BLP death

[edit]

"I don't think there's a single, useful guide on dealing with a BLP when the person has died. To be fair, there probably is."

Yes. See WP:BDP. Daniel Case (talk) 02:38, 30 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

That's not what I meant, BDP is about whether a person is considered living under BLP or not. That quote was about specific steps to take when the subject of a BLP has died (as decided by BDP), e.g. changing pronouns from present to past tense, adding death date in infobox and lead, updating categories. Well, usually those things are sort of self-evident. BDP is, to me, about how much longer after the person has died do we have to follow BLP rules as far as sourcing of negative information, or indeed inclusion of that information when reliably sourced. Usually that's about six months ... that section used to be BRDP ("Biographies of Recently Deceased Persons").
For instance, right after Kate Spade killed herself there was a long article in the Kansas City Star in which one of her sisters said basically that she saw it coming based on her last conversations with Kate. However, the rest of the family was utterly shocked, and this sister wasn't on good terms with any of them so it was basically her uncorroborated word. So, we didn't put it in the article at the time. Only a couple of years ago, long afterwards, did I restore it. Daniel Case (talk) 18:16, 30 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Public holidays in Ireland

Whack!

You've been whacked with a wet trout.

Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that you did something silly.

You have been trouted for: Moving the Public holidays in the Republic of Ireland page to Public holidays in Ireland without first reviewing this page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Republic_of_Ireland/FAQ) and some of the content it links to. It's MOS WP:CONCISE to refer to the country just as Ireland in the text of articles, but for many years now, the consensus has been to stick to WP:NATURAL article titles which use the full ROI common name (for both the main page and subpages). And it'd be opening one big can of worms to change that for any one subpage, without first getting a consensus on one of the main Talk pages. CleverTitania (talk) 07:11, 13 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the comment, I don't think this extends to that article though? There can be only one Ireland, but MOS:IRE-IRL says[fn 1] to prefer Ireland for the state unless confusion is likely. Confusion is unlikely here, as it refers to a creation of governments (public holidays). I could see the need for NATURAL if it were, e.g. "Trees in Ireland", which transcends artificial borders. We do not have articles that list public holidays in just parts of countries, e.g. there is not even a redirect at Public holidays in British Columbia; while there is at Public holidays in California, it redirects to a US-wide article; Public holidays in Georgia is about the country and not the U.S. state.
  1. ^ I did some searching and wasn't able to find anything recent that discusses specifically article titles beyond the Republic of Ireland main article.
