Live Performances
[edit]Can someone clean up the Live Performances section? It's borderline incomprehensible. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.27.250.171 (talk) 17:16, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
Blades of Glory
[edit]Is anybody willing to clean up the Blades of Glory references? It's mentioned no less than 4 times in the article currently. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SilentStryk07 (talk • contribs) 18:36, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
Song meaning
[edit]I've seen some articles around Google that mentioned the line "that shit Kray" doesn't mean "crazy", it's actually a reference to the Kray twins. I added a {{cn}} template. All the articles I looked up were either a forum or a unreliable source. If anyone can find a reliable secondary source, that would be great. -- Luke (Talk) 05:33, 20 November 2011 (UTC)
- It's definitely "cray". This video proves that BeŻet (talk) 11:54, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
Industrial and noise?
[edit]Um, so how is this industrial and/or noise music? AnimalCrackerr (talk) 02:59, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
- The large amounts of white noise and distortion throughout the song (particularly after the dubstep-styled bass drop at the end) are characteristics of industrial hip hop. Patdog (talk) 11:16, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
- Ah, makes sense! I see someone edited it for "industrial hip hop" instead of simply industiral. 72.222.222.99 (talk) 19:05, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
Isn't the song name "Ni**as in Paris" officially?
[edit]On all track listings; CDs, iTunes; the song's title is listed as "Ni**as in Paris". Shouldn't we mention that's the "official" title? Kjinho (talk) 03:08, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
- WP:CENSORED. iTunes and other online/retail outlets typically do not accept profanity in titles, no matter if they are clean or explicit on the actual song. Internally, copyright agencies still claim the song as "NIGGAS IN PARIS" in their DMCA notices. Ellomate (talk) 22:59, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
Alt. Image Discussion - To use or not to use
[edit]Me and Status have run into a snag while improving the article. We are at odds whether the alternate cover for Niggas In Paris should stay or go, and we need your help in deciding. To establish a precedent, artist Kanye West has make alternate covers in the past multiple times, including projects such as My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy where he used a ballerina as an alternate artwork for his original cover art, which depicted him and a phoenix having sex. Another example is on Cold, where he has twice changed the cover art for undisclosed reasons. The first edit censored the logo of Theraflu on the bottle (making it the "milk bottle" some claim of it to be), and the second edit is of a George Condo painting. I conceded with Status that the first edit takes prominence in its appearance on the article, due to my being a gentlemen and the second edit not being used often outside of West's declaration of an "official" artwork, but this instance is different. The Pandora cover of Niggas In Paris is exactly that; an alternate cover art because of censorship. I presume that the embroidered words "NIGGAS IN PARIS" on the French flag were too much for Pandora to handle, so they used the alternate cover. Nonetheless, I believe it is notable as it shows a cover art that is indeed used by a well-known music site, for the same reason as My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and at the same behest of a music publisher. What do you think? Is its inclusion as an alternate cover art reasonable or is it too much? Ellomate (talk) 23:18, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

Background and recording

- West revealed that "Niggas in Paris" was inspired by the duality he witnessed when traveling to Paris as he cited his own examples of the hood and Hollywood, and him conversing with Karl Lagerfeld and Jay-Z during one hour. He described himself as "where art meets commercial" and made effort to dress up at fashion shows in Paris while listening to Jay-Z, concluding: "Jeezy in Paris, that's what it is."[4] West said that the song's title came about "because Niggas was in [sic] Paris", where he had an office and a small courtyard near the retailer Colette. I recommend trimming this to

- Speaking with GQ in November 2011, Jay-Z explained that the song's concept is focused on how him and West obtained their wealth rather than flaunting this at everybody. The rappers felt shocked with their impressive status and used it as a moment to question, "What are we doing here? How did we get here?"[6][7] Jay-Z acknowledges the struggle that he made it past to reach success after having known many people who failed, placing himself in an entirely different category to people's children who studied at Harvard University. I'd trim the first part to "Jay-Z has stated" and end the whole thing at 'wealth'.--Launchballer 01:20, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
Comment: I would beg to differ that it is a good idea here to keep the further comments regarding the focus of the song as they not only provide background into the topic in the overall picture, but also how it related to the rappers' status. --K. Peake 18:59, 3 July 2025 (UTC)
- he agreed and was flattered by the usage on the song. Ferrell laughed when he first listened to the song due to a surreal feel and was appreciative, attempting to film a piece for the video boards of Jay-Z and West's concerts that never materialized. He also became aware of further opportunities to be sampled within hip hop music, considering the suitability of his films like Step Brothers (2008) and Melinda and Melinda (2004).[10] In December 2013, Ferrell mentioned how he was later referenced in various hip-hop songs and "Niggas in Paris" is the only one he cannot say the title of himself, joking that he sounds "ever whiter" when referring to it as "N-words from Paris". Adds nothing. Cut.--Launchballer 01:20, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
Comment: I digress that this is useful info for readers to see what the artist thought of the sampled work. --K. Peake 18:59, 3 July 2025 (UTC)
- Incredible amounts of cruft in the second and third paragraphs. I'd cut them both down to
"Niggas in Paris" was produced by Hit-Boy, West, and Mike Dean, with additional production from Anthony Kilhoffer. The beat was made by Hit-Boy, who had met West in 2007 and Jay-Z through West, and had previously crafted several rejected beats for the project. Hit-Boy had planned on giving the beat to his associate Chilly Chill before receiving a call from Don C asking for it. The producers co-wrote the song with Jay-Z, while Reverend W. A. Donaldson received a songwriting credit as it sampled his track "Baptizing Scene" (1960), which West sampled again on "Wouldn't Leave" from his 2018 album Ye. The song also sampled a couple of excerpts from actor Will Ferrell's character Chazz Michael Michaels in the 2007 sports comedy film Blades of Glory. Parts of the song were taken from the album's sessions at the Le Meurice hotel in Paris during November 2010, while the later sessions at The Mercer Hotel were held over three weeks in 2011. During the album's sessions, West offered the beat of "Niggas in Paris" to fellow rapper and GOOD Music signee Pusha T, who rejected it as he felt it too playful for his disposition.

Composition and lyrics
[edit]- It later samples Ferrell talking about how art does not need any meaning when "it's provocative ... it gets the people going",[10][22][23] which appears in the middle of West's verse and was interpreted by Rolling Stone's Matthew Perpetua as summarizing the lyrical style of hip-hop.[16][24] The song also features samples of Donaldson's "Baptizing Scene". "Baptizing Scene" is covered in the above section and Matthew Perpetua's comments are already in the Release and reception section. I'd trim the rest to
The middle of West's verse contains a sample of Ferrell [...] going.
and add "Matthew" in the Release and reception section.--Launchballer 12:57, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
- I have removed the comments from Matthew. Although articles do allow repetion, so isnt it suitable to re mention the samples here. --K. Peake 18:59, 3 July 2025 (UTC)
- I'm actually on the fence as to whether Composition and lyrics deserves its own section per MOS:OVERSECTION, but I'll make that decision when I've seen what's left.--Launchballer 13:54, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
- There is a lot of info of the composition, also the background introduces why the sample is used this is re mentioning it in relevant context. --K. Peake 19:48, 6 July 2025 (UTC)

- It has a slow and cheerful and minimalist beat, which incorporates bounciness.[24][25][26][27] The beat is driven by[28][29] a riff of stabs of looped[19] icy synthesizers,[24][30] combined with kick drums.[23][31] This is WP:Citation overkill. Accolades
[edit]- A lot of these are nothing other than "X listed it at Y". Per WP:PROSELINE, I recommend either trimming these or merging them into one sentence at the end, e.g. "The track also appeared on year-end lists by Digital Spy (24), Consequence (13)...". I also recommend that they all be added to a table, not just the decade-end lists.--Launchballer 12:57, 1 July 2025 (UTC)

Commercial performance
[edit]- Per WP:DUE and WP:NOTSTATS, I recommend trimming everything in this section sourced entirely to the charts themselves as anything useful will already be in the Charts tables. That's most of this.--Launchballer 12:57, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
Not done removing the chart positions from prose would be unsuitable since anything in the lead should be written out, also it's common practice to summarise the key charts in prose too. --K. Peake 18:59, 3 July 2025 (UTC)
- Didn't say it should be in the lead either, and key charts are the ones that have made it out of their vendors.--Launchballer 13:54, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
- What I meant is that they were written by me in the lead because it is notable to have positions where the song charted highly. --K. Peake 19:48, 6 July 2025 (UTC)

In popular culture
[edit]- On October 18, 2011, singer Chris Brown released a freestyle over the song that features ad-libs from T-Pain.[148] The freestyle was met with a lukewarm response and the next day, an accompanying music video was released that sees Brown appearing with a werewolf masks and fangs. Wrong section; move to Cover versions and remixes.--Launchballer 12:57, 1 July 2025 (UTC)

- In April 2012, 2012–2017 French president François Hollande I don't see how 2012-2017 can be verified with two sources from 2012. Also, "... that a campaign video of Francois Hollande meeting his black, Arab, and multi-ethnic supporters was soundtracked by "Niggas in Paris"?" would make an excellent WP:DYK hook.--Launchballer 12:57, 1 July 2025 (UTC)

This goes against GACR 3b, so I can't pass this while it's there. Feel free to ask at WT:GAN if you think I'm being unreasonable.--Launchballer 13:54, 6 July 2025 (UTC)

- Ferrell's response doesn't aid reader understanding; 'person responds to request' is not noteworthy. Looking at the article now, I see that (among other things) the Commercial performance section is still full of WP:NOTSTATS and there's still the citation overkill I mentioned earlier. I'm increasingly inclined to fail this per WP:FIXLOOP.--Launchballer 12:23, 11 July 2025 (UTC)
- Launchballer I have fixed the citation problem by moving them around if you care to take another look at composition and I've now complied with your comments upon further analysis to remove the fluff regarding Ferrell, as for the commercial performance can you elaborate on what you mean; which positions should be removed from the prose? It would be unfair to fail when all I've asked for is further elaboration on points that have not usually come up in reviews of my work. --K. Peake 10:12, 13 July 2025 (UTC)
- To be fair, I can well believe this hasn't come up. I've got about 30 GAs and to say some reviewers are better than others would be the understatement of the century. That said, WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS.
- On the substantive point, which I'll try and keep as simple as I can, WP:GACR#3b requires that the article "stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail". Things like component charts and trajectories are too trivial for inclusion (songs that chart will always have trajectories and end up on component charts - I recommend reading all of WP:Record charts but especially WP:CHARTMATH and WP:CHARTTRAJ). To answer your question as to "which positions should be removed", it would be quicker for me to list the ones that should; I'll do that later.--Launchballer 13:27, 14 July 2025 (UTC)

- Launchballer I have cropped the second paragraph as one to your desires now, although I do not believe WP:INDISCRIMINATE falls under the Ferrell sample as this simply explains what led to him being sampled and his response, I cut out the fluff. --K. Peake 07:40, 11 July 2025 (UTC)

- Assuming all of this can be cited to independent sources, "Niggas in Paris" peaked at No. 5 on the 2012 Billboard Hot 100 Christmas issue, becoming Jay-Z's 11th, West's 10th, and their third collaboration to reach the top five. The song was certified diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in June 2023 for selling 10 million certified units in the US, becoming Jay-Z's first and West's second after "Stronger" (2007). In the UK, the track charted at No. 10 on the UK singles chart and No. 31 on the year-end chart, and was certified triple platinum in January 2023 by the British Phonographic Industry for selling 1,800,000 units in the country. The track also peaked at number 16 on the Canadian Hot 100 and was certified platinum by Music Canada for selling 80,000 units. In Denmark, the track peaked at No. 19 on the Danish Tracklisten Top 40 and was certified triple platinum in June 2018 for selling 270,000 units. The track also reached number 22 on the Irish Singles Chart, number 26 on the Hungarian Single Top 40, number 38 on the NZ Singles Chart, and the top 50 in the Netherlands, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, and France, ranking as the 45th biggest track of 2012 in the last of these. "Niggas in Paris" was certified double platinum by Germany's Bundesverband Musikindustrie, the Swedish Recording Industry Association, and the Australian Recording Industry Association, with the last of these being for shipments of 140,000 copies in that country. The track also received a platinum certification from Federazione Industria Musicale Italiana in November 2019 for selling 50,000 copies in Italy.--Launchballer 08:22, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
- Launchballer Thanks a lot for these comments, I have cropped this down although in the US and UK statistics I still kept achievements of the song noted independently by sources not listed in your prose, as that complies with the actual reasoning and logic used. Please let me know if any issue. --K. Peake 21:06, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
- Apologies for keeping you waiting; I had a hospital appointment that day which knocked me for six. That section is still nowhere close to compliant with any of the policies I've mentioned and as we're well into FIXLOOP territory I'm failing this. I'm very sorry.--Launchballer 17:27, 22 July 2025 (UTC)

GA renomination
[edit]I see this has been renominated for GA without fixing the issues I raised above. At time of writing, any subsequent nomination would quickfail per WP:QF#0e, as it still contains issues that have not been adequately addressed. I will leave it for another reviewer to adjudicate on whether the nomination should be quickfailed or just removed.--Launchballer 07:44, 23 July 2025 (UTC)
- Launchballer I appreciate you commenting about this as you would have not seen what I put recently, however I had posted on the other reviewer's talk page that I was considering seeking a second opinion on the last issues due to it being unclear and as a result have now re nominated the article. In this context, why would it not be acceptable? --K. Peake 20:00, 23 July 2025 (UTC)
- I did see that. I have popups enabled, so scanning contributions is trivial for me. I also asked for a second opinion, at Wikipedia talk:Good article nominations#Talk:Niggas in Paris/GA1, and got it. Not sure why the quickfail anchors don't work, but criteria 5 says "It has issues noted in a previous GA review that still have not been adequately addressed, as determined by a reviewer who has not previously reviewed the article". Also, it isn't really accurate to say these were 'the last issues', as I didn't check the lead or images or perform any spotchecks and may very well have found further issues. I'm going to head into the article myself at some point, though it won't be immediately.--Launchballer 22:15, 23 July 2025 (UTC)
- Launchballer Regarding the points still remaining though, why are you against including these stats and rankings reported by sources? Why does reliable sources writing them out not make them notable? --K. Peake 12:24, 25 July 2025 (UTC)
- Launchballer Any clarity on this question please? --K. Peake 18:56, 28 July 2025 (UTC)

- Launchballer I understand about cropping the chart positions down, however as for the 18th top 10 of Jay-Z and 10th of West is that not notable? Also, I mean stats like the Nielsen SoundScan's 200 best-selling songs one are these not notable? --K. Peake 15:58, 29 July 2025 (UTC)
- Apologies for omitting that part of the tq quote. I'm fine with the 18th of Jay-Z and 10th of West; Nielsen SoundScan is a dynamic list, so I recommend attributing.--Launchballer 17:29, 29 July 2025 (UTC)

- Launchballer So do you mean that any chart positions not sourced to independent sources, even number 19 in Denmark, should be removed? --K. Peake 09:23, 18 August 2025 (UTC)

- What does
providing the largest number of performances at a concert in Paris
mean?-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 15:10, 28 August 2025 (UTC)
- Can we flesh out
"the first nigga in Paris" with his rock star appearance.
Michael Jackson first charted a single in France in 1972. "Billie Jean" and "Thriller" both charted #1 in France in 1983. Prince charted his first single in France in 1979. "Purlple Rain" charted #1 in France in 1984 and he had 2 other top 10s in the 1980s. Kravitz charted his first single in France in 1991 and his first album in 1998. I doubt MJ was even the first N there.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 15:10, 28 August 2025 (UTC)- I know Ye can just say cray stuff. So I am not asking you to remove the content. Just summarize it in a more meaningful way.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 15:12, 28 August 2025 (UTC)
Comment: I have edited this to reflect the broader meaning of Kanye's comments, is this ok to be kept as is now? --K. Peake 16:21, 29 August 2025 (UTC)
- I guess our task is to summarize RSs and not to assess truth. It seems unlikely to me that Kravitz hung out with models on a more significant scale than Prince did, but I do concede the only time that I know that I have ever been within shouting distance of Kravitz, at least one Victoria Secret model was also within shouting distance. This was 30+ years ago at a cafe in Manhattan. I've never been anywhere near Prince (or MJ for that matter), but would imagine if I was, models would not be too far away. I guess we are just trying to make sense of Ye's statements. I guess you also have to define what a model is in this context and whether they are different than other women of above average first impression ability.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 21:29, 29 August 2025 (UTC)
- These last two issues are surprising elements of a second nomination. I am now looking back at the Talk:Niggas in Paris/GA1 review by User:Launchballer to figure out where this article is coming from.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 15:19, 28 August 2025 (UTC)
- My review didn't actually get to the lead as I have a policy of leaving it until last. Not much point trying to understand a summary until I've understood what it's supposed to summarise in my opinion. The Kravitz comment is a fairer cop; I'd personally add ', and by the success of Lenny Kravitz' to the end of the sentence beginning 'West revealed'. Also, discussion of that GA continued on the talk page.--Launchballer 15:44, 28 August 2025 (UTC)
The artwork displays the performers' names and the song's title in white letters against the colours of the French flag
seems to only describe 2/3rds of the cover art.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 16:20, 28 August 2025 (UTC)
Comment: This is all of the information available from the sources and the motif shared with "Otis" is the flag colours, I am not sure what the final 1/3 is are you referring to the shape of this cover art? --K. Peake 16:21, 29 August 2025 (UTC)
- Doesn't the final third of the artwork include the album name.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 21:36, 29 August 2025 (UTC)
- The article mentions
West's hah ad-lib
. Source mentions italicizes "Hah?!" with punctuation at least 7 times in a three paragraph stretch. The punctuation is key to understanding the dynamics of the delivery.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 17:21, 28 August 2025 (UTC)
- On the final night of the Cowboy Carter Tour at Stade de France, I was in attendance when Jay-Z performed this as a special guest. Should performances like that be listed here?-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 17:37, 28 August 2025 (UTC)
Comment: I would say yes, are you saying you are for or against before I add this one if sourceable? --K. Peake 16:21, 29 August 2025 (UTC)
- It is quite a legacy for a song to be the one (Maybe he did 2 or 3, but I remember this one and have it on my phone) that a megastar performs if he does a pop-in surprise guest appearance. Maybe he only does this in Paris. But still. When I think of Jay-Z, this is one of the two or 3 most important songs for his fans to hear (along with "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)" and "Dirt off Your Shoulder", IMO).-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 21:41, 29 August 2025 (UTC)
