Usenet II

[edit]

Regarding your close of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Usenet II (2nd nomination), I agree that the consensus was to keep. What I'm puzzled by is your addition of "without blowing up and starting again". The current article is almost 100% unsourced. How can we keep that text? I've seen this pattern before; we have an article that's crap, people find sources at the AfD which lead to the article being kept, but then nobody actually does anything about fixing up the article. That appears to be what's going to happen here and it doesn't seem like a positive outcome. WP:V says Any material that needs an inline citation but does not have one may be removed, but if I did that, it would leave about one sentence, which would be contrary to your close. So I'm unsure how to proceed. RoySmith (talk) 12:47, 3 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The "blowing up and starting over" would be deleting the article and waiting until somebody wrote a new revision of it, based on sources. As it was though, people thought that they could take the article, add sources, clear up any unverifiable content, and be left with a higher quality article. However, it's never been policy to mandate quality of articles and we can't force people to improve the encyclopedia by executive fiat. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 08:11, 4 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Johnnysekuad (10:24, 6 August 2025)

[edit]

Hello, I'm trying to establish a page on myself and my career in film, music, TV and radio. I understand that this is frowned upon. My projects and achievements are easily verifiable. How would you advise I continue? Best wishes Johnny --Johnnysekuad (talk) 10:24, 6 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The best advice I can give you is to read this advice that says why an article about yourself on Wikipedia is not necessarily a good thing. If your achievements are verifiable and turn up in multiple sources, it's likely somebody will create an article about it. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 13:04, 7 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations! - Today a great singer is pictured on my talk twice. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:58, 17 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Today's story - short version: ten years ago we had a DYK about a soprano who sang in concerts with me in the choir, - longer: I found today a youtube of an aria she sang with us then, recorded the same year, - if you still have time: our performances were the weekend before the Iraq war ultimatum, and we sang Dona nobis pacem (and the drummer drummed!) as if they could hear us in Washington. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:52, 18 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Scissormove (06:54, 11 August 2025)

[edit]

I had my page rejected and wish to start a new one, discarding the old one. How do I do that? --Scissormove (talk) 06:54, 11 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

This looks like it should belong somewhere else on the internet, rather than a general purpose encyclopedia. Have you considered publishing it on something like Medium? That's worked well for things I've written about that don't fit the remit of an encyclopedia. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 07:48, 11 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I went into edit and deleted all that was there and started another article. There does not seem to be any way to save the text. If I leave the page all is lost. --Scissormove (talk) 22:58, 11 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Draft:Alfred Greeley Safford appears to have been created correctly. DoubleGrazing, what makes The Whist Reference Book (John C. Yorston, 1898) an unreliable source? Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 08:30, 12 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi,
Do you mind if I just repeat what I already said on the author's talk page?
"The reason I declined this draft is that it cites two sources, one of which is authored by the subject himself, and this is not enough to establish notability per the general WP:GNG guideline. And with only one independent (presumably) source, cited against the opening sentence of the draft, almost the entire content is left unsupported by reliable and independent sources"
I'm not saying that the Reference Book is unreliable, I'm saying that the draft isn't adequately supported by reliable sources.
I should probably also add that the primary reason for declining was the insufficient evidence of notability, rather than the referencing per se. It's just that the AFCH script doesn't respect the order in which I select the reasons, it puts them in the order it wants to.
Best, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 08:40, 12 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ah okay. I think this is a problem with some of the AfC template messages, they don't describe the complete nuances of what the reviewer meant. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 08:44, 12 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello...what is citation

How I'm I supposed to edit Wikipedia? --Victoria Mwendwa (talk) 10:48, 12 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

A citation is information about text in the encyclopedia that editors can look and research to check for factual accuracy. Citations can be books, newspapers, magazines or online variants of those, among others. Referencing for beginners is a good place to start. My apologies, this was a misunderstanding. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MadelynnSienna (talkcontribs) 16:13, 12 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

MadelynnSienna I want to clear up a few things. Neither you or Robherry is banned (in terms of Wikipedia policy); rather you were both blocked because you repeatedly reverted each other, and those edits were getting in the way of several other editors who wanted to contribute to The Life of a Showgirl (and have now done so). I have warned Robherry about civility, and that seems to have done the trick, so I don't feel like any further action is required. The block will automatically expire in a couple of days; as you have both seen, there are other articles available to work on in the meantime. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 15:44, 12 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Return of edit-warring from blocked editor

[edit]

I noticed you provided Ronherry a 72-hour block at The Life of a Showgirl, and since returning from that block, they have immediately resumed their warring behaviour. Just thought I would let you know. livelikemusic (TALK!) 20:53, 15 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I see the report is still open after two days. To be honest, I'm tempted to close it as "stale" as there doesn't appear to be any behaviour right now where a block would be appropriate. I'll see what happens over the next day or so. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 08:22, 18 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
