WikiCup 2019 March newsletter
[edit]And so ends the first round of the competition. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2. With 56 contestants qualifying, each group in Round 2 contains seven contestants, with the two leaders from each group due to qualify for Round 3 as well as the top sixteen remaining contestants.
Our top scorers in Round 1 were:
L293D, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with ten good articles on submarines for a total of 357 points.
Adam Cuerden, a WikiCup veteran, came next with 274 points, mostly from eight featured pictures, restorations of artwork.
MPJ-DK, a wrestling enthusiast, was in third place with 263 points, garnered from a featured list, five good articles, two DYKs and four GARs.
Usernameunique came next at 243, with a featured article and a good article, both on ancient helmets.
Squeamish Ossifrage was in joint fifth place with 224 points, mostly garnered from bringing the 1937 Fox vault fire to featured article status.
Ed! was also on 224, with an amazing number of good article reviews (56 actually).
These contestants, like all the others, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews on 143 good articles, one hundred more than the number of good articles they claimed for, thus making a substantial dent in the review backlog. Well done all!
Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.
If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! [edit]The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were
Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.
Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.
Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

[edit]Hi ZZ47. Thank you for your work on Hassan Raif Ahmed. Another editor, Icem4k, has reviewed it as part of new pages patrol and left the following comment:
Thank you for creating the article on Hassan Raif Ahmed. The subject meets notability per WP:NFOOTY as he has represented the Maldives national football team and plays at the top domestic level with Maziya S&RC.
Some quick suggestions to improve the article further:
Expand sections on his club and international career, including key matches and goals.
Add more independent sources, such as local Maldivian sports coverage or AFC Cup match reports.
Consider adding standard sections like Early life, Career statistics, and Honours.
Clean up formatting and ensure reference dates and data are up to date.
Overall, this is a solid stub that can grow into a full biography with a few improvements.

File permission problem with File:Ilan 2023.jpg
[edit]
Thanks for uploading File:Ilan 2023.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.
If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{permission pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. Here is a list of your uploads. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F11 of the criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:46, 18 August 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the feedback. I am actually unable to figure out how to add the proof. This photo was taken by me, and previously have used in my article written on Mihaaru; https://mihaaru.com/sports/124978. Hope to get your help fixing the issue before this gets deleted. Thank you. ZZ47 (talk) 06:36, 19 August 2025 (UTC)
- If you took the photo yourself, then it's considered to be your c:COM:Own work, and you, as its copyright holder, can upload it to Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons (Commons is actually better for something like this) under a free license of your own choosing as long as you do so in accordance with c:COM:L or WP:DCM. You should understand, though, that the only types of free licenses that Wikipedia and Commons accept aren't very restrictive and basically allow anyone anywhere in the world to download your work and reuse for any purposes (including commercial and derivative reuse) as long as they comply with the terms of the license you choose. Your given advance permission to others to reuse your photo without needing to ask you directly as long as they do so in accordance with the terms of the license you choose. Moreover, if, by chance, someone does violate those terms, you as the copyright holder will be responsible for getting them to stop; in other words, Wikipedia won't go after such violators on your behalf. Since the photo was previously published prior to you uploading it to Wikipedia, you will need to send a WP:CONSENT email to Wikimedia VRT if you're unable to modify the licensing of the Mihaaru article where the photo was used as explained in c:COM:VRT#Licensing images: when do I contact VRT?.If you do decide to send a CONSENT email, you should get an automated reply from VRT saying your email has been received. Once that happens, you can add the template
{{Permission pending}}
to the file's page and this will let others know that you did email VRT. A VRT member will eventually review the email and assess it. If the VRT member finds everything to be OK, they will replace the "Permission pending" template with{{Permission ticket}}
and everything will be OK. If the VRT member feels there's a problem with the email, they will use{{Permission received}}
instead and probably contact you via email to explain what the issue is. The automated reply you receive from VRT will contain a VRT ticket number and you can reference this number if you want to ask questions about the status of your email at WP:VRTN. Of course, everything I posted above only works if you actually took the photo yourself; if someone else took it, then you will need to have them send a CONSENT email to VRT. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:46, 19 August 2025 (UTC) - This file was just VRT verified so there's no longer any issues related to WP:F11 associated with it; however, it would be a big help if you could add more information about the photo's provenance to the "Summary" section on the file's page. You can either do this by using the template
{{Information}}
and filling in as many of the parameters as you can or by adding such information manually. You can also tweak the syntax for the{{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}
license you've released the photo under by using the|Attribution details=
parameter if you want to be attributed by name by reusers of your photo. This will make much clear to anyone wanting to reuse the photo on who they need to attribute in order to comply with the photo's copyright licensing. Of course, you don't need to provide your real name as the "author" of the photo, and you can use your Wikipedia username instead if you want. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:58, 26 August 2025 (UTC)- Thank you. I have added more information in the summary section with the information template. Would you please review the edit? ZZ47 (talk) 06:59, 27 August 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for adding more information to the file's description. Once again, though, you can use only your Wikipedia account user name for "author" in the file's description. You don't need to publicly connect your real name to your account if you don't want to and are concerned about things like WP:REALWORLD. For sure, you can if you want, but it's not a requirement. For reference, there's a record of who you are in the email VRT has on file if anyone questions your copyright authorship of this photo, but VRT won't make the details of that email public if asked. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:39, 28 August 2025 (UTC)

[edit]The fourth round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 29 August. The penultimate round saw three contestants score more than 800 points:
BeanieFan11 (submissions) with 1,175 round points, mainly from sports-related articles, including 17 good articles, 27 did you know articles, and 9 in the news articles
Arconning (submissions) with 1,090 round points, mainly from articles about athletes and politicians, including a featured article on Philippines at the 1924 Summer Olympics, 9 good articles, 28 did you know articles, and a wide assortment of featured and good article reviews
AirshipJungleman29 (submissions) with 854 round points, mostly from a high-scoring featured article on the Indian leader Rani of Jhansi and two good articles, in addition to 13 featured and good article reviews
Everyone who competed in Round 4 will advance to Round 5 unless they have withdrawn. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far, while the full scores for Round 4 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 9 featured articles, 12 featured lists, 98 good articles, 9 good topic articles, more than 150 reviews, nearly 100 did you know articles, and 18 in the news articles.
In advance of the fifth and final round, the judges would like to thank every contestant for their hard work. As a reminder, any content promoted after 29 August but before the start of Round 5 can be claimed in Round 5. In addition, note that Round 5 will end on 31 October at 23:59 UTC. Awards at the end of Round 5 will be distributed based on who has the most tournament points over all five rounds, and special awards will be distributed based on high performance in particular areas of content creation (e.g., most featured articles in a single round).
Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. [edit] Hello, I'm Zackmann08. Thank you for your recent contributions to Ali Shamal Abdulla. When you were adding content to the page, you added duplicate arguments to a template which can cause issues with how the template is rendered. In the future, please use the preview button before you save your edit; this helps you find these errors as they will display in yellow at the top of the page. Thanks. - Hello! I just wanted to request that you archive your user talk page. While it may not be bothersome to you, many editors have slow connections, and having a very large talk page can hamper communication. If you need help, just check out the guide over at Help:Archiving a talk page. Thanks! Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 09:42, 23 September 2025 (UTC)
