Jeanette Karen Rowley (born 1962) is a British animal rights activist and vegan critical legal scholar. She is noted[1] for educating the vegan community about their legal rights and coining the idea of vegan jurisprudence. She has acted as amicus curiae and witness in legal cases that centre on vegan rights, including the British employment tribunal that confirmed ethical veganism as a protected philosophical belief for the purposes of the Equality Act 2010.[2] Rowley founded the campaign for vegan rights and The International Vegan Rights Alliance in 2012.[3] She also founded The Vegan Society’s International Rights Network[4] and is an independent consultant to The Vegan Society.[5][6]

Career

[edit]

Rowley obtained a PhD in Law at The University of Lancaster in 2017[7] specialising in veganism and human rights law.

Rowley has presented her work on veganism and law at a number of academic and policy conferences. In 2012, Rowley was a speaker at the 5th Equality, Diversity and Inclusion International Conference, in Toulouse, France[8] where she presented her argument that veganism was relevant to the principles of equality and inclusion. Also in 2012, she presented her proposal that vegans should defend their rights to live with compassion as a measure to support the campaign for animal rights at the International Animal Rights Conference, Luxembourg.[9] Rowley has been a speaker on vegan rights at various events since 2012 including at Vegfest in 2013.[10]

Rowley has contributed to legal cases involving vegan rights in a number of jurisdictions. In the United Kingdom she provided consultation and served as an expert witness in the employment tribunal of Jordi Casamitjana,[11][12][13] which resulted in the legal recognition of ethical veganism as a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010. Rowley has been appointed witness, and granted leave to submit amicus curiae briefs in vegan rights cases, including in Peru,[14][15] Norway,[16] and Canada.[17] Media reports indicate that Rowley is regularly consulted to support vegan complainants.[18][19][20]

Reception

[edit]

Rowley's work has been well-received and commented on by prominent figures in the vegan community, including, amongst others, Oscar Horta.[29]

Writing for Bloomsbury Publishers, sociologist Richard Twine states that “[t]o read [Rowley’s publication] Law and Veganism … is to glimpse the preliminary and necessary unravelling of our anthropocentric cultures of animal consumption.”[30]

Writing for Bloomsbury Publishers, Gary L. Francione, Board of Governors Distinguished Professor of Law and Katzenbach Scholar of Law and Philosophy, Emeritus Rutgers University, and well known for his abolitionist theory of animal rights, commended Rowley’s efforts to ensure that the rights of vegans are protected.[31]

Rowley has also been interviewed multiple times by registered charity radio CKCU. In an interview on October 2019 on CKCU FM’s Always for Animal Rights, Rowley was asked about her legal strategy for protecting vegans’ rights and the ethical foundations of veganism within the framework of human rights law.[32]

Rowley has also been interviewed about her work on mainstream media, LBC News.[33]
