Question from MiekMe (21:34, 18 November 2025)

[edit]

Hi Gnoeee. You've been assigned to me as Wikipedia mentor.

Strange question. I suggested having an experimental Wikipedia edit sprint at a math conference. However, I am not a very experienced Wikipedian myself. I assume/hope that it is OK to coordinate and document the sprint's activities from a user space page as here: User:MiekMe/FAOTSA2025. It would be most useful to use the same platform as a sandbox for novice Wikipedians.

Any advice or suggestions for this experiment will be very welcome, maybe on the experiment's talk page User talk:MiekMe/FAOTSA2025.

Question from Monkeysmashingkeyboards (17:56, 18 October 2025)

[edit]

Just a question about the requirements for rollbacker rights - the 200 mainspace edits are a soft limit, right? It's hard to find vandalism to revert while recent changes patrolling when other users with rollbacker rights can revert it faster than I can, so I only have roughly 40 vandalism reverts. But I do have 160 mainspace edits, and HKLionel is willing to be my CVA mentor, so I should be fine to apply for permissions after I'm done training, right? --monkeysmashingkeyboards (talk) 17:56, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @Monkeysmashingkeyboards. There are different tools like the twinkle (which you have already been using) that have the rollback features with the custom edit summary features. If you really think you need the rollback right read the Wikipedia:Rollback and apply once you meet the criteria mentioned over there. Regards- ❙❚❚❙❙ GnOeee ❚❙❚❙❙ 17:35, 19 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

First edit notifications

[edit]

Hello! I was originally not going to post this message, but then I saw you've done the same to dozens of people and I feel it's somewhat necessary now; not everyone prefers to be notified of their editing anniversaries (for example, I opted out back in 2020). I'm not sure if your script can incorporate the Birthday Committee Calendar but it might be a good idea to avoid leaving messages for folks who might not necessarily want the extra talk page notifications. Primefac (talk) 11:13, 25 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you @Primefac for the feedback. I appreciate you bringing this to my attention.
I've been checking each user's talk page before leaving customized anniversary messages; if there's a notice requesting not to post or any indication they don't want messages, I skip them. I'm doing this as a way to welcome and acknowledge editor's contributions to the projects. I wasn't following the Birthday Committee Calendar list since it only includes a small number of users when I checked. My intention is to encourage people and appreciate their efforts. You can read more about my thoughts here at Meta-Wiki.
That said, I understand your concern. Since the Birthday Committee Calendar doesn't include all users who might prefer not to receive these messages, I'll work on creating an opt-out list where users can add their names if they'd prefer not to be wished. Thanks again for the helpful suggestion. Regards. - ❙❚❚❙❙ GnOeee ❚❙❚❙❙ 13:44, 25 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Coradpuge7 (18:17, 5 November 2025)

[edit]

hi, I notice that my username appears red when I look through the edits I have made. It is also red when I added myself to the November drive of the Guild copy editing page. How do I change that? --Coradpuge7 (talk) 18:17, 5 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Coradpuge7
A red username link simply means that you don't have your userpage yet. If you'd like to change it to blue, you can create your user page by clicking your red username link and then adding something (even a short note) and saving the page.- ❙❚❚❙❙ GnOeee ❚❙❚❙❙ 18:50, 5 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Kufunuguh (22:37, 10 November 2025)

[edit]

I only have one question, but it requires an introduction. Through a guest account I've corrected a typo on the Redd Foxx page, and I would be honored to have that correction listed on my account. It's trivial, but if I were to be counted as a contributor, even to the lowest standard, I would be honored.

Is it possible to have the correction attributed to this account?

Thank you for the opportunity, Brian --Kufunuguh (talk) 22:37, 10 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Kufunuguh. You mean you edited the above mentioned page with the Temporary account right?- ❙❚❚❙❙ GnOeee ❚❙❚❙❙ 13:28, 11 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Irfanahmad1989 (08:39, 17 November 2025)

[edit]

Hello, I just today find out Wikipedia has this mentor section where I can talk to the assigned mentor, so I want to discuss a few points with you regarding this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fake_news_websites I want to know if you are the right person to talk about this? (sorry if that feels not polite) My point is, is it right to call and list a whole website as fake based on just 1 error/mistake on 1 page, that has been updated to reflect that mistake (even though doing it late because they found it too later in time). E.g. a website (let us call it B) if accused of plagiarism because of using AI tools to write something (in summarized way, with proper mentions of sources) about a topic based on info from another website's page (let us call it website A) now that "website A" or its creator calls that page of "Website B" as illegible and thinks that page is AI-generated article (even though "website B" contacted the "website A" for clarifications but got no clear response), so just based on that claim can Wikipedia list the whole website (i.e. website B) as fake, is it even allowed for anyone to list those websites as fake on Wikipedia on behalf of anyone without investigating matters in details, if yes is this documented anywhere on the wikipedia, if not then what is the way forward. I can share the exact details if you can help me on this. Just side note I read (here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fake_news) that "aim of damaging the reputation of a person or entity" is also considered Fake so does this also makes the whole wikipedia fake? please help me understand this all. Thanks.

Best regards --Irfanahmad1989 (talk) 08:39, 17 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks

Cella m'a beaucoup étonné. Continuons!

I was very surprised by your message this morning. Thank you so much. It comes at a very particular time, because the atmosphere in VI isn't good and I'm considering quitting VI.
