World Mobile is a mobile network operator and connectivity provider based in London. The company deploys hybrid network infrastructure, combining low-altitude aerostats and ground-based mesh nodes, to deliver Internet access to rural and peri-urban regions.[1]
The company is known for its "sharing economy" model, where local business owners operate solar-powered network nodes to extend coverage.[2] In 2023, World Mobile secured licensed radio spectrum in the United States to expand its decentralized infrastructure model to rural American markets.[3]
History
[edit]World Mobile was founded with the objective of reducing the capital expenditure associated with traditional mobile network infrastructure. The company focuses on the "last mile" connectivity gap in emerging markets.[2]
Commercial launch
[edit]In May 2023, the company launched its commercial network in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The rollout utilized a network of solar-powered "AirNodes" to provide data services to the archipelago's population at rates lower than traditional providers.[4]
Expansion
[edit]- Mozambique
In October 2023, World Mobile launched its first commercial telecommunications aerostat in Mozambique. The deployment was conducted in the Limpopo Province in collaboration with Vodacom Mozambique, utilizing the operator's spectrum to test the efficacy of tethered aerostats for rural coverage.[1]
- United States
In July 2023, the company announced it had secured licensed spectrum in the United States, specifically in the states of California, New Mexico, Nevada, and Utah. The acquisition was part of a strategy to deploy its hybrid dynamic network in under-connected rural areas of the US.[3]
Technology
[edit]World Mobile operates a hybrid dynamic network that integrates aerial and terrestrial infrastructure.
Aerostats
[edit]To provide backhaul connectivity (the link between the core network and the edge), the company uses tethered aerostats that float approximately 300 metres (980 ft) above the ground. Supplied by Altaeros (an MIT spinoff), these aerostats act as autonomous floating towers, capable of broadcasting signals over a radius of up to 70 kilometres (43 mi).[5]
AirNodes
[edit]The ground network consists of solar-powered, wireless access points called "AirNodes". These devices utilize mesh networking technology to provide local Wi-Fi and cellular coverage. They are designed to be purchased and operated by local entrepreneurs, reducing the maintenance burden on the central operator.[4]
