'Research'

[edit]

Tartaluca, have you read WP:NOTALAB? You probably should, as your mass-posting of research-related questions on contributor's talk pages might be seen as questionable. More so since you appear not to have made any attempt at preserving anonymity, as such research would normally expect.AndyTheGrump (talk) 15:47, 11 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I’m going to add on to this, because the mass-posting is really not so “mass” as of right now, it’s actually very limited. Can you go into detail (a high level of detail) about how you chose which editors to request responses from? Mikewem (talk) 16:34, 11 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Answering Teahouse survey

[edit]

Your question may not fit into what The Teahouse is for, so I am answering here. When I was a girl I wanted to grow up and earn my living by writing. I was not able to do that, but being a volunteer Wikipedia editor gives me the ability to spread knowledge, and help others who are interested in subjects that interest me enough to put the time and effort into either a) improving existing articles or, occasionally b) writing new well-researched articles on topics that meet the Wikipedia requirements for being noteworthy, but no one else has written about.

  1. What I Think and Feel is there is need for access to well researched information on a certain topic.
  2. What I Do is hunt up the reliable facts, organize them, and write in my own words. (Copying and pasting from online sources is plagiarism, and that’s illegal.)
  3. What I See is what I've written, as I proofread and rewrite to improve my sentences, for both clarity and readability.
  4. My Pains (her pains, not all editors are male) is the effort it often takes to find information not readily available. Sometimes there is the "pain" of expense, for I've purchased reference books on classic American children's literature (series novels and magazines) for that is my "hobby subject" that I research regularly.
  5. What I Gain (she gains) is knowing that I've written something that will help, or at least entertain, readers in the English-speaking world interested in what I'm interested in. My beliefs are that we are not just put on this earth to better ourselves, but we are to help others, and to use the gifts we have been given. I was given the gift of writing, and have an obligation to share that gift. (In the Bible Jesus tells a parable about the Master getting angry at the Servant who buried the talents he'd been given. I've pondered why that was recorded forever in the Bible, and came to the conclusion that, just because I'm not getting published in paying markets, I'm to use the gifts I've been given.) It is a Gain to me that the articles I've had published in print newspapers and magazines have a limited "shelf life" as the few people who read them throw them away and forget what I've written, but being a Wikipedia editor gives me the gift of having my work remain online and available as long as Wikipedia continues to exist. (Some Wikipedia work gets deleted by other editors for not being notable, or being promotional, but as long as I follow the guidelines my work will be safe for future readers.)

I write about what I have an interest in, so the work is satisfying. I hope this meets your survey requirements. Karenthewriter (talk) 16:00, 11 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Response

[edit]

Thank you for your invitation to a survey.

(1) Because editors here work anonymously, and thinking and feeling are private responses, I cannot help you there. There are so many individual reasons for contributing here, and so many types of contributors. I have heard that most members of Wikipedia either contribute occasionally or not at all. Most of the regular, prolific contributors do administrative and copyediting work on content created by others, because that is an important skill that they have. The minority of regular contributors are content providers, that is, they create or expand full articles, or stub (partial) articles. The rules about these contributions are directed towards a professional standard of output, and of course compliance with international laws. So in general I would expect regular contributors to have the same thoughts and feelings as any full-time or part-time professional workers.

(2) This is a place of work, so most regular editors only say and do things related to work. As in all workplaces, cooperation with others is an important element, as is learning to improve one's output. It is possible to learn new things about our job every day, here.

(3) As in any place of work, the only way to hear and see what is going on, is to be open to it, i.e. be prepared to listen and act accordingly. If one is corrected for an error, one should learn from that. If one repeatedly ignores corrections, then one can be blocked from editing (depending on the type of error). I note that you have been corrected for mass posting. Have you learned from that?

(4) There are certainly bullies here, who attempt to disrupt the editing process on an article, because they wish to stamp their opinion on the article. However, including an editor's personal opinion in an article is considered unprofessional here - only quoted and cited opinions are permitted, and of course cited facts. It can be difficult to deal with bullies.

(5) An editor's gains depend on the editor. Broadly speaking, what you give is what you get. If you produce a lot of useful work, you will see an improved Wikipedia. As in any workplace, one should not expect thanks - if thanks happen, that is a bonus.

I should add that you learn by doing, here. If you really want to know what it is like to work here, you should contribute to Wikipedia yourself. Storye book (talk) 10:12, 12 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Answers to your survey!

[edit]

Your survey is really interesting, so here's my answers.

1. It really depends on the editor and who they are. Personally, I usually think about what would be best to help the encyclopedia, but while remembering there are constraints I have to follow. For what I feel, it might be a sense of accomplishment to knowing that I am able to contribute to Wikipedia.

2. What an editor says and does depends on the situation. Usually what I say is discussing how to improve an article, discussing an issue with Wikipedia, or user behavior. But then again, it depends on the editor.

3. As an editor you see many things and hear many things. Discussions, sometimes conflicts about editing, or something else. It's hard to name something specific, as there is always so much.

4. Feeling like you messed up, you acted in bad faith, you messed up an article, and being so afraid to be bold. But, thankfully there are so many experienced users that are willing to help out a newbie, and assume good faith.

5. Personally, it has to be making a worthwhile edit. Helping the encyclopedia is just a gain all on its own.

If you need me to specify anything, just ask. Happy editing! TheClocksAlwaysTurn (The Clockworks) (contribs) 19:59, 12 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
