Question from Lewis 2025 (10:17, 19 August 2025)

[edit]

Hi there! I was curious about the way translations work on Wikipedia. If a brand page exists in Dutch, and we want to add more languages, what is the best way to proceed? Should we edit the existing page to make it English and then work on the translations later? Or keep that page and make a fresh one for English? And how do we add translations of pages?

Thank you for the information! --Lewis 2025 (talk) 10:17, 19 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Lewis 2025 Different language Wikipedias each have their own distinct policies and guidelines, so you should check how to proceed on both the target language Wikipedia. In this case, if you're translating to English Wikipedia, you can look at the following link: WP:TRANSLATETOHERE.
Also, if an article exists in one language, that does not automatically mean that the article is notable in a different language, as each version has differing notability and content guidelines. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 13:52, 22 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Filmographyview (11:50, 21 August 2025)

[edit]

Hello. I appreciate being assigned a mentor, and any help you can provide. I'm a college professor, and my students interviewed leading experts on a range of topics and created a website to share that information. Over the years, students created 120+ projects, and I thought that 6 of them contained such interesting interview videos from the experts that adding them to Wikipedia would be beneficial to readers. I never edited Wikipedia before and I added information and/or citations to Wikipedia this week, but 5 of my 6 edits were rejected so far. For example, my students interviewed Jack Epps, Jr., co-screenwriter of Top Gun, who told my students why he made the decision to have Goose die in the film. The video of him telling this story is incredibly interesting, so I thought adding a short sentence and a citation to the webpage that contains that video to Wikpedia would be very helpful to readers. Similarly, I think interview videos of other key players from three films and a video game would be very interesting to readers, so I made edits and/or added a citation for those Wikipedia articles. I would greatly appreciate your advice on how to add this information properly. I think where I may have gone wrong relates to this statement on Beetstra's talk page: "If the link contains information, use the information to add content to the article, and use the link as a reference." Being a first time editor, I think I was tentative and just added a citation sometimes and a few words and a citation at other times. It seems I should have written more about the interesting content I was attempting to share. I would appreciate your guidance on how to do this properly. Thanks! --Filmographyview (talk) 11:50, 21 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Filmographyview Speaking about oneself is generally okay for reliability purposes (WP:ABOUTSELF). I think the issue Beetstra had was that you were citing your own website, which may or may not be reliable. It would probably be best to cite the original interview, and if possible, to cite a more reputable source (for example, if the writers gave the same information in a different interview with a reliable newspaper). Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 00:50, 24 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your note. Editor Beetstra recommended that instead of adding changes myself, I propose changes to the Wikipedia editors via the relevant Talk page and let them make the decision. I did that this morning, proposing additions to The Book of Life (film) entry and the Ready Player One (film) entry, and proposing two alternative citation options. I hope those proposals clarify the situations and are acceptable. Thanks again. Filmographyview (talk) 11:10, 29 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Ashish Shukla delhi (11:29, 23 August 2025)

[edit]

Hi, I published on article about Abhishek goswami, he is small artist i thought wikipedia might be help him, as he is good artist and filmmaker. but article got rejected rejected, honestly i am not a good writer so took help from chatgpt, secondary i am really new here so edit tab opeining a form which i am unable to understand. can you please guide. --Ashish Shukla delhi (talk) 11:29, 23 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ashish Shukla delhi one of the requirements to contribute to the English Wikipedia is a good understanding of English, so please do learn English. ChatGPT is strongly discouraged in writing articles as it can be hard for it to cite high quality sources as we require to ensure verifiability.
Apart from that, you can also contribute to your native language Wikipedia, see List of Wikipedias. Note that different language Wikipedias have different policies and guidelines so the process to write a new article is probably different than ours. Question from Madam Tonateni on Minority language (17:51, 23 August 2025)

[edit]

Hello, how can I make references to the article, and where can I find suitable references to it? --Madam Tonateni (talk) 17:51, 23 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Madam Tonateni To determine whether a reference is suitable, you can follow the guideline at WP:GNG. Some places you can look include Google, your local library, or Google Scholar. To add the reference after you have found the source, see WP:INTREF. If you have any questions about the information pages I've linked, please feel free to ask.
By the way, looking at your edit history at Special:Contributions/Madam Tonateni, you should understand that we are writing an encyclopedia together. This implies many general guidelines to follow. For example in this edit, there are quite a few fluff sentences, like the paragraph starting with The hospital is also advancing technologically and clinically. The backup for how it's advancing is quite vague and would appreciate the addition of more detail.
Also, it's strongly discouraged to use AI in writing articles, as it can hallucinate and/or cite unreliable sources, which hurts our verifiability. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 01:04, 24 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from FergusArgyll (12:35, 27 August 2025)

[edit]

This is a general question but I'll use a specific case.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal_shock lists a few examples at the bottom, the second one is ice cubes. It is plainly obvious it is true but of course I'd rather source it than not! The problem is that a real RS (scientific paper etc.) don't discuss specifically placing an ice cube in a cup of warm water - that would be trivial - but there is a paper (https://phys.unsw.edu.au/music/people/publications/Kingetal1976a.pdf) which conducted experiments on e.g. what temps, size of ice etc etc.

Should I just use that as a source (because the implicit assumption of the paper is that ice cracks because of thermal shock)? or should I just use some SEO blog type article? or neither?

Thanks --FergusArgyll (talk) 12:35, 27 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

FergusArgyll in this case I would use the paper, as it's better than nothing. Spammy articles aren't reliable and should never be cited anyways. If it's fundamental information you might be able to find it in a textbook or survey paper? Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 16:39, 27 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nice to meet you for the first time! How do I make sure an edit I make isn’t unnecessary or trimming a wiki page too much? Still want to keep the info without it sounding too different. --“coachella sucks this year.” - Eric Andre (talk) 17:59, 29 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

RustingMAAN I'm not quite sure what you mean, and I suspect the answer to your question would really be a case-by-case analysis. If I were you, I would just make the edit boldly - if someone later reverts you, then you can ask them why they thought it was a poor edit. If you want to, you can also tell me a bit more about the edit you're planning to make, and I can take a look at the situation. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 19:33, 29 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Lord Nweke Tochukwu Dominic I'm assuming you're doing this to promote yourself. Wikipedia is not a place to promote yourself, and promotional content is unacceptable for an encyclopedia - so in short, you're likely barking up the wrong tree if you want to create an autobiographical Wikipedia article. Nevertheless, if you would still want to continue despite my warning, please read the your first article page for detailed instructions on drafting your first Wikipedia article. Question from BeefnotRibs (00:15, 1 September 2025)

[edit]

Hi! I've always wanted to do this kind of research and stuff but I have no idea where to find the actual source material. The books you get the knowledge from, the studies you read and everything else. I just edited a post about an Indian freedom fighter, and I couldn't make it as long as I wanted it to be because my only source of information is the internet. Thanks! I'm in highschool by the way, so please be kind! --BeefnotRibs (talk) 00:15, 1 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

BeefnotRibs Even if we're limiting ourselves to just online material, there are still plenty of reliable sources that can be found. News articles by reputable publishers, as well as newspaper archives and academic databases are all great starting points. There is also the page Help:Find sources which you can look at for how to find sources.
Also, I'm not quite sure what your source of information for your edit to Motilal Verma was, since you didn't cite any sources. this page can give you a good introduction to citing sources. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 01:38, 1 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

How do I create a new definition --Spagettimans (talk) 23:10, 3 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Spagettimans if you mean a dictionary definition, you might want to check out Wiktionary. I'm not sure what their guidelines are on adding a new definition, but that is there for you to check out. If you meant to create a new article, the process is quite difficult and I would not recommend for you to jump straight into article creation, but if you still want to try, you can check out the Your First Article page for steps on how to continue. Question from Mac Edmunds (13:17, 5 September 2025)

[edit]
Note: Mac Edmunds's mentor Pickersgill-Cunliffe is away.

Hi. Sometimes when I edit a page, instead of saying “your edit was published” it was “page restored”. Why is this? Restored sounds like it reverts some previous edit, but every time it happens I look through the page, and my previous edits are still there, untouched. TIA. --Mac Edmunds (talk) 13:17, 5 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Mac Edmunds I'm not quite sure why this happens, but as long as in the edit history tab everything seems okay, this shouldn't be anything beyond a visual bug. The folks at MediaWiki might have a better idea at what is going on. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 02:15, 7 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Facing Confrontation From Another User

[edit]

Hi! I recently made an edit based on the citations provided by someone else. The information conveyed on the wiki page was clearly incorrect. However, another user reverted the changes i made and made a threat about reporting me as being "disruptive." I then attempted to engage in a "chat" with them explaining my reasoning for making the changes and providing additional citations that support the change that i was making. However, they quickly turned accusative and dismissive. I'm not to sure about how to deal with such people; I'm only trying to make the wiki accurately reflect the evidence that is provided. I searched for how to go about arbitrating and have posted the following on the 3rd party dispute resolution board:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Dispute_resolution_noticeboard#Vedanta

My chat with the individual is at the following: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:TheCitationist#c-TheCitationist-20250912042000-Joshua_Jonathan-20250912041300

I've also looked at the following: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Dispute_resolution/Draft#:~:text=dispute%20or%20issue.-,Ask%20for%20a%20third%20opinion,editors%20familiar%20with%20similar%20disputes:

I'm not sure if i'm taking the right steps here as this is all very new to me. Can you please help me by guiding me in the right direction. Thanks for your time. TheCitationist (talk) 06:59, 13 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from RS-starsick (02:08, 15 September 2025)

[edit]

Hello! I wanted to know if there were any specific guidelines regarding tone - a large part of why I made this account was to edit what I thought might be unprofessional tone on a few pages, but I didn't want to jump into anything without having good grounds to compare it to. Thanks! --RS-starsick (talk) 02:08, 15 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

RS-starsick WP:TONE might be relevant? As a rule of thumb you would want to stick to whatever tone you might see in an encyclopedia/reference article, informative and dispassionate. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 02:25, 15 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! This was very helpful.
As a follow up, the article in particular I'm currently trying to edit is Lady Byron. A lot of it is unsourced and what appears to be the basis for much of the article appears to be a Wall Street Journal review of a recently written biography (though to be fair, I have not read the biography myself yet). Is there a certain method to finding more reliable sources you might recommend? What is the bar for reliable sources in biography articles? RS-starsick (talk) 21:51, 15 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
RS-starsick one tool I like to use is Wikipedia Reference Search which filters Google results to ones more likely to be reliable. You can also search on Google Scholar, Google Books or through academic databases. (There is one for Wikipedia editors called The Wikipedia Library but there are edit requirements you don't meet yet).
The definition and standards for reliable sources in general is Wikipedia:Reliable sources. For Biographies of Living Persons there is a slightly higher standard due to the potential to add libellous content to a person's Wikipedia page but Lady Byron is long deceased so it shouldn't be as much of an issue. [edit]

Hi Mentor,

On the Homo Sapiens page, it says modern Homo Sapiens emerged around "300,000 years ago in Africa" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human) but I just read a new article by the BBC in which a research team found a Homo Sapien Skull in modern day China around 1 million years ago (https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cdx01ve5151o). The article states that there is still on going analysis about the timing. In this case, would the best course of action be to post a comment on the discussion of the page? --WikiContributerD (talk) 23:05, 25 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

WikiContributerD the article also says there is not enough evidence to show it is really 1 million years, so it's probably not worth adding (yet). It might be a good idea to look into the exact research paper that was published. If this view is shared by many scientists in the field, it would be worth including in the article. (See WP:FRINGE).
