ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:04, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Hullolympiques.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Hullolympiques.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. — Ирука13 10:14, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Quebec Challenge Cup.jpg.

This file is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the file description page states the source and copyright status of the derivative work, it only names the creator of the original work without specifying the status of their copyright over the work.

Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the original image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. Thanks again for your cooperation. — Ирука13 18:11, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

DSC source for 2023 Can Junior U21?

[edit]

Hello Earl. Now I translate 2023 Canadian Junior Curling Championships to Rus-Wiki - and can't find source for DSC (not in article, not on Curling Canada website, of course not on CurlingZone). Maybe you remember from where DSC was taken? By the way MXMas & HNY & GoodGame! :) -- Alexey Gustow (talk) 20:20, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Took some sleuthing (Internet Archive, but then manually changing the URLs, and then a google search), but here are the women's and the men's. -- Earl Andrew - talk 21:19, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thanks! (because I was wondered about no source) I added it to en-Wiki too. -- Alexey Gustow (talk) 22:31, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Novice attempts at "The Shot"

[edit]

Hey Earl! Working on addressing GAR comments for Jennifer Jones (curler) and the reviewer would like a source for "[The Shot] became the source of talk and attempts by novice curlers to repeat the feat in curling clubs across the country." While I entirely believe that this is true, I can't find a mention of it in the Wyman book, and none of the news articles on "The Shot" that I've found mention it either. Do you know where I might find a reference for this, or should I just take it out? Allthegoldmedals (talk) 01:11, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Allthegoldmedals Maybe take it out? It doesn't sound like something I wrote, so I don't know where it came from. Probably just fancruft. -- Earl Andrew - talk 01:40, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, it was added by an IP address in 2005. -- Earl Andrew - talk 04:29, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

WP:BOLP requires contentious material about living persons be removed immediately. Do not readd material about living persons that has been removed without citations. Legend of 14 (talk) 15:17, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You are removing information that is not contentious though. Accurate, even if not cited election results are not contentious. -- Earl Andrew - talk 15:19, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree. Attributing someone to working at a body which makes controversial decisions or content about immigration status is contentious in my opinion. If it is accurate, add a citation.

Question

[edit]

To be honest Earl, I'm also kind of confused how this unsourced content ([1] [2] [3] [4]) is capable of just being added back to the article.

Per WP:BURDEN, Any material lacking an inline citation to a reliable source that directly supports[b] the material may be removed and should not be restored without an inline citation to a reliable source (emphasis added). Per WP:BLPRS, any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be attributed to a reliable, published source using an inline citation; material not meeting this standard may be removed... This applies whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable and whether it is in a biography or in some other article. Maybe I'm missing something here. Could you help me understand? Tarlby (t) (c) 17:48, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
While it's within their rights to remove uncited claims per WP:BURDEN, I believe that Legend of 14's approach to doing so was destructive, and perhaps in bad faith. They were removing content from a lot of articles very quickly, most of the content being non contentious. Based on their edit history, and willingness to escalate this dispute, I do have to say I'm a bit suspicious of this user's true intentions.-- Earl Andrew - talk 18:05, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for answering. Although Legend's behavior could be in bad faith (idk, I didn't check thru their edits yet), are the edits themselves still appropriate? Can the unsourced content still be removed? Tarlby (t) (c) 18:07, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Taken in isolation, then yes, they are. I don't mind working to add sources to a couple of articles at a time.-- Earl Andrew - talk 18:10, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

2025 Scotties - Draw 17

[edit]

Hey Earl,

I am following the Scotties via the stats on Curling Canada's site and not able to watch live at the moment as I am at work.

I am wondering what is going on with Team Prince Edward Island in Draw 17. For the first two ends, they began the game with their normal lineup. However, beginning in the third end, both lead Whitney Jenkins and skip Jane DiCarlo (throwing third stones) both left the game with alternate Jenny White entering and leaving the team with three players and haven't found any updates online since they aren't the feature matchup. Wondering if both Jenkins and DiCarlo got injured or something else happened?

Also, I haven't found a reason why Team Nunavut lead Alison Taylor is not playing in Draw 17 either, but I presume she fell ill and had to play with three players since they didn't bring an alternate with (I did add the note to the 2025 Scotties page).

Thanks!

PEI's 27 electoral districts

[edit]

Howdy. Why are you adding district numbers to 3 of Prince Edward Island's 27 electorial provinicial districts? This creates inconsistency. Also, we don't have such additions in provincial electoral districts of other provinces. So again, why introduce inconsistencies. GoodDay (talk) 09:13, 15 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

District numbers are heavily used in PEI, more than any other province, and just as much as their actual names (sometimes moreso). If you look at elections PEI, there are links to the results of the two by-elections that don't even mention the riding's names, just the district numbers. Therefore, it's useful to have the district numbers in the article. -- Earl Andrew - talk 13:11, 15 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Editor conduct and warring

[edit]

Hi Earl. I’m a somewhat new editor. I saw that you were recently active and I wonder if you’d check out the Talk pages for the article on Jimmy Keene and the editor Sandyn987. I originally edited Keene’s article to refer to him as an “informant” rather than as an “operative,” and there’s been a low-grade edit war going with Sandyn, who has insisted in several LLM-authored comments that he be referred to as an “operative” despite the term’s vagueness. I considered leaving a note on WP:ANI, but I’ve never done anything like this before and would appreciate the independent perspective of a longtime Wikipedia. Plus, one of my own edits to the Keene article (terming him a “jailhouse informant,” which I made in the spirit of boldness, to try to break the back-and-forth reversion) was deemed inappropriate by another editor, so I don’t want it to seem personal.
