You can add the {{In use}} template to the article, which results in a notice letting others know the article is being actively edited.
You can work on the changes and additions in your sandbox.

For example, Clade X was an exercise about pandemics.

Yes, I have added the appropriate portals to the talk pages for those pages. (Something I often forget to do. I will double-check all my creations to make sure they have portals)
