Unofficial peer review of something I wrote.. again

[edit]

I'm annoying, I know. Hope you like it at Virginia Tech, I've heard it's a good school.
Any chance you could find the time to take a quick glance at USCGC Dione and give me some thoughts? I'm going to give it a thorough read-through this weekend and make sure my sources and info isn't all jumbled up, hopefully learning from my mistakes (cough cough Dixie Arrow cough cough), aha—but I think a set of eyes like yours would be beneficial.
Feel free to take your time, I'm in no rush. Pretty busy myself at the moment, probably will hold off on submitting for GA review until I've rigorously gone through it myself and made sure everything is right. Best of luck at VT! PhoenixCaelestis (Talk · Contributions) 19:55, 25 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello PhoenixCaelestis,
It is great to hear from you! Thank you for the kind words, I write this as I wait for a class to start.
I'll certainly help out, as this gives me a reason to procrastinate :) . Since I recently got an article rated as A-class and another which I hope would reach FA, do you have any greater plans for the article? I can certainly help with improving the article even more.
Good luck with the next school year! Virginia is pretty chill (literally. I'm cold). GGOTCC 20:00, 25 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I might shoot for FA in the future with this one, since I think she had an interesting career and all, but I definitely want to get a few different articles in GA space beforehand. Dixie Arrow was a rough start to writing higher-level articles and I guess I just want more practice in that regard. With the aforementioned article, I thought I was ready and ended up wanting to bash my head against a wall and quit multiple times during the week-long review.. ugh.
If you'd be up to trying to give help for making the article FA status, I'd take it, just so it would pass GA quicker (and maybe get through FA if I ever get there). Just try not to be absolutely soul-crushing with it, haha. PhoenixCaelestis (Talk · Contributions) 20:13, 25 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Not crush your soul? Aww man...
In all seriousness, I am sorry that you felt that way with Dixie Arrow. I also must apologize if there was anything I did to discourage you, as that was not my goal. My first GA article, USS Gyatt, passed this March. I had already written ~40 articles, going back to 2021. Since March, I've written another 9 GAs. Encyclopedic and technical writing is a learned skill that slowly develops. As a personal example, my last assignment in high school English class was to review and analyze old pieces of my writing. Naturally, I examined old Wikipedia articles I created, and was surprised to see how advanced and well-refined my writing style became without me noticing over the course of a year. All you need is a little practice and experience, that's all!
One thing I recommend is to do a GA review yourself. Just find a short article to review and figure out what works and what does not. This is what I did to improve Gyatt so much. I just rewrote USS Savannah (1842) and I believe it is GA quality. Since both articles have a similar-ish style, feel free to be as mean as you want when you think about what works and what does not work with Savannah (although I am not telling you to do a GA review).
USCGC Jackson was my first ever Wikipedia page/edit, and I have a solid background with the Coast Guard during the era. Currently, I'll probably focus on expanding some pieces of information while improving the prose. If you think I am being stupid, feel free to revert me. I have some ideas to improve the article, but I will save them to myself for now.
Does my little pep-talk help? Let's take this slow and try to not get burned out.
Cheers,
GGOTCC 21:45, 25 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe.. disappointing or surprising would have been a better term than “soul-crushing.” Not what I exactly expected.
I’d love to review a page for GA but I’m just worried I don’t have enough experience to do one.. hopefully I can do one in the near future, once I’ve done Dione. PhoenixCaelestis (Talk · Contributions) 22:34, 25 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You do not need experience to do a GA review! How do you think this got started? If you would like, you can 'review' any of my articles, I don't mind!
Also, have you checked out this book yet? GGOTCC 22:44, 25 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
IVE GOT GREAT NEWS!
I just realized that I am in college, and that VT has original engineering journals about her design! I'll go hunt the books down now! GGOTCC 22:50, 25 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yes, that's incredible - thank you. Please keep me updated. And yes I have found the book you linked, even cited it in the design segment.
I'll consider doing a GA review, though probably not until mid-November. I'm quite busy until then. PhoenixCaelestis (Talk · Contributions) 23:18, 25 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I got the book! It took a while since it was in library storage and I had to make a request for it.
As expected, it is a great source regarding the class's design, specifications, and layout. Since the book is in public domain, I am free to share the contents. Would you also like to get a copy of the 5-page article + plans? I could try and host scans of the pages on Wikisource or just send it to you directly. GGOTCC 14:40, 28 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
My email is attached on the sidebar on my profile, feel free to send it to me. You can also upload it to Wikisource, which I think would be useful for future work. This weekend I can get the images uploaded to the article, unless you beat me to it. PhoenixCaelestis (Talk · Contributions) 15:18, 28 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'll send the images to you first then try and upload them directly to Wikisource. GGOTCC 15:19, 28 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. I also found a picture of Dione (in public domain) of her before launching, so I'm presently uploading that. PhoenixCaelestis (Talk · Contributions) 15:25, 28 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Are you able to view the pages from the latest email I sent? Apologies for the several messages at once. GGOTCC 15:34, 28 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'll have to check in a few hours, sorry. I'll try to let you know around 4-5 PM tonight. PhoenixCaelestis (Talk · Contributions) 15:36, 28 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
And if not then, then absolutely tomorrow. PhoenixCaelestis (Talk · Contributions) 15:36, 28 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@GGOTCC I’ve got it! PhoenixCaelestis (Talk · Contributions) 17:59, 28 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That's great! I hope you enjoy. I'll also edit some of the info in as well. GGOTCC 20:35, 28 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
ALSO: You know how you have cited the Transactions of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers for the source of the ship's plans? Well, I just got membership! Would you also like me to send you the original journal articles as well? GGOTCC 01:27, 5 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sure! PhoenixCaelestis (Talk · Contributions) 01:54, 5 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@PhoenixCaelestis Sorry for the lack of communications. Apparently, SNAME's web collection cuts off at 1954, so I sent an email asking about it. I have not heard back since an initial reply sending it to someone else. All else fails, I'd just put a request in with VT for our copy. GGOTCC 19:04, 18 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's alright, I'm in no rush haha. PhoenixCaelestis (Talk · Contributions) 19:26, 18 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, never mind. I thought emailing you would allow me to attach images in Gmail, but apparently not. I'll just go with the Wikisource option. Do you know if I could send you images directly? I have never sent an email via Wikipedia before. GGOTCC 15:26, 28 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hey man! I just wrote a draft of the page of 'Sibabalwe Gobe Gysman' and you declined it. I would love some help on this draft to ensure that it does not get declined again. Inputcube (talk) 11:49, 27 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Inputcube Hello, and thank you for the question!
The main issue is that most of the article is uncited. Since you are writing about a living person, each claim needs to be supported by a citation. For instance, there are no citations under "Early life and education", "Artistic philosophy" and many other sentences. GGOTCC 20:01, 27 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Asking for Review

[edit]

Hey, I came across the rejected draft for Dennis Consorte, and saw your feedback on it. I did my best to find citations, source the information, trim out what sounds promotional and sourced everything.and have resubmitted it. All the citations comply with the Wikipedia Notability Guidlines and I would love if you could review it and let me know,

Thanks in Advance Man! Love your work ChronoTexts (talk) 06:04, 2 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@ChronoTexts Hello, and thank you for your interest in editing Wikipedia!
Well done, the draft looks a lot better! The reason why I had to reject the article is because every fact in an article about a living person needs to be directly cited to avoid accusations of slander/fabrication. I can review it when classes end!
Thank you, and happy editing! GGOTCC 16:31, 2 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@GGOTCC Yes I get it. I did everything you had asked for, and cited every content, removed fabricated content. However an admin denied the submission and added a few more tags, Can you go over them? As per my expertise and veiws, it is written in a NPOV and the citations are independent.
Thanks! ChronoTexts (talk) 17:45, 2 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Major request

[edit]

Hello @GGOTCC!
USCGC Dione recently passed GA, and I have high hopes for the article in the future. I've noticed a glaring problem the article has at the moment. I've realized I don't page numbers when citing Hickam's Torpedo Junction. I'm a bit busy at the moment between a major assignment and marching band, and I know you're constantly at class and such.
However, is any chance that you would be willing to use the internet archive link and add page numbers for Torpedo Junction (similar to what you did for the Donald Canney book)? The next time I'll probably be able to get to it will be winter break (in late December). If you're too busy or don't want to do it, I absolutely understand. I just.. I dunno, it feels a bit against Wikipedia's collaborative goals to pretty much write this article by myself.
Thank you for all of your help! PhoenixCaelestis (Talk · Contributions) 12:04, 3 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, @PhoenixCaelestis!
Congrats on your second GA, it's great to see you improve! I'll certainly add it to my list, but I have been a bit busy with school and the psychological burden of living in Virginia. I still have not heard back from SNAME, but I'll do a pass over the article soon. Are you thinking of A-class as your next step? While it is more intense, the A-class process is much longer, meaning there is less time restraints for corrections. To be fair, almost all GA and FA articles have been written by one person and touched up by others. There is nothing wrong with what you are doing!
Speaking of marching bands...have you considered joining the The Marching Virginians? :)
Happy writing! GGOTCC 22:51, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Idiot me went ahead and did the pages by myself just because I couldn't stand not having them, but now I've got to fix stuff with the commercial service section and.. I even emailed the USCG's historical office to see if they had cohesive information on her 1943-1944 service (which I'd assume was the same as her pre-war service, but I can't stand not knowing).. good lord. A-class is a good recommendation, I kinda forgot it existed and was going to go straight to FA. Silly me.
Thank you for the Marching Virginians recommendation, though I probably won't stick with marching band after high school - it's too time consuming and makes me miss out on other stuff I wanna do. PhoenixCaelestis (Talk · Contributions) 23:11, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, we all run into similar situations like that! Is there anything you feel is missing? Several years of service could easily be summed up in a sentence, ie. "continued to conduct patrols along the east coast for the next two years" and still be sufficient for FA. Also, since I did not get a response from SNAME yet, I'll just put in a request for the physical copies on everything about the Thetis-class design. I'll have everything by the end of this week...ideally.
Please tell me if the Coast Guard gets back to you! I have seen a USCG document a bunch of times that lists the position/stations of most Coast Guard ships going back a century. I forget the name, but do you know what I am talking about? It is on HathiTrust. GGOTCC 23:23, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for trying to get through to SNAME, sorry you haven't heard back. Hopefully the design info comes through. I've never heard of HathiTrust, but I will certainly go check it out. Hopefully I find some new information I didn't know before! And I absolutely will let you know if the Coast Guard replies, hopefully the recent shutdown doesn't mess with anything there. PhoenixCaelestis (Talk · Contributions) 23:34, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Found it! This is what I was talking about: https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/101663563
I'm unsure how the Coast Guard works, but the Navy's history command consists of civilian researchers, so I am unsure if they can get back to you soon. GGOTCC 23:45, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
710 pages is a lot.. thank God there's a search feature LOL. PhoenixCaelestis (Talk · Contributions) 23:57, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hey @GGOTCC, I have (an) additional question(s). Do you know if there are limits on primary sources in higher-rated articles and what they can be used for? WP:NOR says that they must be "descriptive statements of facts" and they must be reliably published. WP:MoS/MilHis says that the "use of high-quality primary sources is also appropriate, but care should be taken to use them correctly, without straying into original research."
I'm a little worried considering a large portion of the article is using primary sources, and concerned that the commercial service segment strays into the vein of OR. Are these concerns valid or am I overreacting? PhoenixCaelestis (Talk · Contributions) 15:33, 6 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@PhoenixCaelestis Hi Phoenix!
Apologies for the delay; that is a very good question that I frankly had a hard time articulating a response to because of how smooth my brain is. After thinking about it for a week(?!) and talking to a professor, this is my response:
There is no hard limit because every article is different in topic and length. The limits on primary sources for the A and FA requirements are meant to articulate a general rule in academic (enclopidic) writing to not rely on primary or original sources too much. This is a very hard to define line and is often up to an experienced writer to know when to stop.
In our case, it will be fine to cite original documents if it is published from a trustworthy source. For an example, an FAA report on what caused a plane crash is an original document, but is trustworthy due to the amount of review and fact-checking that goes into it. The word choice of "Reliably published" is meant to rule out citing documents that are impossible for anyone else access (ie. your grandfather's watch) or someone's blog.
You have more freedom with "descriptive statements of facts" if that primary document agrees with other things you have read. Again, take USS Savannah (1842). In the "American Civil War" section, I cite "Official records of the Union and Confederate navies in the war of the Rebellion" which is an unedited compilation of letters published by the Navy. I reference a letter from Savannah 's captain that discusses the capture of E. J. Waterman. Several other sources mention that Savannah captured E. J. Waterman, but the letters are the most detailed on the subject and add important context. Here, this is fine as the original documents constitute one citation and contain information collaborated by other sources while adding something substancial. This is what "using them correctly" means in reference to primary documents.
Your concerns are understandable, even though I may disagree with you. You get into original research when you string together primary documents and try to present a thesis or greater picture. On Wikipedia, (well written) articles should only state "A caused B" only if a reference says "A caused B." This is why it's fine to cite Merchant Vessels of the United States about the name changes because the text directly describes the changes. It would be original research to cite a document that mentions a vessel named "Delta I" that lacks evidence this is the same vessel. I rejected a AfC that, among many problems, cited a news story because it mentioned someone with the same name with no evidence that it was the same person. The same idea applies here.
Another point of the FA requirements is that articles should cite the best sources on the topic that the writer can access. This is why articles on British dreadnoughts cite respectable books and academic sources rather than blogs or random websites. The "best avaible sources" also vary by topic. I have seen an FA about a missing island in California rely heavily on 100 year old newspaper clippings because they were the best sources avaible. You are in a similar boat trying to track Dione when she drops off the map because almost nothing would mention her in merchant service. The issue you may face is if the primary sources you cite are reliable, such as the ship trackers or seemingly self-published websites.
The reason why this response is so complex is because this is essentially a Master's Degree level question. You are clearly a talented writer, and I do not want to hold the complexity back because you clearly have the potential to live up to it.
Is there anything you are concerned about the most? I apologize if this monolog is hard to understand, I just wanted to try and cover the intent of all the guidelines.
Does this make sense? I am here if you would like more help! GGOTCC 04:05, 14 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for this @GGOTCC. I’ve spent my spare time looking through recent A and FA ratings on warships from then time to see what the sort of things they bring up are, and then got really worried when I noticed they all cited like 10 books and I really only have one.. haha.
I think you’ve alleviated my concerns, at least for now. Do you mind taking a quick look through my sources and see if anything is cited to a super dubious/unreliable source? If so I’ll try and find another source to co-confirm. PhoenixCaelestis (Talk · Contributions) 10:41, 14 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That is great to hear! You certainly cite more books than just Torpedo Junction, and what is most important is you cite the best avaible. The references I see being an issue are Marine Title, NavSource, and U-boat.net (self published websites without oversight). U-boat.net is user-sourced information, and I have seen its reliability questioned here on Wikipedia before. The good thing is that all of the information should be found in the books it cites or something else on Archive.org. GGOTCC 15:01, 14 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think I've been able to address three of these concerns now. Let me know if you see anything else. PhoenixCaelestis (Talk · Contributions) 15:43, 14 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Happy editing! I have high hopes. GGOTCC 16:51, 14 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@GGOTCC won't be on Discord for a while but still wanted to lyk - Source 8 in USCGC Dione, the article titled United States Coast Guard Patrol Boats" from Marine Engineering and Shipping Age, has no page number or link in the citation. One of these would be nice.. PhoenixCaelestis (Talk · Contributions) 13:11, 24 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@PhoenixCaelestis Oops, thanks! I'll fix it after class. GGOTCC 13:49, 24 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Done! GGOTCC 16:16, 24 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Asking for a look-over

[edit]

Hi,

I just added some more information to this draft for CG5 and now I want to resubmit it, but I want your feedback first. I added a source from a publisher for The Republican, which is MassLive, and a source from Music Week, which is a magazine, and there is already a source that someone added for the Houston Chronicle. This might be good enough to resubmit, but if you are able to, please give any feedback or advice.

Thank you,

Jibblesnark86 (talk) 18:44, 3 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and thank you for your interest in building Wikipedia!
The draft is certainly looking better, but I am confused on a few parts. While those sources are very good, many parts of the article are still uncited. On Wikipedia, every article on a living person needs to have every fact supported by an in-line citation to avoid accusations of slander/falsification. You can read more at Wikipedia:Biographies of living people. Right now, many of the stand-alone sentences under 'Career' lack citations. This is a reason why the article will likely be rejected again if you submit it in the current state.
You also cite several YouTube videos, which is not considered a reliable source as anyone can make a video that says anything. This does not apply to sources such as Music Week and The Republican as these are sources with an established process of publishing and checking work. Does this help answer your question? GGOTCC 23:27, 3 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that answers it completely. Thank you very much for the advice. I'm gonna keep scavenging for citations for some of this stuff, and hopefully it'll turn out even better. Thank you again!
Best,

Question from Antonina Bartczak (12:40, 4 October 2025)

[edit]

I made a new site about Marie Skłodowska Curie and it's named "User:Antonina Bartczak/sandbox". How to change it to Marie Skłodowska Curie? --Antonina Bartczak (talk) 12:40, 4 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Antonina Bartczak Hello, and thank you for your interest in editing Wikipedia!
Generally, there are a few options. One, you can copy the section of the sandbox you want and paste it into the article. This is favored when an article already exists under the name. In other cases, you can "move" your sandbox to make it an article. There should be a blue "move" button somewhere on the right side of your screen. Wikipedia:Moving a page has more information on this.
In your case, there has been considerable debate over what name Curie's article should be under. Discussions about each article occur on the talk page, which is the tab labeled "talk" right over the article name. In your case, you may want to see Talk:Marie Curie as others have brought the same idea up. As of now, the article favors Marie Curie as that is her common (most used) name in English. [edit]

Hi GGOTCC, I’m just getting started and I want to make sure I’m on the right track. Do you have any simple tips for writing a good article? Like how to start it, what to include, or things to avoid? I'd really appreciate any advice! --Vrushali07 (talk) 14:25, 8 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and welcome!
That is a very good question. There are some tutorials on Wikipedia about that, such as Help:Getting started or Help:My first article which can help get new users situated.
In my opinion, the best things to know is that your first article does not need to be perfect. It may also pay off to see what other articles do and copy the format. Any article in this list are all very well written, and you can easily find one related to your topic. Instead of writing the article directly, it may also be helpful to create it as a draft first. Compared to an article, a draft would not appear in searches and would allow you to slowly build an article despite the mess. A draft starts with the word draft, so if your topic is "Watermellons", then the draft page would be Draft:Watermellons .
Once you have a draft, it is recommended for new users to submit it to Articles for Creation for someone to review and leave feedback/pass the article.
Does this make sense? We are glad to have you!

Question from Random Dyke (20:22, 9 October 2025)

[edit]

Hi! you seem cool as hell. I happen to really enjoy naval history, and have read pages you've written before, which feels really cool. I've been meaning to make an account and do edits for years and I finally sat down to do it. I have a few questions. 1. if I am writing a new article (without a citation format to default to) is there a recommended choice? 2. If I am unsure as to whether something should be edited (I don't like the wording/feel it could be written better, etc.) should I just edit it or leave it alone if it's fine? --Random Dyke (talk) 20:22, 9 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Random Dyke Hello, and thank you very much for the praise, I am TRULEY honored!
First off, welcome to Wikipedia! We are glad you are here.
Those are all very good questions, and I'll break my response into bulletpoints:
  • Since Wikipedia has a global scope in content and readership, many citation styles are allowed and it really comes down to personal preferance. The only relevant guideline is to keep citations styles consistent in the same article. Wikipedia:Citing sources has more details on how to cite, but the easiest method to me is clicking on the "Reference" button on the upper right side of your screen and filling in the prompts. If you find some other way you like more, then do it!
  • The great thing is that you invited to WP:BE BOLD! If you see something that is wrong/off, you are free to make changes as you see fit! You are not forced to do/not do something on Wikipedia. However, if you find something that seems off, but you are unsure if/how to change it, then you could ask on the article's talk page. A talk page is a forum to discuss the content; you are on my talk page right now. Every article will have a talk page associated on it. If you are using a computer, you can click on the "talk" page located right above the article title. You can also ask questions about anything at Wikipedia:Teahouse or my userpage. Wikipedia also contains Wikiprojects, which are for users with a shared interest. If you are interested in naval history, we have Wikipedia:Wikiproject Ships and Wikipedia:Wikiproject Military History where you may also ask questions, need be.
Does this make sense? Happy editing! GGOTCC 21:11, 9 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

hey, so i'm new to editing on wikipedia (i've been on fandom for a while), but i don't know where to start, do you have some tips? --UnVerseHi (talk) 11:01, 10 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and welcome! We are glad to have you.
There are some tutorials, such as Help:Getting started and Help:Editing, that you may find useful in understanding how Wikipedia works. If you want to jump right in, then you can practice in your sanbox (User:UnVerseHi/Sandbox) which is a place for experimentation. You can also start editing articles directly, such as articles that need copyediting here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/How to. Just scroll to the bottom and press the blue button!
If you are on Android, you can also use the Recomended Edits option.
Does this help answer your question?
Happy editing! GGOTCC 18:24, 11 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from PrussianAstrologist (18:18, 11 October 2025)

[edit]

Hello, I want to create a new article, how do I do that? --PrussianAstrologist (talk) 18:18, 11 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and welcome!
That is a very good question. There are some tutorials on Wikipedia about that, such as Help:Getting started or Help:My first article which can help get new users situated.
Feel free to ask me any more questions! GGOTCC 18:20, 11 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for USS Missouri (1841)

[edit]

On 12 October 2025, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article USS Missouri (1841), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the only casualty of USS Missouri's destruction (pictured) was a pet bear? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/USS Missouri (1841). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, USS Missouri (1841)), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to nominate it.

Hook update
Your hook reached 24,794 views (1,033.1 per hour), making it one of the most viewed hooks of October 2025 – nice work!

Hello, and welcome!
You may want to read Help:my first article first. You can create a draft with the article's name, such as Draft:Name of thing to keep the text in. You can then submit the article to WP:Articles for creation for someone to review and provide feedback on (and hopefully publish!)

Question from Jlmcc94303 (05:52, 20 October 2025)

[edit]

I have created this account to understand more about the payment of content creators for editing Wikipedia Pages. Apparently there are paid content creators who edit Wikipedia pages of individuals for a fee. I find this antithetical to the spirit of Wikipedia and the stated claim that Wikipedia is edited only by volunteers. As a financial supporter of Wikimedia Foundation, I've received emails stating that Wikipedia content is created only by volunteers. This, however, contradicts my experience: I have received on the order of 10 proposals from people asking me to pay them to update the Wikipedia page about myself. Such a page does exist, and I don't know who created it, but it is out of date, incomplete, and lacking in substantiating citations.

Wikipedia understandably does not allow individuals to create or edit their own pages. That makes good sense, avoiding flagrant self promotion. But letting me pay someone to promote me doesn't seem like the solution. I understand that the people who have offered to help would adhere to Wikipedia policies, which is of course a good idea, but there's still a pay to play aspect of this. I have enough money to be able to pay the amounts those who have approached me have asked me to pay, but many other worthy individuals may not have as much money as I have.

I would be interested in knowing if Wikipedia sets priorities and has a way of encouraging volunteers to create and edit entries to ensure that priority topics are covered, based on objective measures. For a scientist, for example, this could be based on citations of an individual's scientific output. Is there an article or policy specifically about policies related to paying people to create and edit pages paid for by the subject of the page? --Jlmcc94303 (talk) 05:52, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - you might be interested in WP:SCAM. Anerdw (talk) 05:55, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jlmcc94303 Hello! it is 2 AM where I am and I am about to go to bed. I will give you a better much response tomorrow after a test, but know:
1) I am a volunteer user with no influence over Wikipedia or Wikimedia
2) Those are 100% scams and PLEASE DO NOT GIVE THEM MONEY!
3) No legitimate user will ask for money. everything is done for free.
4) have people been claiming to be me (GGOTCC)? I have never offered my services on Wikipedia in exchange for money GGOTCC 06:10, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jlmcc94303 Hello again! Here is my full response since my test got postponed:
  • I have created this account to understand more about the payment of content creators for editing Wikipedia Pages. Apparently there are paid content creators who edit Wikipedia pages of individuals for a fee. I find this antithetical to the spirit of Wikipedia and the stated claim that Wikipedia is edited only by volunteers.
Paid editors do exist, and while some follow the ethical guidelines of disclosing their employer and customer, many do not. I very much agree with you, but paid editing is going to occur regardless. The act is not banned, as we want paid editors to be open about their motives. However, paid editors who attempt to trick others or who hide their payment are banned regularly. You are correct that Wikipedia is run by volunteers. Your donations to the Wikimedia Foundation help pay for things such as keeping the servers running, conducting outreach, and staffing the legal office. Everything on the English Wikipedia is done by volunteers for free. Administrators, reviewers, editors, etc do not ask for money.
  • This, however, contradicts my experience: I have received on the order of 10 proposals from people asking me to pay them to update the Wikipedia page about myself. Such a page does exist, and I don't know who created it, but it is out of date, incomplete, and lacking in substantiating citations.
This is not an uncommon experience. A hallmark of a Wikipedia scam is proposing both the problem and solution unrequested. Many groups like to target professors or other people with your background. Please, do not give them money. If you want, I can update your page for you.
  • Wikipedia understandably does not allow individuals to create or edit their own pages. That makes good sense, avoiding flagrant self promotion.
It is not a banned practice, but is discouraged for that reason. It is not banned because we don't want to give an opportunity for scammers to exploit or accuse anonymous editors of editing their own page without reason.
  • I understand that the people who have offered to help would adhere to Wikipedia policies, which is of course a good idea, but there's still a pay to play aspect of this. I have enough money to be able to pay the amounts those who have approached me have asked me to pay, but many other worthy individuals may not have as much money as I have.
While there are many ethical paid editors, many in your situation who do pay after getting an offer unannounced later complain about there being no changes to the article or ballooning costs for nonsensical reasons. With how large Wikipedia is, some articles will not get the coverage they should have. It is not done out of malice, but simply because there is a lack of editors and time. There is no need to pay! If you do not want to update your article, you can ask! Each article has a 'talk' page next to the title. You can leave a message there with better sources or things you think should be changed. Your article's talk page is: Talk:James McClelland (psychologist). This is the preferred way of updating your article (for free!)
  • I would be interested in knowing if Wikipedia sets priorities and has a way of encouraging volunteers to create and edit entries to ensure that priority topics are covered, based on objective measures. For a scientist, for example, this could be based on citations of an individual's scientific output.
There is! While "objective" is hard to pin down, all Wikipedia articles have a "priority" and "ranking." Most of the time, they do not mean much. A ranking reflects the article's quality while the ranking is meant users to help find more impactful articles. The article about you is ranked "start" and "Mid-importance". Nice! These rankings are assigned based on what editors believe it should have. These groups of editors form Wikiprojects around things they are interested in. In this case, Wikiproject:Psychology has this page to explain ranks and priorities. The content on that page is very similar to how every article on Wikipedia works.
  • Is there an article or policy specifically about policies related to paying people to create and edit pages paid for by the subject of the page?
That would be WP:SCAM as a warning to not give them money! GGOTCC 15:26, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Also: if any of the emails claim to be "moderators" (which is not a thing) or Wikimedia staff, ignore it as they will never ask for money or cold-call people. GGOTCC 15:34, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, this information is really helpful! I have a follow up question. Are there collections of Wikipedia contributors who work together as representatives of a scientific discipline? For example there might be a group of individuals who seek to ensure coverage of important topics and individuals within a field, such as the field of linguistics or statistics. 2601:647:6980:920:585E:5F7C:2100:49CB (talk) 16:02, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jlmcc94303 Yes! Those would be the Wikiprojects. In your search engine, you can type Wikiproject and the name of the field to find the page. Each has their own level of activity, but there is Wikipedia:WikiProject Statistics, Wikipedia:WikiProject Linguistics, Wikipedia:WikiProject Psychology, and more! While you are free to do everything independently, the groups exist to share knowledge about things they are interested in and allow for more co-operation. GGOTCC 16:08, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your prompt engagement and replies! 2601:647:6980:920:585E:5F7C:2100:49CB (talk) 16:10, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jlmcc94303 You are very welcome! Would you like assistance with the article on you? GGOTCC 16:24, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again - to answer your question, perhaps you could assist me on the article about myself as well as on two or three other articles (those of David Rumelhart and Jonathan D. Cohen). More detail below. Let me know what you think.
My interest goes beyond simply wanting a better page for myself. Possibly, I should start working toward creating a project. Here's a bit of relevant context and background.
My goal would be to see better coverage of the interdisciplinary intersection my research attempts to address, perhaps best captured as a discipline by the name Cognitive Computational Neuroscience -- for me it is the field exemplified by researchers who seek to understand our our human cognitive abilities arise from the processes taking place within the neural networks of the brain, combining studies of behavior in humans and animals, observation and manipulation (where ethical) of neural activity, and computational and theoretical work attempting to link these behavioral and neural levels. I am one of the leading contributors in this field, but by no means the only important figure, and the ideas the group of leaders of this field have been promoting go back to work by many others.
For me the first priority would be to update the pages of David Rumelhart, and Jeffrey Elman, both of whom are deceased, and Jonathan D. Cohen, still alive Full disclosure requires me to mention that all three were my close collaborators and personal friends (Cohen still is a good friend). I have major papers with all of them, while all had major contributions that I did not directly contribute to, and which have a very important legacy within the fields of Cognitive Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Cognitive Neuroscience, which go beyond the traditional disciplines of Psychology, Linguistics, and Neuroscience, into which they have been placed. Their Wikipedia pages, along with mine, are considered starter pages (or stubs in the case of Elman and Cohen).
When I think of how best to make decisions about which pages should be updated, the simplest objective measure is citation count as reflected in Google Scholar. On this basis Rumelhart and Cohen, and then yours truly, are clearly in a strong position. Elman's overall impact is less, so I guess objectively he would be of a lower priority,
David Rumelhart: Never created a google scholar profile, but probably his works have received around 200,000 citations
Jonathan D. Cohen: 200,000
James McClelland 144,000
Jeffrey Elman: 53,000
Others whose work overlaps with this group, such as Terrence Sejnowski (175K) and Stephen Grossberg (88K) have more complete pages. 2601:647:6980:920:585E:5F7C:2100:49CB (talk) 19:24, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Plejad-class torpedo boat

[edit]

I have looked at the contest entry for this article. It appears to be a C-class article. Please provide additional information on the ships' uses, assignments and, if applicable, activities. Then it can be confirmed as meeting criterion b2 and B class. Unless ships or ships classes are prototypes or experimental, with no significant uses, actions or deployments, this type of information is needed to reasonably cover the topic without obvious omissions. You have written such articles so I think you are already familiar with these assessments. On the other hand, the assessor who is a new user and apparently relatively young may not have enough experience to assess B class articles, especially the b2 criterion. I am not sure why as a new user that person has stepped in to assess the article. I plan to leave a message that will be somewhat encouraging but will ask the user to get more experience and watch some assessments to be able to handle this task. Thanks. Of course, you can let it go to C and upgrade it to B next month for the appropriate points. I suspect you may wish to do it this month if you can. Thanks. Donner60 (talk) 05:49, 27 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, okay. Thank you, Donner60! I'll change the ranking on the article and competition page. I assumed MilHist Bot rated the article and I did not bother to check the edit history.
While I do aim to write B-class articles, most of these more obscure foreign warships lack information on their service life outside of dates or overtly vague descriptions. Despite this, I find them interesting enough to warrant an article and a solid base for any future reworking.
Cheers! GGOTCC 06:02, 27 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thank you for being my mentor. I have a question about adding photos. Can we use photos of celebrities or popular personalities from the web, with proper attribution, to add to Wikipedia? If not, can you please help with how to work with images of people, places, buildings, logos of companies, etc.? Thank you! --Fitalnamsu (talk) 00:28, 30 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and thank you for your interest in editing Wikipedia!
That is an excellent question. In short, the answer is: it depends on copyright. Here at Wikipedia, all of the images are hosted at Wikimedia Commons, which hosts the images seen on every Wikipedia in every language and more! If you want an image of a specific person, Wikimedia Commons probably has it. You can insert it directly into a Wikipedia article by clicking "Insert" and "Photo" while editing.
You can also add images to Wikimedia Commons, but you need permission. If the image is yours, you can do whatever you want. When you upload an image, it steps you through who to credit. You can also say if copyright expired or if none applies. You can just click the "Upload" button on Wikimedia Commons to get started!

The main issue is that the draft itself has no sources, meaning no one can tell where the information comes from and check if it is correct. Also, sources from the topic itself are not reliable. You can read Help:Referencing for beginners for more.

[edit]

when can i edit bigger things like erika kirks page? --Thelastsahur (talk) 05:26, 3 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and welcome!
The short answer is "it depends." Some articles are locked due to persistent vandalism, so only non-new accounts can edit it. Some, such as USS Gyatt, have a grey lock on the upper corner. This means an account needs to be 3 days old and with 10 edits made to edit the article. Other articles, such as Erica Kirk, have a blue lock. To edit these pages, accounts need to be older than 30 days and have made 500 edits. In the meantime, there are plenty of other important yet unprotected articles out there.
