- I believe I have been blocked as I study and work in a university and I think I was editing a page that my predecessor in my role was also editing, leading to this looking like a sockpuppet account. I'm happy to provide more details if this will help. EBedrock (talk) 13:29, 13 March 2025 (UTC)

Decline reason:
Well, this is quite disturbing. It indicates you've been editing as part of your role. I can't see where you disclosed this, as required by WP:PAID and WP:COI. You also describe a condition we refer to as meatpuppetry. See WP:MEAT. Yamla (talk) 16:21, 18 March 2025 (UTC)
If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

I understand that my editing activity was interpreted as a violation of Wikipedia's sockpuppetry or meatpuppetry policy. I would like to clarify the context.
I work in a communications role at the University of Oxford. Last year, while working in a different department, I made some edits to Wikipedia pages related to that department and individuals associated with it. These were based on my domain knowledge, and I was not asked or paid to make them. I now understand that, because I was editing from a shared IP and on related topics, this may have raised concerns. I can also see that I should have declared a conflict of interest and avoided making direct edits.
My account dates back to 2016 and has only ever been used sporadically and in good faith. I have never engaged in deceptive behaviour and have never used another account or asked anyone else to edit on my behalf. I misunderstood the COI guidelines but now appreciate the importance of transparency.
If unblocked, I will add a COI declaration to my User page, and I will not make direct edits to any article where I have a conflict of interest. I will use Talk pages or edit request templates to suggest changes in line with Wikipedia policy.
Thank you for considering this request.
Decline reason:
You are indisputably, 100% a paid editor. It doesn't require being specifically paid or asked to edit(as then every paid editor would deny being specifically paid to edit, rendering the policy meaningless). You said that you work in communications and edited related to your department; clearly editing falls within your job duties even if you weren't specifically instructed to be here. You possibly have satisfactorily addressed the sockpuppetry, but raised new issues here. 331dot (talk) 08:57, 26 March 2025 (UTC)

- I think you need to have another look at WP:PAID. Your work means you count as a paid person, and so have to make a disclosure if you are making edits related to your work. PhilKnight (talk) 20:00, 25 March 2025 (UTC)

Thank you for the clarification.
I now understand that under Wikipedia’s definition, I am considered a paid editor because the edits I made were related to my role in university communications, even though I was not specifically instructed or paid to make those edits. I accept this interpretation and appreciate that the purpose of WP:PAID is to ensure transparency, regardless of intent.
I genuinely made those edits in good faith and based on subject knowledge, not with promotional intent. I now see that a disclosure was required.
If unblocked, I will: - Add a clear COI and paid editing disclosure to my user page; - Not make direct edits to pages related to my employer; - Use Talk pages or edit request templates to suggest changes where appropriate;
Thank you for your time and consideration.
