Hello InsightAdventurer. The nature of your edits, such as the one you made to Draft:Sam Bayat Makoo, gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being employed (or being compensated in any way) by a person, group, company or organization to promote their interests. Paid advocacy on Wikipedia must be disclosed even if you have not specifically been asked to edit Wikipedia. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not and is an especially serious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat search-engine optimization.
Paid advocates are strongly discouraged from direct article editing and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.
Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:InsightAdventurer. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=InsightAdventurer|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}
. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. voorts (talk/contributions) 14:34, 19 September 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you, @voorts, for highlighting this and explaining the policies. I assure you that I am not being directly or indirectly compensated for my edits. I have no financial stake, employment, or any form of payment related to promoting Mr. Sam Bayat Makoo or his interests. As mentioned in my previous response, my interest is purely as an independent editor researching notable figures in immigration law and historical contexts. If needed, I can add a statement to my user page confirming no COI, but since there's none, I won't use the 'paid' template.
- I'll refrain from further edits until I've addressed your concerns about sources and updated the draft accordingly. Once done, I'll seek feedback through appropriate channels like Teahouse or WikiProjects before considering AfC submission. Thank you for ensuring compliance with WP:COI, WP:NPOV, and other policies.
- your guidance is appreciated! InsightAdventurer (talk) 16:37, 19 September 2025 (UTC)
- This attorney is the only topic you have edited about; people rarely choose topics at random. Your seeming strong personal investment in this topic makes it seem like you have more than a passing interest here. Why did you choose Mr. Makoo to edit about, and not another attorney? 331dot (talk) 17:37, 19 September 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you, @331dot, for your question and for taking the time to review my contributions. I understand why my focus on this topic might seem unusual, and I’m happy to clarify my motivations.
- My interest in editing about Mr. Sam Bayat Makoo comes from my research into descendants of the Bayat tribe, a historically significant group in Iran known for their role in events like reclaiming southern Iran from British influence. While researching notable individuals from this tribe, I came across Mr. Bayat, a Quebec-licensed attorney and author, and thought he might qualify for a Wikipedia article. I have no personal or professional connection to him or his firm, as stated on my user page per WP:COI.
- While this is my first editing project on English Wikipedia, I’ve made around 100 edits on Persian Wikipedia across various topics, so I’m not entirely new to Wikipedia’s policies. However, I acknowledge that my sources for this draft (Draft:Sam Bayat Makoo) may not meet WP:NBIO or WP:GNG, as pointed out by @Voorts and others. I’ve removed non-independent sources (e.g., Gulf News, IMI Daily) and kept only *The Corporate Immigration Review* and *Le Barreau du Québec*, but I’m struggling to find additional independent coverage. My searches (e.g., Google Scholar, News) mostly return firm-related content.
- I’ve also been working on the Bayat tribe article on Persian Wikipedia and plan to improve its English counterpart, which is incomplete. If sufficient independent sources for Mr. Bayat aren’t found, I’ll consider withdrawing the draft or merging it into a related article (e.g., on the Bayat tribe). Do you have any suggestions for finding reliable sources or next steps? Thank you for your guidance! InsightAdventurer (talk) 17:51, 19 September 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for your answer. I don't really have any additional advice to offer, but I wish you well. 331dot (talk) 18:34, 19 September 2025 (UTC)
