Raiyappa Mahar[1][failed verification] (1645 or 1655 - 1689) was a warrior and personal bodygaurd of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the second ruler of the Maratha Empire. He is renowned for his attempt to rescue the king after his capture by Mughal forces. Disguised as a commoner, Raiyappa infiltrated the Mughal camp in a effort to liberate Sambhaji, sacrificing his life in the process.
Early life and background
[edit]Raiyappa Mahar was born in the Deccan region during the 17th century, within the socio-political framework of the Maratha Empire. He belonged to the Mahar community, which historically held roles related to military support, village administration, and manual labor under various Deccan Sultanates and later the Maratha state.[2][better source needed]
Many Mahars served as foot soldiers, scouts, messengers, and fort guards. In the Maratha military structure, individuals from non-landed backgrounds could attain roles based on loyalty, martial skill, and physical endurance, and Raiyappa is believed to have entered the service through this route.
Raiyappa served in close proximity to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, as part of the royal escort or Personnel bodygaurd. His role have included duties such as protecting the ruler’s person, accompanying the royal convoy, and acting on special orders.
Association with the royal household would have placed Raiyappa within the operational radius of high-level decision-making, especially during periods of war with the Mughal Empire and during Emergencies.
Attempt to rescue Sambhaji
[edit]In 1689, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was captured near Sangameshwar by Mughal forces led by Muqarrab Khan, acting under orders from Emperor Aurangzeb. Sambhaji and his close advisor Kavi Kalash were imprisoned and later publicly executed.
Raiyappa Mahar with a small army attempted to intervene during this time. He disguised himself as a bhishti (water carrier) and entered the Mughal camp, with the intent of reaching the king or disrupting the proceedings of his execution.[3][better source needed]
He engaged in direct confrontation with Mughal soldiers inside the camp. Raiyappa was ultimately killed before he could accomplish his objective to save Sambhaji from execution by the Mughal.[4]
Legacy
[edit]Raiyappa Mahar’s story is primarily preserved in oral histories and localized retellings, particularly within the Mahar community in Maharashtra.
