Phone number for public phone box

[edit]

Hi, Hassocks5489.

I was pleased to see your photo of the K6 phone booth outside St. Mary's in Shoreham. Would you happen to have a phone number for it (if it indeed remains a public phone box with a number)? I am setting up an Easter Treasure Hunt remotely, using Google Earth, and would very much like to enable a small boy to cause the phone to ring. I'd be grateful f you could reply to gordonink at gmail.com before April 2nd, 2015.

Thanks in advance for your attention to the above,

Gordonink

Grade Is in Oxford

[edit]

HJ Mitchell - Hi Hassocks, I hope you are keeping well. I'd be grateful for your, and Harry's, thoughts on this, Grade I listed buildings in Oxford, which I've been doing a bit on. I think it would benefit considerably from a Notes column. We have these for the Welsh Grade Is by Principal Area, e.g. Grade I listed buildings in Monmouthshire, but we don't have them in the English counties, as far as I can see, e.g. Grade I listed buildings in Oxfordshire. Then I found this, Grade I listed buildings in Coventry - promoted FL in 2012 and on the main page in about two weeks! I see it was Harry's work with input from yourself. Do you think there would be any reasonable objection to adding a Notes column to Oxford, in the same way? Your thoughts on that, and on any other improvements that may suggest themselves, would be much appreciated. KJP1 (talk) 17:42, 12 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@KJP1 and HJ Mitchell: Greetings to you both! All is well here in sunny Hove (not sunny today though). Good to hear that the Coventry list will be on the main page soon! Anyway, in relation to Oxfordshire (and other listed buildings lists), I have always been a strong advocate of having a Notes column summarising as much information from the associated article as possible. I thought it was a pity that such a column was never included when the various county-level lists were written (semi-automatically generated, if I remember rightly) some years ago. All listed buildings lists I have written include Notes, sourced to books etc. where possible as well as just to the listing particulars: a couple of examples here. I can't see how there would be an objection to including additional info in this way, and if there was, I would weigh in and make the case for them! I'll look over the list and see if there are any other improvements I can make, although it's not a county for which I have any book sources (and despite making a few visits to the likes of Oxford and Banbury, I'm not too familiar with it). Cheers, Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 11:36, 13 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hassocks - that’s very helpful and kind. I shall go ahead and add a Notes column to Oxford. The work of adding them to all of the English counties would be enormous! What a pity it wasn’t done at the outset, but we’ve all learned a lot in nearly two decades on here. I’ll just plod on adding the more obscure Grade Is. I recently got 27 in one go with Oxford city walls. And this, Christ Church Mercury Fountain, has to be the most obscure bit of Lutyens going. I bet Harry’s not heard of it. But neither had I! All the best. KJP1 (talk) 17:32, 13 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That's very obscure! You're right, I'd never heard of it. I generally support notes in lists of buildings. Some of the lists with broad scopes are a bit unwieldy as it is but this is one case where I think it's useful to have lots of lists with different levels of detail so everyone can find what they're looking for. St Paul's Church

[edit]

Hi Hassocks, hope you're doing well.

I've been working on my list of the tallest buildings in B&H and remember you had contributed to it a while back and was wondering if you'd be able to help me with something. I'm pretty certain that St Paul's on West Street is over 40m as you can see its spire from quite a distance, however I have been unable to find a source to verify this. If you get a chance I would really appreciate it if you could have a look for some information regarding the church's height.

Thanks, harrz talk 16:46, 27 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Good to hear from you Harrz, and I hope all is well with you. I've been going through various book sources today but annoyingly haven't found any height-related info yet. The book Wagners of Brighton had a particularly detailed description of the architecture, but didn't mention the height. I will keep looking through other books I have available.
Separately, the next Brighton meetup at the Wetherspoons down West Street has been arranged for Saturday 6th September: short notice due to other commitments in September for the "regulars", but I hope you can make it. Cheers, Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 13:58, 29 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ah that's a shame. No worries if you can't find anything but I thought it was worth a shot as the internet hasn't provided much. There may be some other churches around the city which are tall enough for the list such as St. Peter's, although I haven't found anything online for that so far. I managed to find St John's in Hove was 49 m which was quite surprising, so maybe there's a couple others hiding in plain sight.
As for the meetup, I'm afraid I'll be up in Lincolnshire that weekend but I wish everyone well. Enjoy the last week of summer (although it looks like it's going to be a wet one!) harrz talk 15:24, 29 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Brighton 6

[edit]

Hey! I'm still on the IoW but I managed to free up the 6th. To set up the meetup page, basically c&p this edit to m:Meetup/Brighton/6 and change the date etc. I'm sure if you ask @Redrose64 and The wub: nicely they can help you get it linked from all the right places. There's also a spam list at m:Meetup/Brighton. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 11:47, 29 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

'Tis done! Hope the heavy showers we have been getting here have missed the island...! See you on 6th, Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 13:54, 29 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Acalamari: Many thanks: look out for a reply from my "trainticketmatt" email address, just sent! Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 20:15, 8 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

BABH

[edit]

Hiya! See what you think of my recent edits to Buildings and architecture of Brighton and Hove. I've done a little bit of tinkering (nothing major!) and added a section for monuments. All sourced, of course! And including a few red links in case we're looking for a project! Now put it up for peer review. Right now! ;) I reckon a few updates might be needed here (things like statistics that age quicker than other things) and there but otherwise I can't see any reason it wouldn't do well at FAC. The only other criticism I can foresee is the length, but worst-case scenario there is we hive some of it off into sub-articles. But we'll cross that bridge if we get to it. Put it up for PR! Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:46, 7 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Also, checking we're good for 25 October in Portsmouth and 29 November in Brighton (assuming I can get the time off work but that time of year it shouldn't be a problem). Would be good to have a list of things we want to see in Portsmouth so we can plan in advance. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:29, 8 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@HJ Mitchell: Cheers Harry – I'll have a proper look at BABH tomorrow or later this week, but from a brief glance all seems good. I'll try to get round to launching a PR before my Bournemouth trip next week. (By the way, are there any pics you need in the Bournemouth/Christchurch/Poole areas?)
Both 25th Oct and 29th Nov are confirmed as good for me. I'll think of some Portsmouth things: I have put together some lists for myself in the past of things worth photographing, mostly listed or locally listed buildings. I'll look through those and refine them into a possible "plan". Cheers, Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 20:20, 8 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'll check the work calendar tomorrow and aim to start advertising the meetups in the next week or so assuming all is good. I don't know Portsmouth well. I took the city's war memorial to FA some years ago and the navy memorial on Southsea Common has been on my to-do list for a long time. There's plenty of naval/maritime monuments near the seafront but I've never really explored the city centre or the harbour. The dockyard and museums would be interesting but they're pricey! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:01, 8 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@HJ Mitchell: Hope all is well! I'm not long back from my Bournemouth trip, so I've been sorting out photos – another thousand-odd to add to the infamous backlog! – and doing a bit of uploading. I'll hopefully get round to taking it to PR tomorrow: I've written myself a note. Cheers for the tweaks: all looks good. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 21:44, 22 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to see you finally got it up at PR! I'll watchlist the review and do some bits of tinkering when I get chance. I've still got Portsmouth pencilled in my calendar for 25 October and Brighton for 29 November; are we still on for those? If so, I'll sort the paperwork on Meta. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:57, 29 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers! Yep, all good for both dates. I'm putting together a list of possibly interesting buildings to photograph in Pompey; will add it to the page once the paperwork is complete. Hopefully the weather will behave! Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 21:36, 29 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
m:Meetup/Portsmouth/4. I went for an earlier start so we have time for lunch and a walk (pray to the weather gods!) before we lose the light. There's a 10:50 arrival at PMS (09:28 from BTN). I'll meet you at probably Barnham. Are you happy with that? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:12, 30 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent – that will work fine for me. I'll check the trains in the morning; if there are problems with that one, there is a Southampton service 15 minutes before (arr. Ford 0950 or Barnham 0955) which will connect at Havant with Pompey services. Will update you by text if required, otherwise I'll be in the front carriage. See you then! Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 12:24, 30 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
And m:Meetup/Brighton/7. November might be a bit chilly but would still be nice to get out and about. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:41, 6 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
