articles need to be "closely associated with or have a demonstrable significance to" one of the listed countries to be eligible. It appears that Mac — though from a Jamaican family — was born and raised in England and has contributed primarily to British music scenes. Unless I'm missing something, this would not meet the eligibility criteria for the contest. This is not to discourage you whatsoever! You've done a good job with this article, and I'm glad to see you've nominated it at Did you know?. If you'd like ideas for what you can work on for the contest, take a look at the suggested articles page. Let me know if you have any questions! —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 03:10, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- @TechnoSquirrel69 thank you for the encouragement and kinds words. I will look at the rules again. It is very important in the scope of equity diversity and inclusion anti-oppression work to acknowledge both of Marc Mac's nationalities and connections to Windrush history. Jungle and Drum 'n bass came about through the fusion of both cultures. I am of a similar mix though different Caribbean heritages. I might not be wording this correctly...In any case, Marc Mac's family was very active in Jamaica and brought that Jamaican community activism to British contexts. He did not lose his Jamaican-ness. And also Harlesden where his famil was based was very much a Caribbean context. His musical peers were also connected to Windrush/Caribbean history. This is a very important point to clear up as just because Caribbean folk emigrate to new countries and contexts they do not leave their original cultures behind. I look forward to discussing this issue with you further and thank you for the follow up. I&I22 (talk) 03:52, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Guettarda I welcome your input should you have any. Much thanks, I&I22 (talk) 03:57, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- @TechnoSquirrel69 Basically drum 'n bass arose in England BECAUSE of sound system culture which is PURELY JAMAICAN culture. It is Jamaica in England essentially. I am here on Wikipedia as a volunteer microactivist, filling the many holes that are missing and working to provide essential important cultural contribultions regarding BIPOC narratives. Authenticity and identity gatekeeping is rife and very problematic is colonised countries/economic narratives. Also, I would like to say that "developed" countries exist on a continuum. The "developed" countries also include "undeveloped" segments aka classist disparities. "Developed" countries, this is the hirearchical framing lingo of capitalist colonialism which prioritises material wealth and abusive exploitation over health and community. It is a very subjective term, although I understand how it is and has been used. Capitalists use this term of "development" to find moral ground to colonise new territories and exploit those countries' resources with capitalist reasoning and therefore escape criticism and costly fees aka less revenue. I&I22 (talk) 04:12, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- And so, in truth although I appreciate the spirit of this contest and understand our zeitgeist I have a terrible time with these term "developed" and "undeveloped" as they are a bit, well...discriminatory in my eyes. However, I am one person and my general aim is to level the Wikipedia encyclopaedic playing field with Wikipedia articles representing and honouring the underrepresented BIPOC contributions to cultures written by a BIPOC person who cares dearly about accessible archives. Now that ai is becoming such a feature of daily life, Wikipedia archiving and the languages used are even more influential. Hence my urgency to contribute what I can! I&I22 (talk) 04:28, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hey I&I22, like I mentioned above, there are many fields that have been historically underrepresented and could benefit from more editor attention, and I am not claiming that your work is any less worthwhile! However, the DCWC simply has different priorities in our collective effort to fight systemic bias. In the interest of fair play, the coordinators have to apply the scoring rules uniformly for everyone. We're also aware of the potentially problematic connotations of the label "developing" (and others), which was the subject of a few discussions last year — a few alternatives were proposed, which each had problems of their own, and we ultimately settled on this language as it was the clearest in communicating the scope of the contest (and/or the lesser of many evils, depending on how you look at it). By no means do we intend to perpetuate the impact of colonialism; we're actively fighting against it!On the topic of Marc Mac, I understand that his family, friends, and the music he works on have some degree of relation with Jamaican culture. However, I ask the same question about every submission we receive to determine its eligibility for points in the DCWC: does the article's text verifiably show it is "closely associated with or have a demonstrable significance to" a developing country. In other words, has Marc Mac, the person, had an impact or association with Jamaica, the country? I would be inclined to say no, but the final decision is made via a consensus of the three coordinators, so I'll ping Arconning and sawyer777 here if you'd like their input. As a side note, if you'd like to participate in a competition with broader acceptance criteria, consider signing up for next year's WikiCup, which is similar to the DCWC but covers all encyclopedic topics! —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 05:56, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- @TechnoSquirrel69 thank you so much and it is good to know that the terms "developed" and "undeveloped" were questioned by you and your peers. For sure the impact Marc Mac had affected Jamaican culture in Jamaica and the diaspora. There are so many people missing in Wikipedia so can also find others who are more obvious choices to suggest. Thank you for the WikiCup information, I will check that out too, very cool. So happy all this righting of history work is being done. Warm regards I&I22 (talk) 11:04, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- For now I'm more inclined to say the article would not apply though considering Mac has had some impact on Jamaican culture, I feel like related information highlighting his impact needs to be added to the article first before being eligible for the contest itself. Arconning (talk) 14:05, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Arconning thank you, part of Marc Mac's legacy by pioneering new musical sounds was that he created new opportunities for new identities and ways of being "Black" to be fostered. Through sound he created new "liminal zones" and spaces for new ways of being and interacting, new ways of being Jamaican, new ways of being British, new ways of being Black, new ways of being Black-British. WIth his engineering background and inventions of new sounds and musical genres he created new economies. He definitely deserves more recognition from both England and Jamaica, but obviously he must not be into self-promo that much, at least not as much as his contemporaries are. The 90s raves were inclusive and not segregated, very incredible. His family was involved in community organsiing and advocating in both Jamaica and England. In my mind this guy deserves a Nobel Peace Prize as the music he created and the musicians he mentored brought on a whole peacful hopeful joyous youth movement, new economies, new soundscapes, new identities. It's quite incredible really. Anyways, not sure I am completely answering your question... to provide the connections in Jamaica would take me oodles of research time in the internet archives. I will think on it and also can consider other options to submit as there are many many many more. warmest regards I&I22 (talk) 14:26, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
