SPECTACLE

SPECTACLE Bureau for Architecture and Urbanism Inc. (SPECTACLE) is an architecture firm in Calgary, Canada co-founded in 2013 by Philip Vandermey (born 1978, Canada) and Jessie Andjelic (born 1985, Canada).[1]

Andjelic and Vandermey met in 2005 while studying in the University of Calgary Master of Architecture program in the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape. Vandermey worked for MBAC in Calgary, Canada and as a Project Architect for Barcode Architects in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, and Andjelic worked with Sturgess Architecture in Calgary, Canada and Powerhouse Company also in Rotterdam, prior to co-founding SPECTACLE.[2]

According to their website, "SPECTACLE seeks opportunities to create works of architecture that critically examine and influence cities towards a more inclusive, dignified, sustainable, and beautiful future."[3]

In 2014, a year after devastating floods in Calgary, SPECTACLE examined the relationship between urban vision, resilience, and sustainability in a self-initiated design research project entitled Delugional Calgary. The work was presented and exhibited at the 2015 Urban Emergencies : Emergent Urbanism Conference in Cambridge, UK[4], exhibited at the 2015 Expo Milano in Italy, and featured on the cover of Canadian Architect magazine in 2017.[5]

SPECTACLE’s first built project, the Tigers Retrofit, created a series of contrasting ritualized spaces that received a Best of Canada award in 2017[6] and was published on the cover of Canadian Interior magazine in 2018.[7]

Water Whirl introduced a jimjilbang bathhouse as a machine for geopolitical reconciliation in the De-Militarized Zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea. The project won the Runner-Up prize in the BORDERS international architecture competition.[8]

The office worked with four elementary schools and an interdisciplinary design team, led by Sustainable Calgary, during the Stepping Towards a Greener Tomorrow project, also known as Kids Reimagine School Streets, to improve the joy and safety of active routes to school for children. The project won a 2024 Canadian National Urban Design Award.[9]

In 2023 Architect listed SPECTACLE as one of 15 architecture firms that are defining the future of Canadian Architecture.[10] SPECTACLE was recognized with the Emerging Talent Award by Canadian Architect magazine in 2017.[11]
