Doc page

[edit]

@Zackmann08, WikiOriginal-9, and Dissident93: just a heads-up, the guidance and information at {{Infobox NFL biography/doc}} doesn't appear to have been meaningfully merged into the gridiron football doc page yet, and it seems like something that should be done at some point. Left guide (talk) 01:44, 10 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note.. That is definitely on the todo list. Any help would be greatly appreciated though! — Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 03:03, 10 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Dissident93 once you feel the template is in a good stable form, lets make sure we tackle the documentation. —Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 03:04, 10 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, that's the plan. — Dissident93 (talk) 03:19, 10 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
 Done I updated the doc page. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 19:06, 11 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Birth_name

[edit]

Dissident93 there are currently at least 3 pages using |birth_name=: Bob Kercher, Isaac Parks & John Saban. Just because the NFL Infobox didn’t use it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be used… It is present on {{Infobox person}} as well as {{Infobox baseball biography}} so there is precedent. There is absolutely no reason not to include it.— Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 01:59, 11 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'm aware other infoboxes feature it, but I'm fairly sure there have been previous attempts to get something like this added to the NFL infobox and it failed consensus. That or nobody cared of its existence in the first place. If it is to return, then it should usable on all pages. — Dissident93 (talk) 02:10, 11 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
So we currently have cases where it is being used. It is far from complicated to add… I fail to see what the issue is? It doesn’t clutter the template or cause any issues so why are you so against adding it. — Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 02:12, 11 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Seems like something that should require more discussion to keep, as the old NFL infobox didn't use it. I'm not personally against it for the record. — Dissident93 (talk) 02:15, 11 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You should remember that this isn’t just about the old NFL template. There were 3 templates that were merged… Based on your logic EVERY change you have made should require more discussion. You have removed numerous parameters from the template because you don’t think they are necessary without ANY discussion. So your logic really makes zero sense. — Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 02:25, 11 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Consensus from the original discussion was to merge CFL parameters into the NFL one. |birth_name= was also not used in the CFL infobox, so where is this even coming from? Again, I don't personally oppose it but there should be additional support for something that both of the intended infoboxes lacked. — Dissident93 (talk) 02:47, 11 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I can tell, it was not a supported parameter on those pages before the merge. I don't feel it's a "key fact" referred to by MOS:INFOBOXPURPOSE:

The less information that an infobox contains, the more effectively it serves its purpose, allowing readers to identify key facts at a glance.

playing_team1, coaching_team1

[edit]

This merge is pretty much done now. Category:Pages using infobox gridiron football biography with unknown parameters is empty. The last thing to do is convert playing_team1, coaching_team1, etc. to |pastteams=, |pastcoaching=, etc. Thoughts? Take a look at the career history sections at Vernon Adams (playing_team1) and Trevor Harris (pastteams) to see what I mean. Note that I already converted Harris manually in the past. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 16:58, 23 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Always nice to see unknown parameter tracking cats empty. Is there any way to have a bot change the format or is that impractical since it involves parameter and formatting changes? — Dissident93 (talk) 23:42, 23 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hopefully a bot can do it. It would take forever manually. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 00:33, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose it's possible to force playing_team1 to be formatted like the pastteams bulleted list if that isn't feasible. — Dissident93 (talk) 01:19, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Do you know if that would also work for team2, 3, 4, etc? ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 01:22, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If it can be done for team1 then it can be done for any of them. — Dissident93 (talk) 01:37, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds like a great idea. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 01:41, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Do we know if any article actually uses team15+? I'm sure some go beyond 10 but I can't see any close to 20 unless there's a Tom Moore type of coach in the CFL. — Dissident93 (talk) 01:55, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Anything is possible. Shawn Lemon had 19 teams before I converted them. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 01:58, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm assuming that's close to a record like Josh Johnson? Anyway, Vernon Adams has the PS/offseason asterisk misplayed on his article, how often have you came across that? — Dissident93 (talk) 02:09, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I come across those sometimes, but not too often. I just fix them when I see them. I wouldn't really worry about those. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 02:13, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The formatting should match now, but there could be bugs since it was done in a hacky way. The (HC) on Russ Jackson is hardcoded to the |coaching_team1= parameter so I'm not sure how to handle that. — Dissident93 (talk) 02:37, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Asterisk at Vernon Adams displaying in different spot than source code. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 02:39, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It shows again but since the * is hardcoded into the parameter, it needs some sort of switch logic to flip it from *) to )* unless I'm overthinking this. — Dissident93 (talk) 03:12, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The PS note isn't even displaying. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 03:28, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I reverted back to the one that worked. I tried messing around in the sandbox but can't figure it out. There might be a super complicated way of doing it though... ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 04:27, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That was a great effort though. It was really close. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 16:46, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

What exactly was the issue? It should still be possible to force the * to be rendered outside of the bracket using switch logic. I'll take another look later this week when I have more time. — Dissident93 (talk) 01:57, 25 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Because most of the CFL source code has the asterisk by the team parameter "2022-2023 BC Lions*", not the year parameter.
However, with the changes, it was now rendering as "BC Lions* (2022-2023)" and the PS note was not displaying for those cases as well.
The (2019*) is a minority of cases. Like I said above, most CFL articles aren't like that. "I come across those sometimes, but not too often. I just fix them when I see them. I wouldn't really worry about those." ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 02:08, 25 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, that's easily fixed. *) and jobs titles not formatting properly was the issue I was trying to work out. — Dissident93 (talk) 23:58, 27 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Infobox person has an RfC for possible consensus regarding the removal of color from person infoboxes. A discussion is taking place. If you would like to participate in the discussion, you are invited to add your comments on the discussion page. Thank you. — Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:30, 2 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
