Dr. Vijayalakshmi Ishwarappa Balekundri is an Indian paediatric cardiologist and educator, recognized as a pioneer in paediatric cardiology in Karnataka. She is the former head of paediatric cardiology at the Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, Bengaluru.

Early life and education

Dr. Balekundri was born in Belagavi, Karnataka. She was awarded the all-round best outgoing student of R. L. Science Institute, Belagavi. She pursued her MBBS, MD in General Medicine, and DM in Cardiology at Bangalore University, earning a gold medal.

Career

She became the first female cardiologist in Karnataka and was instrumental in setting up the paediatric cardiology department at Jayadeva Institute. She performed South India's first device closure procedure and has completed over 9,000 paediatric cardiac catheterizations.[1]

Dr. Balekundri served as a professor for more than four decades, teaching undergraduates, postgraduates, and fellows. She has also worked with the Medical Council of India and National Board of Examinations, and was a senate member of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.

She has authored over 166 scientific papers, including 58 international publications.[2] Her notable works include:

Professional affiliations

Dr. Balekundri was the first female president of the Cardiological Society of India – Karnataka Chapter and the Indian Academy of Echocardiography. She holds honorary fellowships including FAMS and FRCP (London). She has received honorary D.Sc. degrees in recognition of her work.

Social work

She has been an advocate against tobacco and alcohol use, authoring Kannada books and initiating awareness drives. Her campaign on pictorial warnings for tobacco resulted in policy change. A government documentary highlights her contributions.[3]
