Editing to the Beat Miami

Sorry for the massive tag, but I have huge news! At the end of next month, there will (finally) be an edit-a-thon dedicated to Latin music in Miami! You can details about the event here. Do not worry if you cannot attend physically, your input on how to improve the event such as finding potential partners or adding topics to the list of potential articles would be most welcomed! Please ping me or @Oscar .: if you have any questions. Erick (talk) 23:14, 15 July 2025 (UTC)
- This is sweet, hopefully those who cannot attend physically can still be a part of this event virtually and help out with the articles needing improvements. – jona ✉ 11:15, 16 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the ping @Magiciandude. We're looking to build out a new task list. Last time I put this one together, but there's room to expand, Latin music is a broad field. This time, I want to focus on fair en.wiki articles that don’t have Spanish counterparts, so we can translate them, and also improve those tagged with maintenance issues or lacking sources. Suggestions are very welcome, Oscar_. (talk) 02:51, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
- For finding articles that exist in English but not Spanish, I'd recommend the tool not-in-the-other-language
.toolforge . For example, here is a search for articles in Category:Colombian musicians that don't exist in Spanish. GanzKnusper (talk) 19:08, 17 July 2025 (UTC).org - I also have another suggestion for a task, slightly different. The background is: in Argentina, photographs are only in copyright for 20 years after publication (and for 25 years after creation). This means that photos published first in Argentina before 1971 or in 1996–1999 are public domain in AR and US, and therefore eligible for commons. (The gap from 1971 to 1995 is due to the URAA. The relevant license template is Commons:Template:PD-AR-Photo.) I fairly often read about Colombian musicians touring in Argentina and I think there must be photos out there, but I wouldn't know where to start looking! Maybe someone else would know: newspapers, magazines, something else? GanzKnusper (talk) 19:11, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hey there @Magiciandude, thanks for the ping, and sorry for taking a while to reply, I was busy with WikiCon Brasil 2025. When you speak of potential partners, do you mean WMF affiliates, or possible sponsors? Victor Lopes Fala!•C 23:15, 22 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Victor Lopes Thanks for the replay Victor! I meant the latter (me, Oscar, and other Wikimedians have already sent e-mails to potential sponsors), we already have Wikimedia NYC helping out, but if Wikimedia Brasil could help out, that would be great as well! Erick (talk) 23:49, 22 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, @Magiciandude Thank you very much for inviting me. I will be participating in the edit-a-thon remotely and hope to contribute to the expansion of our beloved Latin music on Wikipedia! Mtvdanilo (talk) 15:46, 23 July 2025 (UTC)
Vallenato musicians navbox
[edit]I've recently been adding entries to the navbox at template:Vallenato musicians, but with a sense of unease, because I don't actually think it's a good idea (for a few reasons) to have navboxes of artists/musicians defined by genre. It is the only one that I know of.
However, I do like having a navbox related to vallenato. I propose making one for the Vallenato Legend Festival, with a focus on the explicit group of reyes vallenatos, which is the name given to winners of the Festival's professional accordionist competition, by far the most prestigious award at the Festival. I've made an example navbox at User:GanzKnusper/alternative vallenato template. It is somewhat on the model of prize winner navboxes like Template:Edison Award, and less so on festival navboxes like Template:Glastonbury Festival.
Before I nominate {{Vallenato musicians}} for deletion and create {{Vallenato Legend Festival}}, I'd like to know of any opinions here. Is this a reasonable/bad idea? I don't believe that the change would create any orphans, but it would definitely and unfortunately make some articles less well-connected. GanzKnusper (talk) 09:12, 28 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @GanzKnusper! I think a List of vallenato musicians would be better than a template of vallenato musicians. Maybe change "Vallenato kings" to "Key figures of vallenato"? Erick (talk) 16:07, 28 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Magiciandude:Thanks, I also agree that a list article would be better. Though I don't have the inclination to make it!
- "Vallenato kings" is just a direct translation of the rey vallenato title which is what the winners of the accordionist competition of the Vallenato Legend Festival are called (see for example this list from El Tiempo). So it's more like a list of prize winners -- unambiguous and verifiable, and therefore in my opinion more suitable for a navbox -- than a list of important figures. In fact some of them like Miguel López aren't all that important. GanzKnusper (talk) 16:28, 28 July 2025 (UTC)
- Gotcha, I would mention it a footnote somewhere so that editors don't get confused on why only those artists are mentioned. Erick (talk) 16:29, 28 July 2025 (UTC)
- Noted, thanks! GanzKnusper (talk) 16:40, 28 July 2025 (UTC)

Women in Latin music taskforce proposal
[edit]A few months ago, @SunriseInBrooklyn:, created WikiProject Women in Latin music, which was deleted due to a lack of consensus. I opposed the deletion, but I think the scope might work better as a taskforce. I would like to see if I can get consensus to create a task force dedicated to women in Latin music. @AJona1992:, @AlexanderShakifan29:, @Jaespinoza:, @Victor Lopes:, @JeanetteMartin:, @Mauri96:, @Key limes:, @Cambalachero:, @Bryan McLaude:, @Swe97:, @Sebitagermanotta:, @Jaliscan:, @FanDePopLatino:, @PaulYordan:, @JuliánLeiva66:, @DiegoF 1996:, @Didarrius:, @Mtvdanilo:, @Rangel's Version:, @GanzKnusper:, @Curiosidadetp1:, @Oscar .:. I apologize for the mass ping, but I thought this task force would be a good idea. Erick (talk) 20:14, 26 October 2025 (UTC)
- It seems totally doable to me, I think I’ve seen some task lists that could be used in the WikiProject Women in Red, Oscar_. (talk) 23:33, 26 October 2025 (UTC)
- I agree, many taskforce aims are to work on a set sublist, and women in Latin music is a very logical scope for that. Good idea. Kingsif (talk) 00:55, 27 October 2025 (UTC)
- Sounds good to me! Victor Lopes Fala!•C 14:35, 27 October 2025 (UTC)
- (Came here from a notification at WikiProject Women in Red.) This sounds like a good idea should work well as a taskforce. GothicGolem29 (talk) 16:22, 27 October 2025 (UTC)
- Lemme know I can help! 💪🏻😁 Bryan McLaude (talk) 01:01, 28 October 2025 (UTC)
- I’d be happy to help with articles about Latin music female artists. --Didarrius (talk) 17:34, 28 October 2025 (UTC)
- Good idea, I'd support this. GanzKnusper (talk) 08:22, 29 October 2025 (UTC)
- I'm a quite a bit busier than in years past, but I'll be happy to pitch in when and where I can, especially with articles and lists pertaining to Peruvian acts and South America more broadly. Mauri96 (talk) 15:10, 31 October 2025 (UTC)
- I agree to the task force. – jona ✉ 18:52, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
Great news!! Women in Latin music has been created! Thanks to those who particpated!! @Oscar .:, @Victor Lopes:, @Bryan McLaude:, @GothicGolem29:, @Didarrius:, @GanzKnusper:, @Mauri96:, @AJona1992:, @Kingsif: sorry for the mass ping, I just need one more consensus and that is to have a bot tag articles listed under Women in Latin music. Erick (talk) 21:27, 12 November 2025 (UTC)
- No objections. Victor Lopes Fala!•C 20:45, 13 November 2025 (UTC)
- I agree to having the bot tag articles. GanzKnusper (talk) 09:29, 14 November 2025 (UTC)
- I also don't have objections. By the way, do we know if they can have a similar tagging bot for the Spanish Wiki? Thanks, Oscar_. (talk) 16:11, 14 November 2025 (UTC)
