Illegitimate blanking
[edit]
Hello, I'm Ecourter. I noticed that you recently removed content from Internet privacy without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored. If you would like to experiment, please use your sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. Reliable sourcing, Manual of Style, and more
[edit]Hello, and thank you for contributing to Wikipedia. I've reverted the edit you made to Internet privacy for several reasons:
- First, you have primarily cited blogs and advocacy groups, none of which are reliable sources. Just because something is on the internet doesn't mean it's trustworthy, unbiased, or considered reliable for Wikipedia use. Since this is a well-researched topic, you're much better off trying to find journal articles or books, many of which you have access to through your school library system.
- The next issue is the use of vague phrasing, such as
showing the ways in which the internet traffic analysis both enhances security while also endangering privacy
, which does not tell the reader anything since you have not explained why this is the case. - You have also used second-person pronouns (you, your, our, etc.) several times in your edit; statements like
Being that we are in the age of social media, these social networks play a major role in reducing our online privacy...
,sometimes even your deleted posts can remain stored on servers or shared across other apps...
are unencyclopedic since articles are not supposed to directly address the reader. This is a good writing tip in general; you're likely to run into problems if you use excessive second-person language even on non-Wikipedia assignments. - I see you have cited a Pew Research poll, which is fine, but the original research following it (
The research gives details on how many people believe that companies will collect their data no matter the choices that they make. Basically implying that privacy is no longer seen by Americans as something that is in their control. This resignation adds on to the declining engagement with privacy settings and policy reviews. There is a big gap between consumer expectations and the expanding scale of corporate data practices.
) is not, since everything you say must be cited to reliable sources, and you are not allowed to perform independent analyses of the content you cite. - The section on "Hacking and Cybercrime" in off-topic since it does not address the topic of internet privacy, which the article is about.
The economic and emotional impact of cybercrime can be severe although it is not spoken about a lot
, again, is original research. Additionally, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement is not the best example to use for a law enforcement agency that prioritizes cybercrime investigations.
Anyway, I hope you find this helpful, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask me or at the Teahouse. Children Will Listen (đ talk, đ« contribs) 17:36, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
- Hi, thank you again for the detailed feedback,I appreciate you taking the time to explain everything. The edits I made were meant to help reorganize the article and break up sections that felt overly long or disconnected.
- Before your revert, I had already restructured multiple paragraphs and added new material, so when the full section was removed, it wiped out a significant amount of work I had done. Because of that, Iâd like to temporarily restore my edits so I can continue improving and revising them with your feedback in mind.
- Iâm not trying to ignore the guidelines ;I fully understand the concerns about reliable sources, tone, and avoiding original research. My plan is to re-add the structure, then incorporate your feedback by replacing weak sources, improving the language, and ensuring everything matches Wikipedia standards.
- Is it alright if I restore the edits and then continue improving them step by step? I want to make sure I follow policy while also being able to build on the work Iâve already done. Salinafiaz (talk) 18:05, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Salinafiaz: Sure, you can if you want, but I would highly recommend starting over from scratch, making sure to find scholarly sources as I told you as well as making sure you don't engage in original research. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to directly work on your edits, so this may be the best way to proceed. Children Will Listen (đ talk, đ« contribs) 18:09, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
- This is not acceptable. It doesnât even look like an article for starters. Anyone, even a reader who has never edited in their life, can see that. Articles have lead sections at the very top without headings, not âintroductionâ sections beneath the table of contents. And thatâs just scratching the surface of what I imagine are many severe issues in your version of the article. You canât just rewrite an entire article from scratch unless itâs absolutely abysmal (which this isnât) and you certainly canât replace an entire article with what is basically your student essay on the subject. Any further changes you want to make should be confined to userspace and proposed for inclusion in the articleâs talk page. Dronebogus (talk) 21:57, 26 November 2025 (UTC)
