Kisan Devta Temple is a Hindu temple located in the village of Sarai Mahesh in Patti tehsil, Pratapgarh district, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is described as the world’s first temple dedicated to farmers, where a farmer is worshipped as a divine figure.[1]The temple was established to acknowledge the role of farmers to society and to elevate agriculture as a sacred and respected profession.[2][3]

History

[edit]

The idea of the temple was conceptualized by spiritual leader Shailendra Yogiraj Sarkar. Construction began around 2015 and was completed by 2018. The temple promotes reverence for farmers through rituals, hymns, and devotional songs, including the Kisan Chalisa (a hymn in praise of farmers), composed by the founder himself.[4][5][6]

Deities and Iconography

[edit]

The temple features a 6-foot stone idol of a male farmer holding a plough, symbolising the labour and sacrifice of the agricultural community. Alongside him is the idol of Kisan Devi, the Goddess of Farmers, who is depicted in a saree patterned with the Indian tricolour. Together, they represent both masculine and feminine aspects of agricultural life.[7]

Rituals and Activities

[edit]

Daily rituals include the chanting of the Kisan Chalisa and traditional Hindu aartis. Weekly bhandaras (community meals) are organized every Monday and Wednesday, attracting local devotees. Farmers visit to pray for good harvests, protection from natural disasters, and blessings for their families.[8][9]

Community Role

[edit]

Apart from its religious significance, the temple serves a social function. It houses a charitable medical clinic for villagers and serves as a community centre for meetings, agricultural workshops, and cultural events. It is not affiliated with any particular caste or sect, and open to all.[10][11]

Recognition

[edit]

The temple has received media coverage for its unusual theme during the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, a replica of the Kisan Devta Temple was established at a dedicated pavilion to spread awareness about farmer rights and spirituality in agriculture.[12][13][14]
