Talk:Olib

Image matters

[edit]

@Matijaolib: @Drmies: @Boba 99: Pinging you three here since you're all belligerents in this edit-war.

I'm going to start the discussion about what image should be used in the infobox of the article - File:Olib2.jpg or File:Olib (village seen from NW).jpg. I will stay out of this (as I do have opinions on this matter), but the discussion needs to begin sooner rather than later. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v threads critiques 03:02, 23 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Both images are illustrative. I placed File:Olib2.jpg in a thumbnail with a description for the time being. Since File:Olib (village seen from NW).jpg illustrates both the island and the town, which are not yet separate articles, it seems the more appropriate image for the infobox. I have added a gallery with other encyclopedic images. Ⰻⱁⰲⰰⱀⱏ (ⰳⰾ) 03:41, 23 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I prefer the photo which was there from 2006 through 2022.

[edit]

I respectfully disagree with you, @Иованъ I have a different reason for starting this page than you do as a direct descendant of those who fled Vrlika in 1476. (BTW, like your use of Glagolitic stript.) I started it as a page to illustrate and write all about Olib, from the past to the present day. My purpose is in line with Wikipedia’s mission, including my original photo, in my opinion.

Additionally, the settlement of 1476 is an extremely important event for all descendants I am in contact with. Another important event is the Otkup. I plan to insert a photo of that monument with an explanation. They may not be important to someone who has vacationed there for 20 years or moved there as a refugee from the 1991 war. I could under your perspective if this is your link to Olib.

@Drmies and @Иованъ and @Boba 99 , you sound like the same person. Please correct me if I’m wrong. If you could tell me about your interest in Olib and why you are insistent in using your photo for the infobox, it would help me understand your insistence and perspective greatly. I hope we can work together to come to a reasonable and fair solution. Thank you! Best regards, Ms. Matija Mosunic aka Matijaolib

PS @Boba 99 , do you live in Olib now? I was there in July and the dvor of my family is in the Južna Bonda.I plan to be there next summer. I hope we can meet. Matijaolib (talk) 04:49, 23 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Matijaolib: They're not, and neither am I. And my point of view is identical to theirs: Readers who are unfamiliar with the area - i.e. the overwhelming majority of them - are more likely to prefer the panoramic shot of the town as it's more illustrative of the subject than what otherwise looks to them like a random dock. For what it is worth, I'm fully on board with the gallery Иованъ threw together. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v threads critiques 05:00, 23 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You have more experience with Wikipedia disputes than I do, User:Jéské Couriano, so I’ll defer to you. The photo posted by Boba 99 is pixilated when I see it on my 16” laptop and in the Google search for Olib, Croatia. I’ll try to find a better photo of the town and port. If you have a sharper photo to upload and post, that would be welcome as well, @Boba 99, @Drmies, @Иованъ Matijaolib (talk) 05:25, 23 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Matijaolib, who your ancestors are is not very relevant in the matter of deciding whether a picture of a dock is more appropriate in this article than a picture of the town. And then there is this--"I am reaching out to the editors and owners of that photo to reach out to me to discuss our disagreement about the infobox. I would welcome a discussion with you." Well, before you welcomed that discussion you first continued edit warring. Drmies (talk) 12:54, 23 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Just in case you missed it, I already placed the Banjve port photo in the new gallery section at the bottom of the article. Ⰻⱁⰲⰰⱀⱏ (ⰳⰾ) 13:01, 23 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I have a question for @Drmies: @Jéské Couriano: @Иованъ: @Daniel Case:

I am new at edit wars, so please forgive if I am asking foolish questions. In this dispute about which picture will end up in the infobox, all the arguments for the File:Olib3.jpg made by user Matijaolib, as you can see above, have been refuted. The only argument that has not been refuted is the one concerning the quality of the File:Olib (village seen from NW).jpg photo, although the difference is not very big: 2,272 × 1,704 pixels against 2,000 × 1,500 pixels. I would also add that the File:Olib3.jpg is outdated. Since this photo was taken, the port has been renovated. The piers and the coast near them have been cemented.

Now, my question is: If all arguments for the Olib3 photo have been refuted (except one that I find pretty weak) why is it still in the infobox? Is it because of its quality or is there another reason? Cheers!--Boba 99 (talk) 15:29, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Boba 99: It's because the page is presently full-protected due to edit-warring. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v threads critiques 15:32, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Consensus is now in favour of your proposal, but the image can only be changed by an administrator because someone placed a protection notice on the page. The protection expires in 2 days, after which you could do it yourself. If you live on Olib or are going there any time soon, I would appreciate any photos of any of the below-listed monuments you could upload to Commons. Ⰻⱁⰲⰰⱀⱏ (ⰳⰾ) 15:32, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have now unprotected. Daniel Case (talk) 18:02, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Photo request

[edit]

@Matijaolib, @Boba 99. If either of you are going to be on Olib any time soon, I could use photographs of the following to help illustrate the article, which I am in the process of expanding:

Wow! Very impressive.
Can i ask where did you get all this info?
I could take photos of some of these places, but as you can read in my post above I am not sure in the quality of my photos.
I must add that the photos of the ponikves, peaks, pits and caves, would not be very useful since the majority of Olib is under shrouds so this formations are not very visible, let alone on a photo.
Cheers! Boba 99 (talk) 15:34, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! A month ago, the Državna geodetska uprava finally released their LiDAR map on Geoportal. If you want to see it, go to the left sidebar. Click "Sadržaj", and at the bottom left click "Isključi sve slojeve". Then go back to the left sidebar, clicking "Osnovni slojevi". Scroll down to "Crno bijela". At the bottom of the panel, uncheck "More". Enjoy! Other important layers include the topographic map "1:25 000" (TK25) and "Hrvatska osnovna karta" (HOK), if you want toponyms.
Yeah, many of these features are either too shallow to capture without a drone (or even with a drone), while others are rather inaccessible. Because LiDAR can "see through trees", I believe my co-author and I found a few pits/caves and other interesting features that would have only been known to a few inhabitants of the island, ever. So think of pictures of the minor features as something to try out if you're feeling adventurous. A geocaching type activity, if you will.
Judging from the DOF imagery, a few that certainly won't disappoint include the lokva at Vrunjke (44°21′05″N 14°48′16″E / 44.3513°N 14.80458°E / 44.3513; 14.80458) and whatever 44°23′52″N 14°48′03″E / 44.39778°N 14.80072°E / 44.39778; 14.80072 is. If you're ever interested in planning a hike to a few of them, I can map a route that "kills two birds with one stone" and send it to you. Ⰻⱁⰲⰰⱀⱏ (ⰳⰾ) 16:15, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. After accumulating such a massive bibliography for such a small island, I've decided to split the article into Olib (island), Flora of Olib, Olib (town), History of Olib, Demography of Olib, Olib dialect, Olib parish, Olib bibliography and probably a few more. Ⰻⱁⰲⰰⱀⱏ (ⰳⰾ) 16:18, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Once again I am very impressed.
I do not live in Olib but i visit the island regularly. Next time I visit I will take some photos of some of these subjects you listed and maybe if I have time (and feel adventurous as you said) I could try to find the lokva and the other place you gave coordinates for.
Good luck with with the new articles you are preparing. Will keep an eye on new developments and contribute if I see I could help.
Cheers! Boba 99 (talk) 14:34, 25 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
