Covid-19 economic recovery
[edit]Kia ora Andy! I'm hoping you might be able to help with a Covid-related question on an article I've come across. I'm doing some work on the cleanup backlog for WPNZ and came across the articles for Claudelands and Claudelands railway station, which reference work on the station being proposed as an initiative as part of the economic recovery from the pandemic. Both articles link to a section on the page COVID-19 pandemic in New Zealand which no longer exists, but I can't seem to find an equivalent on the economic article or elsewhere. Do you know where the best place that these links could point to would be? Ngā mihi, Turnagra (talk) 08:04, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Turnagra:, thanks for spotting that issue. That redirect to COVID-19 pandemic in New Zealand#Infrastructure Industry Reference Group economic recovery projects doesn't appear to have been covered in any of the New Zealand COVID-19 pandemic articles or even the Sixth Labour Government of New Zealand. It could warrant its own article but will need a lot of research. I have move on from COVID-19 related topics. Cheers. Andykatib (talk) 09:05, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- All good, appreciate you taking the time to have a look! I thought that was the case but figured I should come to the expert just in case - thanks for all the work you've done in this space over the past five years! Turnagra (talk) 18:20, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

[edit]Hi nice work on the school meals stuff. I just want to let you know that I've moved some content from School meal to School lunches in New Zealand. Bye. ―Panamitsu (talk) 03:40, 14 March 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Panamitsu:, thanks so much. That section was getting lengthy so it is good that you took the initiative. Given the rolling media coverage on the National-led government's revamped school lunch programme, it is good Wikipedia is covering it. Will look at it. Andykatib (talk) 03:50, 14 March 2025 (UTC)
- Hi you might not be interested in this but thought that you might want to know considering that it's the subject of the news a lot. In 2023 I started writing the article Supermarkets in New Zealand which has been in draftspace and inactive since then because I got bored of it. Today I published it to mainspace (the article is very incomplete) so if you're interested in the duopoly stuff that's in the news a lot then you may be interested in adding stuff there. Sorry if you aren't interested in this. ―Panamitsu (talk) 02:03, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Panamitsu:, thanks for starting the Supermarkets in New Zealand article. The media started covering it back in 2022 so it is good that someone on Wikipedia has started an article on it. It will be useful given the media coverage and government attention to the topic. I wish I could help but right now I am busy and I'm not in a good space mentally and emotionally. Usually, I would be really eager to edit but I can't seem to find the will power to edit. I see a lot of potential in both the supermarkets and School lunches in New Zealand articles but I am not in the right space to edit. It's really sad how David Seymour has mucked up the school programme. Radio New Zealand has been covering it but the rolling coverage has made me anxious and depressed. I hope to be able to help when I'm in the right space mentally. But thanks for taking the initiative and keep up the good work. Godspeed. Andykatib (talk) 03:56, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
- That's ok, I just wanted to let you know that the article exists, no need to work on it if you don't want to. Take all the time you need to get through this tough time and I hope you get well soon.
- Here are some cute animals to hopefully make you feel better. I don't know what animals you like (if any) so I've given you a selection of different ones:

Excessive detail
[edit]While your energy is admirable, the level of detail you've inserted into Leongatha mushroom murders and Loafers Lodge fire (and possibly other article -- I haven't really looked) is, to be blunt, grotesquely excessive. We offer our readers a summary of the important or unusual points of a subject, not every twist and turn of even the most trivial development. A jury needs to hear experts testify that a certain kind of mushroom killed the victims, but unless that was a point of dispute at trial, our readers -- having been told by the article, as a point of fact, how the victims died -- don't need the details of that testimony, or even anything at all about it, since they will surmise without being told that someone in a position to do so made that determination. The mushroom murder article is absolutely packed with stuff like that, making it completely unreadable.
Similarly, the Loafers fire article is full of stuff like this:
On 26 August, other firefighters including Brady Cutting, Joshua Leceve, Martin Wilby and Mark Powell testified about their experiences on the night. Crown prosecutor Grant Burston also read testimony from Loafers lodge survivor Timothy Nevin. On 27 August, the court heard testimony about the night of the fire from several Loafers Lodge survivors including Faamatala Sili, Glenn Cross, firefighters Brendon Wood and Justine Churchman.
So what??? You don't even tell us what they said! What is the reader supposed to do with this information? Elsewhere we have:
On 8 September, the court was shown photos and drone footage taken in the days after the fire on 16 May 2023, which showed that parts of the mezzanine floor had collapsed onto the third floor below, debris and charred structural beams. Detective Sergeant Hayley Adams, the officer who had taken charge of the crime scene, told the court that first responders had found the kitchen and dining areas of Loafers Lodge completely consumed by flames.
So what???' We know that place was destroyed by fire. What does it matter who arrived when to find the fire at what stage? What does it matter that this floor collapsed on that floor?
Let me suggest that you wait until the fire trial is over, and then summarize its outcome and any unusual points of dispute. The pedestrian and obvious don't serve the readers' understanding of the subject, but rather leave them wondering what they are reading all this miscellany for. EEng 19:52, 21 September 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @EEng:, thanks for your feedback. I admit that I do get too carried away with details when writing about things. I tend to take an interest in cases with extensive media coverage and public interest. I sometimes feel the need to explain how the jury reached their decision but forget that WP:Wikipedia is not a newspaper. Are there good articles involving court cases or trials that I could follow as examples? I agree that it would be best to wait until trials are over and then summarise the outcome. I have worked on a number of court cases including that could probably be trimmed back with a machete. Happy to work with you to cut them back. Andykatib (talk) 22:46, 21 September 2025 (UTC)
- One thing you could consider is rewriting and condensing the section of the Loafer's Lodge article once the trial is over. It may be more clear then which pieces of evidence were important. I greatly value your work on adding current events, but EEng does have a point.-Gadfium (talk) 23:08, 21 September 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks @Gadfium:, will work on condensing and rewriting the Loafers' Lodge article once the trial is over. I tend to start big before cutting down. Something that I learned when writing my MA and PhD theses; in both cases keeping to the word limit was a challenge. I will also have to look at other last trial articles I have worked on including the Murders of the Dickason children, Death of Pauline Hanna, Killing of Enere McLaren-Taana and Deaths of Yuna and Minu Jo. Feel free to have a look at them and let me know what you and @EEng: think. Andykatib (talk) 01:11, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
- I'm afraid all the articles you list suffer the same problem: incomprehensible overdetail. The original sin in all of them is the reporting of the trial week by week -- this fundamentally implies an inappropriate level of detail. What to do? In the case of the mushroom article, I suspect that the entire trial section can be replaced by a very short summary of the prosecution case and the defense's claims -- essentially very, very stripped-down versions of the opening submissions and closing arguments -- because these are summaries (which is what our readers need) -- plus maybe bits from Patterson's own testimony. Little if anything from the "Crown's case" section is needed at all, I suspect. EEng 01:37, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for your feedback, @EEng:. Will try condensing the Leongatha trial sections to just the prosecution and defence opening submissions and closing arguments. Could incorporate elements of Patterson's own testimony since she is central to the case. Will have a go at it this week and see if I can apply the model to the other articles I have worked on. Cheers. Andykatib (talk) 03:43, 22 September 2025 (UTC)

- I agree with Gadfium. Your work is much appreciated, but you do get carried away with it. As to good examples, look through the category tree for FAs in the topic area that you are interested in. You won't necessarily find FAs in NZ or AU; just go beyond that and look for other countries. Given that Featured Articles go through a rigorous review process, they are your best chance of finding very good templates regarding structure and detail. Schwede66 06:20, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
