Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Durban Point (House of Assembly of South Africa constituency), you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages United Party and New Republic Party. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, --DPL bot (talk) 05:55, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Parlementêre verkiesings in Suid-Afrika, 1910-1976

[edit]

Do you have access to the book "Parlementêre verkiesings in Suid-Afrika, 1910-1976"? You seem to cite it repeatedly for several election results in South African constituencies within the book's timespan, particularly in the Cape Province but there seem to be some discrepancies with some of the preserved gazettes in gazettes.africa, and in case you have access to the book I'd encourage you to double check before making any further changes. As I don't have access to the Parlementêre verkiesings, and primary sources maybe aren't all that adequate, I have refrained myself from making any changes in this sense, but in case you'd be willing to share some excerpts over some other medium I'd be more than willing to cooperate in trying to complete the information about those elections. Senyor Duna (talk) 15:42, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! The answer is a bit complicated - I don't have access to the book itself, but a couple of friends and I had a project going to compile South African election results a couple of years ago, and as part of that, one of them got the book and copied over all the GE results prior to 1933 into a spreadsheet. It's quite possible that some information got lost in the game of telephone that resulted, and so if you have better sources, by all means make the edits. Max96 (talk) 12:17, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately I am in a similar situation, I only have fragmentary access to the results from studies citing the Parlementêre verkiesings and the gazettes, but outside of South Africa the book is incredibly rare to come by. There's also no way to access it digitally because it has never been scanned or preserved in any way, but it seems to be the best source available for compiling South African elections prior and during to the Apartheid period. I wanted to access this book for a similar goal to the one you and your friends had and if this projects is still up I'd be more than willing to cooperate creating pages, cleaning them up and translating them. Cheers. Senyor Duna (talk) 17:48, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Max96,
I have been following the progress on pre-1994 South African constituency and elections articles with great interest. Fortunately, I do have access to the content of "Parlementêre Verkiesings in Suid-Afrika 1910-1976" (excluding the editorial content by Mr. Schoeman and the results of the 1960 republican referendum) - I had a copy of the book shipped to me from Switzerland just last year. I also have access to an alphabetical list of all Members of the House of Assembly, 1910 to ca. 1972, from Eric Rosenthal's Standard Encyclopedia of Southern Africa, including the respective terms of office and constituencies. As I have only little experience in editing Wikipedia I would suggest that I mail you the raw data I have, provided that this lies within the terms of use of Wikipedia and general Copyright law. How can we get in touch?
