"New" parameter

Does anyone know what the purpose is/was of the below field? Does it actually do anything?

I see it a lot in infoboxes on older articles in particular e.g. Sean O'Loughlin. I assume it's no longer used? J Mo 101 (talk) 23:17, 23 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The short answer is it is a leftover parameter from when they created a new version of the infobox and needed to distinguish which pages were using which version. A longer discussion is at this archive page. It is definitely not needed any more, and I believe the only reason it is still listed in the unknown parameters check is that it would flood the category with thousands of pages were it to be removed, and it's so obscure that mass removal is somewhat unnecessary.
