How convenient that we're forgetting about that tiny little coup d'etat that preceded this invasion, my dear weebs. 2A02:A020:380:F426:B31B:4ACB:1ACC:2785 (talk) 01:14, 21 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 8 August 2025

[edit]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: not moved. It seems pretty clear that "War in Donbas" is the common name, therefore it should stay as the title. (closed by non-admin page mover) Garsh (talk) 14:00, 15 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

War in DonbasDonbas warDonbas war – Per WP:COMMONNAME, WP:CONCISE, WP:PRECISE. Basically:

  1. "Donbas war" is shorter than "War in Donbas" and should be preferred for that reason per WP:CONCISE.
  2. "War in Donbas" is potentially more ambiguous than "Donbas war", because "War in Donbas" can be interpreted as a descriptive name covering all fighting in Donbas at any time including in e.g., the Russian Civil War, WW2 etc. For example this paper uses the term "war in Donbas" when discussing German POW camps during WW2. "Donbas war" should therefore be preferred per WP:PRECISE. Donbas war already redirects here anyway.
  3. "Donbas war" is used more commonly in recently-published reliable sources directly about the war than "War in Donbas". Examples of this include -
Books
Google Books search
122 hits for "War in Donbas" versus 146 hits for "Donbas war"
"Donbas war" should therefore be preferred per WP:COMMONNAME
(I don't care about capitalisation, so if people prefer Donbas War I'm OK with that too). FOARP (talk) 13:46, 8 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME – Per English Corpora Now, "Donbas war" is only used 136 times whilst "War in Donbas" is used 325 times. Searching for academic articles on Google Scholar, something more reliable than searching for books that could be self-published, show that "War in Donbas" appears in around 2,810 articles compared to the "Donbas war's" ~1,070 results. Newer scholarly articles include:

  • Oppose To determine COMMONNAME, we need to determine the proportions of each name and not just that a name exists. This ngram[1] shows that war in Donbas is way more common than Donbas war with an emergance in litterature in 2014 that indicates this context. This is confirmed against google scholar war in Donbas 3,249 hits [2] and Donbas war 1,270 hits [3]. A perusal of the war in Donbas search is not indicating any other context. Incidentally, my search of google books gives 74 hits for war in Donbas [4] and 71 hits for Donbas war [5]. WP:PRECISION/WP:TITLEDAB pertain to actual conflicts of title in WP title space. There is no actual title conflict to be resolved. COMMONNAME carries more weight in WP:CRITERIA than CONCISION and the difference in concision is so marginal as to not displace COMMONNAME. This RM is a WOFTAM deserving a speedy close. Cinderella157 (talk) 02:01, 9 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
