Talk:Pope Leo XIV

"United States or North America"

[edit]

We have officially lost the plot. Of all the facile back and forths on whether we should call Pope Leo an American or not (which everybody in the Anglosphere is), by far the most ridiculous is this little gem of a line: "Leo XIV is the first pope to have been born in the United States or North America". Have you seen a map before? Saying he is the first pope to have been born in the United States or North America is like saying that Pope Benedict was the most recent German or European to have been pope. The US is very obviously in North America, to say that he is the first one from the United States or North America is ridiculously redundant. Saying he is the first from the United States would suffice. Can we all just agree to call him an American in English Wikipedia and whatever else in Spanish Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Midship Runabout (talkcontribs) 2025-05-13T03:00:41 (UTC) (Special:Diff/1290149657)

We should only say that he is the first born in North America. That already implies that he is the first born in the US. On another note: It's not WP:DUE to mention that he is the first pope born after WWII. How is that relevant? Joe vom Titan (talk) 12:25, 21 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
One or the other, but not both. Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 12:23, 7 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jessintime you reverted my implementation of my suggestion above. Can you point out where it was agreed to include both first US and first North American in the lead? While we're at it, why don't we also say that he is the first pope from Illinois? Is the US really so important that it needs to mentioned twice in the lead paragraph? Joe vom Titan (talk) 21:18, 15 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm I'm not sure it was discussed now, but regardless, if you can't understand the significance of him being the first pope from the US - not just North America - you shouldn't be editing the article. All of the coverage from the conclave was about him being from the US, not North America, as the idea of an American pope was basically considered taboo right up until he was elected. Jessintime (talk) 21:22, 15 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Can we take out "North America" then to avoid the redundancy? "first born in the US" and "second from the Americas" together imply that he is the first from North America. Do you object to taking out first born after WWII? Joe vom Titan (talk) 21:35, 15 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm fine with taking the North America part out and neutral on the WWII reference. I'm sorry if my prior comment was over the top. Jessintime (talk) 01:08, 16 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox

[edit]

Do we need to know his age in the infobox, when he was baptised? GoodDay (talk) 23:33, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Age in inforbox seems to be conventional. No opinion on the matter of listing date of baptism in the infobox. ~ Pbritti (talk) 23:57, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@GoodDay and Pbritti: The current displaying of his baptism date as his birth date seems to be the cause of a template edit at Special:Diff/1317833691 which undoes the expected behavior advertised in the template documentation. I've reverted the change. ~Darth StabroTalk • Contribs 00:04, 21 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to suggest updating the photo of Pope Leo XIV in the information box; the lighting in this photo looks better than the one currently being used.

This photo also reflects the differences between Pope Leo XiV and Pope Francis in their clothing styles. ~2025-36095-88 (talk) 20:31, 24 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Favorite movies

[edit]

Should we include or exclude his favorite movies?

His favorite movies are It's a Wonderful Life, The Sound of Music, Life is Beautiful and Ordinary People.[1]

Arguments pro inclusion:

1) Other things he likes are mentioned in the personal life section (football team, apple watch, supporting Peru/US in the world cup...)

2) Favorite movies like favorite books (favorite media in general) can say something about the opinions you hold or your worldview. Is that the case here and if so should we wait till secondary sources make some kind of analysis?

Arguments against inclusion:

1) IndieWire seems to be the only one paying attention to this.

2) It is not relevant to him being pope. Rolluik (talk) 11:08, 21 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'd include it, popes have given statements on just about everything: industrialization, migration, vaccines, reproduction, the arts etc. Calling theaters and cinemas ''beating hearts of communities'' is a strong statement from a pope. Killuminator (talk) 11:33, 21 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose including that trivia as irrelevant to his position. Wikipedia already has a hard enough time keeping irrelevant trivia out of articles. He's pope, not a film star or a child. Where do we draw the line in naming favorites? Favorite colors? Favorite songs? Favorite ice cream flavors? Favorite board games? Favorite dog names? It could go on endlessly. Lists of favorites trivializes both his position and the article. Do any other articles on popes list their favorite movies? For that matter, other than articles about people in the film industry, what other articles about people with his level of notability (that would include heads of state and major religious figures) list favorite movies? Spelling Mistake

[edit]

Under Papacy (2025-Present), it says "The diocese later reopened the case and resent it to the Vatican, and thus it remains "open up to now."'

I presume it should say presented instead of "resent." ~2025-38388-89 (talk) 15:08, 4 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

No, I think it means "re-sent", or sent again. --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 15:38, 4 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
