Getting Help: How and Where to Ask a Question?
On a final note, you may want to try the new (beta) VisualEditor, check out our monthly newspaper, the Wikipedia Signpost, and join a WikiProject of interest to you. WikiProjects gather editors interested in certain topic areas, providing them with information, tools and a place to discuss the topic in question. . For a list of all WikiProjects, see here. Joining a WikiProject makes the Wikipedia experience much richer! Chris Troutman (talk) 10:49, 1 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I am absolutely certain that this is an automated message, but thank you anyway! HKLionel (talk) 13:22, 1 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No, the message is semi-automated boilerplate. Actual human volunteers post to talk pages, whether done by their hand or fired-off by a bot they run. Chris Troutman (talk) 14:39, 1 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, sorry! Thank you for your effort! I just made a page and I would like to know when the "under construction" template is usually removed. I cannot finish it right now but I will tomorrow, so I am worried if there is an automated process or something like that if I take too long. Thanks! HKLionel (talk) 14:56, 1 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
{{Under construction/doc}} says specifically that "this template should not be used for new articles with little or no content" so I've moved what you created to Draft:Albania in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2012 so you can develop it without worrying about immediate deletion. All articles need to be supported by reliable sources and an event will have to demonstrate general notability. I caution new editors against creating new articles because it won't help you develop as a constructive editor. Chris Troutman (talk) 15:25, 1 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, forgot that draft pages exist. Sorry and thank you! Since I have seen other articles that are of the same topic, for example "Belarus in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2012", I thought that this would be a topic of general notability. Thanks! HKLionel (talk) 01:14, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The original page was a redirect and now there is no redirect and the article is also admin-only, can you re-add the redirect to the page? I prob will take a while to finish the draft, thx HKLionel (talk) 07:08, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There's no need for a redirect although per WP:REDDEAL you might remove any remaining red links to it; I've removed the red link from a couple navigation templates. You can focus on improving the draft. Chris Troutman (talk) 13:40, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Pending changes reviewer granted

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "pending changes reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on pages protected by pending changes. The list of articles awaiting review is located at Special:PendingChanges, while the list of articles that have pending changes protection turned on is located at Special:StablePages.

Being granted reviewer rights neither grants you status nor changes how you can edit articles. If you do not want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time.

Relisting

[edit]

Please do not relist discussions when there is clear consensus, e.g. Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2025_March_1#Category:People_from_Fort_Liberty,_North_Carolina and Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2025_March_1#Category:Former_Stardust_Promotion_artists. Either close the discussion or leave it alone so that someone else can close it. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:05, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

For the former, LaundryPizza03 proposed merging, which is different from the nom's proposal of renaming. For the latter, I concur as both the nom and the vote agreed on merging; my mistake. Should I close it? Cheers, it's lio! | talk | work 07:12, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Marcocapelle: ping just in case. it's lio! | talk | work 11:26, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
With respect to the former, that is just an unfortunate misunderstanding. The target is a redirect so merge and rename are the same in this particular case. I think it is too confusing to close now after you already relisted it. Marcocapelle (talk) 11:36, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh dear, my sincere apologies. When relisting I don't analyze the discussion as thoroughly. Will note that in the future. Have a good day, it's lio! | talk | work 11:42, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks -- I've just completed moving the category entries over and finalizing the rename. SWATJester Shoot Blues, Tell VileRat! 22:56, 9 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks for getting involved with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2025_February_20#Category:Law_of_Middle_East_and_North_Africa. It's helpful to know that AnonymousPurpose is using AI--explains a lot.

I haven't been involved in a consultation like this before. As I understand it, it's decided by content of arguments, rather than mere votes. I've tried to respond substantively to questions and arguments, but have received almost no replies. I find it hard to accept that this would be settled on the basis of vote counting. Will Hanley (talk) 15:30, 3 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Will Hanley: No, I'm not vote counting, I just wanted to summarize the proposed solutions and the stances of everyone involved in it, especially as the latter tended to change along with the discussion, both for my own clarity (if I do eventually make a close) and for everyone else's. You provide very strong arguments and have remained civil in the discussion. Have a good day, it's lio! | talk | work 15:35, 3 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

My revert

[edit]

I reverted your accepted edit out of an abundance of caution as, despite the edit summary of the edit in question, the image has not been removed from the article in the last 100 revisions per WikiBlame. I thus suspect nefarious intentions, especially given the subject matter, and am investigating further. Iseult Δx talk to me 03:07, 6 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, HKLionel,

Please review, carefully, Wikipedia:Non-admin closure. Non-admins should not close deletion discussions that require deletion or any close calls where participant opinion is divided. If you want to help closing deletion discussions, please follow these guidelines to a "T" or your closures could be challenged, only close obvious discussions that have "Keep" closes. If you have questions, please bring them to the Teahouse or speak to one of the admins who frequents CFD discussions. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 23:39, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Liz Hi, please read WP:NACD more carefully - non-admin are allowed to close CfD discussions as delete as we may log the requests at WT:CFD/W. Please familiarize yourself with the relevant policies before posting such messages in the future. Have a great day, it's lio! | talk | work 23:44, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

User: Kysnowxoxo

[edit]

You may find the "Kentucky snow" explanation implausible but when I did a Google search, that came up as a possibility. Also, the xoxo characters are associated with affection and friendship. In general, administrators are reluctant to block usernames unless they are unambiguouly violent, profane or threatening without any doubt whatsoever. Disruptive edits remove any doubt in borderline cases, and a majority of newly registered usernames never make an edit, and are therefore not worth paying attention to. Please take these factors into consideration when filing reports at WP:UAA. Thanks. Cullen328 (talk) 17:41, 25 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The 2025 Core Contest Winners!

[edit]

The winners of the 2025 Core Contest are announced 🎉. An great turnout with a impressive variety of articles and laudable improvements. The judges (Aza24, Femke and Casliber) would like to thank everybody who joined and congratulate the winners.

  • First place (and a prize of £120) goes to Phlsph7 (talk · contribs) for his systemic overhaul of the Political Philosophy article. What was once an unwieldy entry—dominated by a sprawling history section of nearly three dozen subsections!—is now an accessible and well-structured survey of a complex and often polarizing subject. We particularly commend Phlsph7’s global, inclusive, and comprehensive approach. He has once again demonstrated exceptional skill in handling core topics with clarity and balance.
  • Second place (and a prize of £100) goes to Dracophyllum (talk · contribs) for their outstanding work on both Trunk and Flower. The former was reimagined from a ~200 word stub into a richly detailed and impeccably sourced overview—an effort truly worthy of its dedicatee, the late and much-missed Vami IV. Meanwhile, their improvements to the Flower article transformed an already strong entry into an exceptional one, now well on its way to passing FAC.
  • Third place (and a prize of £80) goes to Vigilantcosmicpenguin (talk · contribs) for his major development of the Niamey article. The entry now proudly stands among the finest city articles on Wikipedia—from thirty scattered references to nearly 400 high-quality academic sources. We particularly commend his inclusion of numerous French-language sources and thoughtfully comprehensive approach to the topic.

Counter-Vandalism Unit Academy request for training

[edit]

Hi,

I would like to try to complete the counter-vandalism unit academy with you as my mentor. The front page of the academy makes the whole thing seem scary but I'm up to try it. I have a bit of counter vandalism experience already but I don't think I'm very good, so I think this academy would be a good way for me to learn how to do it properly.

Thanks, Coulomb1 (talk) 06:38, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Coulomb1 Yep, I'm sorry, I'm not as I am currently participating in an intensive academic program abroad, so there's not much free time on hand at the moment. Rest assured that I'll get things ready as soon as possible. Thanks, it's lio! | talk | work 01:31, 16 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@HKLionel Hi, checking in again. I'm in no rush so if you still have more important things to do don't let me distract you. Coulomb1 (talk) 17:57, 5 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Coulomb1 thanks for your patience...work is piling up but it's on my immediate to-do list. In the meantime though, you can actually sift through your previous anti-vandalism work and pick out contributions that demonstrate your knowledge in different areas — CVUA will be quicker to go through if I have evidence that you already know stuff. Perhaps also dabble a bit in previously unexplored areas and venues and try out different anti-vandalism tools. Cheers and happy editing, it's lio! | talk | work 18:03, 5 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

CVUA

[edit]

Hi there,

I wanted to reach out and ask about potentially completing the CVUA. Does this entail a lot of work on my end? I'm keen to do it but am also quite time-poor at the moment. What specifically does it involve? Thanks! SnowyRiver 05:38, 13 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! No worries, I'm also very busy.
I've been using RedWarn for my RC Patrolling.
Here's my RedWarn-tagged contribs.
I think I have a solid handle on the basics of patrolling, but I have a few questions and things I keep coming across:
  1. Are we required to warn every user? I've noticed a lot of IP accounts will make one edit and then leave, so do we still need to add a warning template to their talk page? For example an IP made this edit, and I warned them here, but it kinda seems like a waste of time if they're never going to edit again. Is warning after every single revert a strict requirement?
  2. What should I do with edits that are good-faith and constructive, but have issues such as poor phrasing, spelling, formatting etc.? It feels like a waste of constructive user contributions if they get reverted, but at the same time it seems very tedious manually editing each page and correcting mistakes. Is this what is expected?
Thanks! SnowyRiver28 (talk) 06:42, 16 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding my second question, here is an example of what I mean. See how it's a good, constructive edit, but poorly placed and phrased? SnowyRiver28 (talk) 06:46, 16 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, so if fixing these issues is within your ability, it'd be great if you could just spend a few seconds on doing so. If they're not, you can always resort to WP:TAGGING. it's lio! | talk | work 11:30, 16 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Great to hear!
1. Well, you never know when they might come back, do you? Of course there isn't a "requirement" - it's not like there'd be any way to enforce it - but in my opinion it's best practice to do so. Plus, the IP you warned did in fact keep on editing, so case in point.
2. The best case scenario is that you or someone else can fix these issues to not let good faith contributions go to waste. I get your point that it can be tedious, especially when involving subject matter you are unfamiliar with, so feel free to revert if the edits have caused major disruption, but remember to discuss on the talk page or check page history and seek out any recently active editors on the article and ask them for help with rectifying any possible issues. it's lio! | talk | work 11:27, 16 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hey there, sorry it's been a while since I last messaged.
I've been doing some more patrolling recently and I wanted to get your thoughts on how I handled a user's edits on Dunlop Tyres with User talk:62.165.254.251. We went backward and forwards undoing each other's edits until the IP stopped editing. I was about to report them to WP:AIV before they stopped.
Is AIV the correct avenue here? Technically it's not vandalism, but I couldn't think of a page where things like edit wars are reported.
I find it tricky with instances such as this where editors are trying to make good faith, genuine edits, but they're not implementing them correctly according to various Wikipedia policies and formats. I ended up leaving a custom talk page message, but is there an easier and better way to handle this?
Thanks! SnowyRiver28 (talk) 09:31, 1 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
After the edit warring reports, we did end up getting a somewhat productive conversation on Dunlop Tyres § Japanese ownership. Managed to guide the user towards sourcing their edit properly, and then went and fixed their wikitext syntax and some other references, but the user got a 72h block in the end. Gurkubondinn (talk) 14:42, 1 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@SnowyRiver28: well, if you're able to determine that the IP isn't an outright vandal, you can refer to the guideline on disruptive editing, which has multiple ways to deal with disruptive editors apart from AIV. Just remember that there's no perfect response to every situation, so sometimes you do have to rely on your experience and commonsense judgment. it's lio! | talk | work 06:30, 6 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2025 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:56, 18 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Short descriptions about symbols

[edit]

wp:Think of the reader. A short description about a symbol is entirely useless and a waste of space if it fails to include that symbol. In an wp:annotated link, let alone a search, how is the reader to be given any clue which of the many typographic, mathematical, scientific or linguistic symbols it is? As I see it, symbol characters are a form of WP:SDJARGON that require readers to have pre-existing knowledge of the subject to understand and therefore differentiate. They are also a pictorial element. Contextual descriptions can provide more information and help the reader understand the symbol's application, benefitting them more. However, I don't care about the specific articles, so do as you wish. Cheers, it's lio! | talk | work 16:03, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding your reverts, I will say that I derived all information from the lede, so if you have a problem with the content, change it in the article, especially as the lede is also the most visible part of an article. it's lio! | talk | work 16:07, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have stumbled upon and read your discussion at WT:SHORTDESC, and you make good points. I'll just avoid making edits related to symbols. Thanks for your effort and contributions. Have a great day, it's lio! | talk | work 16:19, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. And yes, I do see your point about pre-existing knowledge and I do recognise your good faith – if someone enters ® into a search box, they just want registered trade mark and don't need to see the symbol again. But if they just search for "trade mark symbol", they need a hint – is it ®? or is it or even , and what's the difference? And in a See Also list, they might even be educated to see that Francophone Canada has another symbol.
The top-down perspective says it is redundant, the bottom-up perspective says it is essential. 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 16:55, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
