Lake Road Kitchen is a Michelin-starred restaurant located in Ambleside, Cumbria, in the Lake District, United Kingdom. It was founded in 2014 by chef James Cross, and serves set tasting menus of 5, 8 and 12 servings.[1]
History
[edit]Chef James Cross previously worked at Simpsons Restaurant in Birmingham, La Pergola in Rome and Per Se in New York before spending two years at Noma in Copenhagen[2]. After Noma he relocated to the Lake District to open Lake Road Kitchen. His aim was to establish “a humble restaurant where the food was delicious and people would come to eat”.[3]

The food is modern European with international influences[4]
Its wine list has been recognised by the AA Restaurant Guide and is featured on Star Wine List, an international guide to notable wine programmes .[5]
Reception

It also currently appears in the La Liste Top 1000 Restaurants in the World with a score of 83.[7]
The restaurant holds 3 Rosettes in the AA Restaurant Guide.[8]
Lake Road Kitchen is frequently cited as one of the best restaurants in Cumbria and the Lake District.[9]
In 2023, the restaurant was listed in "Britain’s 100 Best Local Restaurants" by The Good Food Guide, and is currently one of only 42 UK venues to receive an "Exceptional" rating from the guide.[10][11]
Harden’s 2025 restaurant guide lists it as 54th best restaurant in the UK[12] [13]
It was previously awarded Best New Restaurant in the UK by the Good Food Guide in 2015[14]
In 2016 Marina O’Loughlin awarded it 10/10 in her Guardian review[15]
In 2017 Josh Glancy awarded it 5/5 in The Sunday Times[16] It was further reviewed by the Times in 2024 [17]
The restaurant is also reference in tourism guides by Cumbria Tourism and Visit Lake District as part of the region’s Michelin-starred offering, celebrating Cumbria's rise as a top UK food destination.[18][19]
