Venereal disease

I would like the old term VD - Venereal Disease to be preserved, a country which protects its "reputation" in an unsavoury fashion from its own citizens´legal international recourse is notable for promoting the spread of VD - Venereal Disease via encouraging its acceptance as a natural disease, when practice has proven it is not but is the direct result of prostitution, and secondarily of intercourse with grossly promiscuous individuals who may have had physical relation with an infected individual who has had intercourse with another infected individual so that the chain of individuals can lead on to prostitution. Moreover today the WHO and the police worldwide in effect promote the spread of VD through never sufficiently isolated and protected full physical examinations and body searches, which also applies to prisons. 77.54.42.69 (talk) 19:00, 12 February 2013‎ (UTC)[reply]

Definition

User:TylerDurden8823 To be defined as an STI requires that the disease be "commonly spread by sexual activity". With respect to adding:

• Neisseria meningitidis
• Shigella
• Zika virus (semen)

For N. meningitis we have a few cases[1]. For Shigella this is not a common route. For Zika maybe. Will look for a source.

We have the CDC here https://www.cdc.gov/zika/hc-providers/clinical-guidance/sexualtransmission.html still not sure if I would classify it as an STI though.

We do have this section Sexually_transmitted_infection#Viruses_in_semen were we state that these infections can be spread but are not STIs per say. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 09:22, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Some literature and sources are starting to suggest Shigella as an emerging STI on closer look. It may be slightly too soon for N. meningitidis though there was a cluster of ~300 cases (so not exactly what I would call super rare or "a few" necessarily), but as you say, I see the definition on our page emphasizes it being common. Although Zika is known to be spread through sexual contact, it's possible that it's not "officially" listed as one just yet. TylerDurden8823 (talk) 17:26, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

STI vs STD

Autisticeditor 20 has been on what I can only describe as a crusade against all mentions of the phrase "sexually transmitted disease", in favor of "sexually transmitted infection". I'm interested in seeing if such moves are necessary; I would think that both are essentially synonyms and it does not matter as long as there is consistency within each article. Change some of the text fields on the Risks section such that "woman" and "man" are replaced with "vaginal" and "penile" or something similar such that those who have genitals that do not align with their gender or have ambiguous genitals can understand the risks better. I would be okay with using the terms "female" and "male" to specify that the context is biological sex (and yes I know genitalia doesn't always match with biological sex) and not gender but penile and vaginal may need quite a bit of reowrding to work in.
