Duplicate template argument

[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm Zackmann08. Thank you for your recent contributions to Template:Transgender topics. When you were adding content to the page, you added duplicate arguments to a template which can cause issues with how the template is rendered. In the future, please use the preview button before you save your edit; this helps you find these errors as they will display in yellow at the top of the page. Thanks. Ah interesting, apologies that I missed that, I didn't realize we had the body class already there when I copied over the other style from {{LGBTQ}}.
Btw with regards to the warning on using the preview - it is rather lost in between the other 4 warnings (particularly since it's inside the same box as ""This is only a preview").

When making major changes to this template please be sure to update its documentation.
Content that violates any copyrights will be deleted. Encyclopedic content must be verifiable through citations to reliable sources.

Warning: Template:Transgender topics (edit) is calling Template:Navbox with more than one value for the "bodyclass" parameter. Only the last value provided will be used. (Help)

Might need to be marked with a separate RED warning box as it's a typical case of Banner blindness from a usability perspective. Raladic (talk) 07:14, 14 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Zackmann08 - created a talk at Duplicate parameters help talk page to see if we can improve the warning being a bit more prominent. :) Raladic (talk) 07:23, 14 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the ping! I commented on your talk page post. For the record, missing a duplicate param is NOT that huge of a deal. I use WP:TW to just make sure people are aware that it is a thing. I’ve been known to throw pages in that category myself from time to time so no worries but thanks for introducing me to the term banner blindness! Had never heard of that one before. — Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 07:27, 14 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Right, I didn't see any rendering issues in this case in the preview, so I just missed the warning, but now I know and will be on the lookout in the future.
As for the term banner blindness - yup, it's a fairly software UX term, but I guess in the case of Wikipedia, the lines get blurry, especially since templates are a bit on the scripty side.
There are two common things at play with banner blindness,
  • one is that users of computers, smartphones... have been conditioned to just hit next-next in dialogs and ignore what's in them because it's overwhelming, South Park did an episode on it 15 years ago on terms and conditions dialogs.
  • the second is that a large volume of warnings bunched together, while well intended, overwhelm users, so it increases the motivation to not read every single one in great detail and go past them if the overall appearance looks familiar (it's also why unfortunately a lot of the big bold warning boxes on article talk pages get skipped by users who just hit the "Add Topic" button, even though there might be a bold FAQ box up there that explains what their question (which might be the x-th iteration of the same one).
So, it's just something to be mindful of in UX and Wikipedia is at the end of the day also software, and indeed, fairly prone to the issue :) Raladic (talk) 07:51, 14 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
