Is there a consensus on whether to use actor vs actress?

[edit]

I honestly thought it would be simple to find that out, but my search-fu doesn't seem to be up to it.

Do we prefer using (for a woman) actor or actress? Or is it just case-by-case and up to individual editors? MilesVorkosigan (talk) 17:47, 25 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Unless the woman involved makes a fuss about it and demands to be called an actor, which does happen, just say she's an actress. Geraldo Perez (talk) 18:03, 25 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thank you. The article did say actor before, someone just changed it to actress. Wasn't sure if anything needed to be done.
The actress won't object, she passed in 2022 (Sally Kellerman). MilesVorkosigan (talk) 18:09, 25 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hah, I was pretty certain it had been discussed already, thanks for the links. MilesVorkosigan (talk) 18:31, 25 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
MOS:GNL, to me, implies that "actor" would be preferred over "actress" on the basis of gender neutrality, but I'm not sure my opinion represents a majority opinion on the subject. DonIago (talk) 19:34, 25 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't read through all of the links I found, but I don't think there's ever been a solid consensus one way or another. I dislike genderized profession labels because there's no good reason for them other than to call attention to the fact that a woman is doing something, like a dancing bear in a circus. I expect that eventually they'll all fade away into history. That said, "actress" is still in common use (unlike, say, "aviatrix") and isn't going to confuse the reader, so on a scale of "how important is one term over the other", I'd say meh. Schazjmd (talk) 19:57, 25 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I agree it's objectively small potatoes, but an article like Mae Whitman has seen a lot of ping-ponging over this, and I don't know how to resolve it when there doesn't appear to be any good guidance on the matter. I suppose ideally we might go by what the subject of the article prefers. DonIago (talk) 20:31, 25 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Backstage has a thoughtful article on the question (2024). It points out that most of the major awards still have gender-specific awards, but does conclude Regardless of the role or who’s playing it, the correct term is “actor.” Retiring the use of “actress” promotes equality, signifying that men, women, and gender nonconforming individuals can all pursue the same art without stigma or stereotype. Schazjmd (talk) 20:38, 25 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I like this. The general points made here might be a fine addition to GNL. Thank you! DonIago (talk) 20:54, 25 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki-table for actor/writer/director/producer BLPs

[edit]

Hi, can someone point me to a hyphenate BLP (or biography article) which has a table that lists their filmography and has columns to check (or not) whether they were actor and/or director, writer, producer of each work?

I'm thinking of creating such a table/chart for a current article but I can't seem to find a sample even though I've seen them around.

Thanks in advance! Softlavender (talk) 11:58, 15 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Draft article for Aleks Le – feedback welcome

[edit]

Hi everyone! I'm currently working on a draft article for voice actor Draft:Aleks Le, known for roles in anime and video games such as Demon Slayer, Solo Leveling, and Street Fighter 6. He's received notable recognition, including a Crunchyroll Anime Award for Best English Voice Artist.

Since this falls within the scope of WikiProject Actors and Filmmakers, I’d love any feedback, suggestions, or help improving the draft—especially around sourcing, notability, and formatting. Thanks in advance! Cman81 (talk) 23:12, 9 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
