FYA - Plutarch

Maybe this'll amuse you as one of the occasional delights in the "Dryden": highlighting Shakespeare arguing with Plutarch. Shakespeare would probably have read North's translation, whose Numa has

"Surely it is a common thing, that happeneth unto all good and just men, that they are farre more praysed and esteemed after their death, then before: because that envie doth not long continue after their death...."

Shakespeare disagreed in Julius Caesar: "The evil that men do lives after them; The good is oft interred with their bones".

The Dryden, I think, picked up on that in translating Numa "It is the fortune of all good men that their virtue rises in glory after their deaths, and that the envy which evil men conceive against them never outlives them long...", carefully perpetuating the dispute.
