Comment: I'm not seeing enough independent sources about Justin Coveney's rugby career that can give it a green light, what you can do is add more coverage from independent reliable sources that focus specifically on his career and other significant achievements rather than only on reality TV appearances, to help establish notability. Once thes issues are addressed, you may resubmit it. ThilioR O B O T🤖 talk 17:46, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
Justin Coveney, nicknamed The Flying Jeepney, is a Filipino-Australian national team rugby player,[1][2][3] lawyer,[4][5] and certified strength coach.[6][7][8]
Early life and education
[edit]Coveney was born and raised in Sydney, Australia,[8] to a Filipino-Australian family. After facing bullying at school, he joined a rugby league team at the age of 14.[9] He completed his law studies in Australia.[7][10]
Career
[edit]Coveney began his rugby career in 2010 with the Philippine National Rugby team, also known as the Volcanoes.[4][7][8][10][11]
He has participated in the 2013 Ruby World Cup Sevens, the Southeast Asian Games, and the Asian Games.[9] His achievements include winning gold medals at the 2015 and 2019 Southeast Asian Games.[11][12][13][14] He has also competed in multiple Hong Kong Sevens campaigns[15] and represented the Philippines in two Asian Games, one which was held in 2023.[7] Coveney has played professionally in Japan's Top League.[8][10]
In October 2024, he led his team to victory in the Philippine Rugby Football Union (PRFU) 7s League and was named the Most Valuable Player.[7]
Physical Asia
[edit]Coveney was one of the contestants representing the Philippines in Netflix's Physical: Asia,[16] a team initially led by boxer Manny Pacquaio. Other team members included strongest man winner Ray Jefferson Querubin, mixed martial fighter and sambist Mark "Mugen" Striegl, Olympic-level hurdler Robyn Lauren Brown, and CrossFit athlete Lara Lorraine Deang Liwanag.[2][10][17]
In the Territory Conquest challenge, Coveney suggested that his team use the rugby tactic known as the "jeepney blitz" to push their opponents off the platform.[18] The strategy involved the team huddling together and working as a unit to bulldoze through opponents. In a rematch against Team Turkey and Team Korea, Coveney proposed that Team Mongolia join forces to create a more powerful joint "jeepney blitz." Although the strategy did not result in a win, the challenge was noted for its intensity.[4]
In the Stone Totem Endurance Test, Coveney and Querubin competed in a challenge of grip and endurance. Coveney, struggling under the weight, reportedly recited the names of his wife and children for motivation before exiting the challenge after 9 minutes and 42 seconds.[17]
He assumed the role of team captain after Pacquiao's departure midway through the competition[19] due to other obligations[20] and was replaced by CrossFit athlete Justin Hernandez.[2][21]
Personal life
[edit]Coveney is married to his wife Hadassah. They have three children: Jaxson Maddox and twins Cillian Hunter and Solana Catalina.[9][10][22]
