History
[edit]The market is esstablished a decade ago,[2] facilitating the sale of preserved fishes to consumers in the region.[3] It is described as one of the early dedicated dry fish markets in Tamil Nadu, India.[4][5][6] It is described as having been established to facilitate the sale of preserved fish, including sun-dried and salted varieties, from coastal fishing communities to inland areas.[7][8][9]
Market operations
[edit]The market operates only o Sunday, small vendors from 25 fishing villages of the district opens the stalls by about 5:00 a.m. and continue selling to retail buyers until late afternoon.[1]
Challenges and infrastructure improvements
[edit]Despite its historical significance, the Mayiladuthurai dry fish market has faced infrastructural challenges. The market operates on land leased annually from the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Welfare Department, but permanent facilities such as water taps, toilets, and shelters have not been provided. In recent years, local officials have announced plans to improve infrastructure, sanitation, and vendor support to modernize the market.[2][10][11]
